Great job and great color!
I'm the best*
merry christmas and happy new year to all!
Pleasing shapes,, nice polish job aswell Nice mate Happy Christmas to you
Overall satisfied and it allowed me a slower week 😅
MY help?!?!? I suggest you just send it to me ;D I think you should remove more and keep as a full-on crystal
Let's make a deal, you send me $50 and I finish it + send it to you.
@@polishedopals8667 $50..... would I get more than one? Or just this stone? :p
I can probably find another cheap one I can send along with this
Clean up the opal on top to make the best clean stone you can. That will let you know how much of the back to take off, but potch on the back should be left on if you can . The crack on the side might come off in the process. I enjoy your channel, keep them coming!
Crack's gone, the inclusions I still have in the face are both very light, rather discreet, and deep, so they are unfortunately not really ever cleaning up.
Nice blues, personally I'd leave the potch on the back, helps it pop a bit more, and as Don commented, it'll give you a bigger dome, Good luck with it And have a good Christmas and new year
Yeah, I'm always scared with crystals that they will just look like a piece of clear glass, unlike they have both great distributiom, fantastic facing and better brightness...
It is always good to have pride in your work. Though I prefer crystal it may be best just to dome it as is to keep the opal from being too thin? Good luck!
The opal would not be TOON thin, but I think it would be borderline at roughly 2.2mm (guestimate).
Nice bit of colour 👍
Yep, love the color, but unfortunately it's in a bad position. Can't be helped.
Doublet time?
@@ThatOpalGuy There's still the issue of the colorless potch in the middle, and it's not my style anyway, but one could do that yes.
Great job, love the shape you created. You have gotten better at showing off the colors in videos
If I hadn't nobody would see the color on this one
I like the results of this stone. The brightness is something we cannot control, sadly.
Yeah, overall I'm happy with *my work* but the stone giveth and the stone taketh, if it's at least at the break even point (in theory) then I'm not too mad.
@@polishedopals8667this is the best attitude to have, especially if it’s the first time getting material from a particular miner. Good job 👍
To be fair, not the miner's fault, either. I'm still gonna buy from him.
would make a good, long drop.
Yep, that's the plan, unless somehow there's more hiding under the skin.
Love the colors and shape. Great job on forming that
It's not shaped yet, c'mon, you should know that by now 🙄
@@polishedopals8667 not shaped COMPLETELY :P
Looking good,,
@@scottpeters5624 I was hoping for brighter, but still, can't complain.
You could give it away to a beginning cutter to practice shaping.
That's kind of what I suggested (I mean, fine, I said symbolic fee) but I don't want to pay for shipping, you know 😅
These thin bars are a pain, but you do learn so much chasing them. as for being weak when faced, yes I do find that annoying. Such is opal.
The different colors of the stones is amazing. Great work bringing them out
But they are soooo weak
I do like the color on it Good luck with the final piece
Unfortunately, the color overall wasn't the issue 😅
Love the color you were able to get out of it
It ain't that strong, honestly. Needed a lot of light and even then it was basically a weak boulder.
Update: I noticed that the first part of the video got deleted, where we have the real rough. I blame my editor.
Damn editor! He should be fired :P
good luck!
Alas.
It's amazing how you can find the colors. Everytime you show it I see more color. I know you are enjoying the process
Sometimes I do, sometimes, it gets really frustrating
Hard to say. It has potential, still.
@@ThatOpalGuy But it would be so so small... My poor fingers 😖
YOU SHOULD FINISH IT Great video explaining the thin rock! You can always send me "trash" rocks :p
Thank you for being you
I understand you must do what you think is the right thing. I believe sometimes we get carried away because we're so mesmerized by the Opals and it's so easy telling someone else what to do, or shouldn't do. I've just recovered opal, it's all new to me. Thank you so much for sharing
Potch seem opal from Cooper Pedy. The color runs diagonally through the seem. This rough is often already discarded for specimens. Not really good for cutting. The price outweighs the gains. Color is minimal. I have fought pieces of this material for years my friend.
I can guarantee you it's from Grawin. But it could be from Turkmenistan for all it matters, it's a dud either way.
I'm still amazing at the rough Opals... I've never seen one so light blue with color. It hurts to be called "nothing" ... I would love to have something like that... Enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing
I mean, sure, there's color, but the market for a cracked half stone is... nonexistent
It is quite exciting working on a new opal. But it is damn frustrating when they dont cooperate!
Depends on the stone, honestly, some isn't exactly exciting because I can already tell there's nothing 😅 I thought this one had a chance, though.
When you machine polish most Sio2 rocks, opal included, there is minute melting of the surface area that flows and fills in small cracks or holes. Hand polishing doesn't achieve this hence the ripples in the surface of some polished rocks.
Is white Australian fire opal have fire one sided??
If the seam where the opal was formed is thin then the colour is cut into from one side only, with thicker pieces you can cut from both sides. I generally cut thinner opal from one side and try to leave as little sand on the back as possible, keeping the sand on the back increases the opals final weight but detracts from the value of the opal.
As Allan says, it's feasible, but it's not the case for this one, unfortunately. It's mostly potch, but the bar is not thick enough to double side.
Sweet,, you gotta be pleased with that gem,, Good work mate
I'm pleased with both 😂
A WEEK?!?! Did you even eat?? Great work ;)
Eh, about 8 hours of work over 7 days, just have to find the time.
great color and pattern!
Pretty happy yeah, good investment in theory
Quite nice color, indeed. It's beautiful.. It seems like I could see the pores on the top of the second one, like skin pores... It's gorgeous... "Polished by hand" wow, excellent stuff... I'm completely taken by Opal. I don't believe there's an opal I don't like. Thank you so much for sharing these... Eye candy's 😍😂
I was trying to get ride of those "pores" but yeah, after 9-10 hours, I gave up - for now.
@@polishedopals8667 I'm shocked I saw those... it's really nice, looking like actual pores on skin.... I don't believe a skilled opal cutter like yourself would ever consider one to be perfect, even if others can't see it. I've noticed I point out faults in my gems (not opal) that others don't see... I can't wait to get some good opal, I believe I would just hold it for a while before I had the courage to hurt it 😂
Great job!! Great cut!
Pretty happy with it, no doubt about it.
Looks nice. Should polish up a treat 🙂
It should but it's really resisting it as much as possible... Hopefully by next week 😅
@@polishedopals8667 yes I find that happens a bit. It just looks a little hazey, you take a bit more and then some colours or patterns disappear. It’s like the colour bars inside the stone can resemble superman’s fortress of solitude 🤣 hopefully it works out for you as it’s a nice size stone that could be either a ring or pendant
@@The_Opal_Leprechaun It's really a polishing issue, as when it is wet it looks correct.
@@polishedopals8667oh I wasn’t downplaying your work at all 🙂 I did one recently that looked similar but the colour bars inside were like a lattice, criss-crossed. It can be hard to get all the colour the same brightness.
The darker one is really fiery. All great opals though. Keep up the good work. Any questions, send us a message.
Never get over confident cutting opal. Great video for sure!
You just know there's almost always gonna be an issue.
Sounds like you have a good one on the way. Seeing the color in the one from today got me excited, was hoping you'd shine it up!
@@AlabamaUSA1234 I do have a very good one coming... This one, way too small to be anything, unfortunately.
@@polishedopals8667 funny how someone's small can be another's WOW... I'd like to decide not to use it 😂 Looking forward to the next video
You gave it your best and it refused to cooperate. On to the next challenge.
I like to think that the bad ones just give me more time to work on the good ones, because I can start working i.e. Thursday or Friday, 11-12 days in advance, instead of the following Wednesday.
As always, I think it is beautiful. But, thats why I dont do this and you do!
It's not *cough cough*
I always see the very best in opal ... Hopefully you figure something out... I saw such beautiful colors
Nah, it looks good for the side, but it's just holes in the middle.
@@polishedopals8667 I saw that... Heard your disappointment. It's great you showed it. Most never show a bad stone and it happens a lot of the time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me
I always hope for the best. Sometimes it doesnt work out because of the rock, or because of me.
@@ThatOpalGuy I've seen you pull between out of worse
That's opal for you. Never know. That's why we love it so much. Always the mystery of what is underneath. Next one may be wonderful. 😊 Greetings from the Little, Australia.
Little DESERT region of Victoria. 😊
At least it was an interesting inside. I don't think I've had so many holes and loose stones in cavities in an opal before.
@@polishedopals8667 I'm still getting my gear together. You are way ahead of me. We learn on the way. Having a great result is nice, but the learning is way better! Personal opinion. It's fun.
Good job buddy nice stone 😃
Thanks, it's the kind of stone that makes the hobby worth it.
Cushion cut?
Nah, it's pure freeform at this point, and too small to do proper work.
@@polishedopals8667 , inlay then?
@@Kerrsartisticgifts That could be, yes.
Cant believe you created this! Great job!
"Created" eh.
