A Model to Compare Practice Patterns of DO and MD Surgical Subspecialists
In the third episode of the JAOA's new podcast series, Behind the Research, Melissa Schmidt (JAOA Director) interviews Harris Ahmed, DO, author of a recent article in which he and his 4 co-authors analyzed the practice locations of 643 ophthalmologists in Michigan, traditionally a hub of osteopathic education and practice, and found a higher proportions DOs practicing in rural communities, suggesting a familiar trend toward osteopathic involvement in underserved areas. Dr. Ahmed discusses these findings in Michigan as a "case study" for how traditional differences in practice patterns for DOs and MDs in primary care are also borne out in surgical subspecialties. He also discusses how expansion of graduate medical education (GME) could help strategically redistribute specialists of all medical education backgrounds into underserved areas.
The article is available at www.jaoa.org.

I've always been fascinated by the innate human ability to hold firm beliefs which contradict their observations. It's wild how otherwise intelligent people are able to be confronted with things which challenge their beliefs in a very clear way yet still defy reason. An audience of over 100K sitting here watching this video of a skull which clearly is subdivided into parts, and getting instructions about how moving the parts of the skull should have health benefits, all the while we all know a real adult skull isn't subdivided into such parts and they simply can't move in that way. It's not unlike when a child talks about a big round santa coming down a 5 inch chimney without calling it into question.

There is not a shred of evidence to support the use of this "treatment". All content regarding cranial osteopathy should be tossed from the NBOME exams and osteopathic school curriculums.

clear, verbose but still better than 90% of the OMT techniques demonstrated. One suggestion, treating from the same side is better for the small therapist. I am 6,4 and can accomplish most techniques, but in my classes the various techniques are demonstrated by big guys on small women making them look east to accomplish. I adopt the techniques for smaller therapists.
