A trail for your tears
มุมมอง 358 ปีที่แล้ว
This is our first shakedown ride for the upcoming NORRA 1000. Chris promised to make me cry and I did eventually tap out at the top of the world. He grew up riding these trails that are adjacent to his property so he does have the home field advantage..... We are planning to tackle 1200 miles of Baja on a 1990 KTM300 Chris is building for the race.

    5 years later I have a 72 sl350 of my own. My understanding is you're running an xr650r front end, a 2in longer rear swing arm, and an xl250 aluminum rear rim. What's the part number for the rear yss shocks you guys ran. I'd really like to clone you're build to a point but with my own spin. Thank you for any info! From what I've seen you're build is solid and ultra relyable. Also what fuel tank did you use? Thanks again I have a long winter ahead of me.

      We actually only ran the YSS shocks one year because they didn’t work as well as we had hoped. We switched the second year to Ohlins rear shocks and they were much better allowing the bike to track up to 87 mph. The gas tank I believe was custom blown by Clarke, I don’t think that’s a readily available off the shelf part. I’ll check with the builder and if I find out anything different I’ll put it here. You are correct that this bike has turned out to be ultra reliable we ran it in the Mexican 1005 times finishing first and for those endeavors and second on our first try. Each time it ran without needing a rebuild. We did rebuild every other time just as a precaution. Having two cylinders it lugs and pulls through the sand and the whoops without issue. You just point it south and keep the throttle pinned

      @@rebelcav after watching it race and catching glimpses of it in other videos I was sold and wanted to do something similar and this is after coming off an xr650r haha but I've ways loved honda single cam engine s and bikes. I'd greatly apericat any info and insite on the build. While I will not be racing mine (much) I will be deploying it as an adventure bike.

    Congratulations!! Can you tell us about your set up? Are those XL600r forks & wheel? Is that an oil cooler in front of engine? What swing arm & shocks? I still have 72 SL350 from my dad when he bought used, a year old. It still only has approx 4,400 miles on it.

    • @rebelcav
      @rebelcav 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for asking. It actually a front fork from a donor XR600. We were not quite crazy enough to want to race 1300 miles on a front drum brake. The swingarm is stock but was lengthened a bit in our shop to get a bit more suspension travel on the Ohlins shocks. The oil cooler was a summit racing off the shelf unit our mechanic plumbed in. This bike has raced the NORRA 5 times in Vintage Light and has finished every race. Our top speed is about 97 mph and the thing is un-stallable even in deep sand and silt. We have been rebuilding the motor every other race.

      @@rebelcav how long are the rear shocks?

    • @fishhuntadventure
      @fishhuntadventure 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      rebelcav huh I understand more travel in the forks for sure, and disc brakes are an upgrade, but the drum brakes are probably up to the task.... Do you have a site detailing the build? Did I miss it somehow? I’m interested, too. I’m running a CB350F right now (love it) but I really want to sell it and build an SL350 for adding the option of non-road forays. (No interest in new bikes)
