Church without Walls - Let Us Build A House
Frankly, this is not a real sermon, more a homily based on a soft-core exegesis of a new genial hymn from the Presbyterian Hymnal.

This interpretation of "Casting your bread" integrates both verses Eccl 11:1 and 2 and fits within the broader mood of this biblical book/scroll - nicely presented for instance in "Carpe Diem" passage in Eccl 9:7-10.

Well, this is about ancient (Bronze Age and Iron Age) beer making. Interestingly, in Mesopotamia women were those who made beer for their household. And furthermore, drinking of beer in pubs was quite likely associated with sex or prostitution. There are a number of depictions of doggy style coitus over a large beer jar .

Casting bread on the waters is not literally throwing the food into the pond. These are all cryptic and need to be interpreted. How else could we explain Genesis twelve as a start to Abrahamic traditions. Sarai escapes if we interpret it. Spiritual bread is what? Not the same as Physical bread. These need to be understood in the spiritual realm, not the physical. Lay up the treasures in heaven, not earth.

@@danielpaulson8838 It seems to us that you are jumping over the biblical tradition like a grasshopper. We would prefer staying within Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) scroll/book and realities to which it directly alludes. Patriarchal narratives are legendary(perhaps even mythical) in their origins - so no real, historical Sarah. But trading wives was clearly an interesting and important narrative(probably mythical) topos - because it is present at least three times in Gensis, twice with Sarah and once with Rebecca/Rivkah.

The Exodus story is complete monomyth and should be observable as such. I will include a comparison between Moses from 'Exodus' and Jason from the Greek 'Voyage of the Argo. These are conceptual stories built on a template of the human life cycle. Therefore they follow a sequence and that is observable to the trained eye. Isolation (Few called) - Jason saved and sent to Chiron as child. Moses saved in basket. (Jesus follows this pattern too. Escaped to Egypt) Cyclical pain - Phineas has his food defiled on a daily bases. Egypt has plagues. Struggle to leave the past - Jason and crew struggle to leave the island of women. Pharaoh tells Moses they can go, then changes his mind. Calling - Jason comes of age and is ready to get his rightful kingdom. Moses at burning bush. God calls him. Crossing first threshold - Jason loses a sandal crossing river and meeting Palias. Moses removes sandals at burning bush. Supernatural Aid - Jason has help from Goddesses along the way. Moses gets magical staff. (Same as Thor's hammer) Crossing of the second threshold - Jason sails through clashing rocks. Moses runs through Red Sea. Both barely make it. Etc. They are huge and they are all over antiquity. The template is again, based on a humans life, but this template is an inward healing path hidden in an outward sounding, conceptual story. We see something else conceptual. Watch this one. Moses crossed threshold by crossing Red Sea, then spent forty years in the desert. (Again, this is holding a personal concept and is not plain language) Jesus crossed threshold by Baptism from John then spent forty days in the desert. Forty is the clue. It comes from Genesis and remains intact as a consistent analog throughout the Bible.

Many people do not recognize mythical and legendary nature of Moses' story. It starts with him being pulled from the river - there is a number of parallel. One of the oldest must be the Akkadian myth of the origins of Sargon: "My mother was a high priestess, my father I knew not. The brothers of my father loved the hills. My city is Azupiranu, which is situated on the banks of the Euphrates. My high priestess mother conceived me, in secret she bore me. She set me in a basket of rushes, with bitumen she sealed my lid. She cast me into the river which rose over me. The river bore me up and carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. Akki, the drawer of water, took me as his son and reared me. Akki, the drawer of water, appointed me as his gardener. While I was a gardener, Ishtar granted me her love, and for four and ... years I exercised kingship."

That is an interesting statement. Religious intolerance seems to be inherent in monotheistic systems (our deity, and our relationship with that only deity is the only one which is right) These systems also have tendency to be doctrine heavy (followers are required to subscribe to the certain sets of teachings). Pre-monotheistic religions seemed to be more tolerant and more practice (liturgy) oriented. Monotheistic religions can achieve tolerance or inclusivity - but it is more difficult for them and requires constant attention. Similar imagery of the imperial tree is also hinted in Matthew 8:19-20 (and synoptic parallels): A scribe then approached and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." Foxes in their dens and birds in their nests - almost word for word repeats Eze 31 and Dan 4 - thus showing Jesus'' own and/or early church familiarity with this image.

God instructed Moses in Numbers 21 to erect a pole with a brass serpent at the top. Whoever looked at the serpent would be safe from the actual snakes that were biting and killing the Israelites. After this, there were certain people who would go on to worship this brass serpent, who was called Nehushtan (2 Kings 8:14). King Hezekiah set out on a mission to destroy the shrines, pillars, the "sacred post", and the pole with the serpent. Previous kings were weak and failed to tear these icons down. We as believers in Christ should have absolutely no tolerance for idol worship. We should not worship anything made by man, only God Himself.

Of course we do not advocate for idolatry, only a broader appreciation of spiritual diversity of our biblical tradition. You can pick the biblical quotations which you do. On the other hand we can point out to the numerous angels of the LORD sitting in the shade of the holy trees (actually a number of times) or other images of holy trees or trees of wisdom, trees with healing leaves etc. - and as you can appreciate, they go all the way to the last chapters of the Revelation. @@rutgerschurch4861 The connection between Asherah and trees is fascinating, thanks for sharing that. My point is that the trees, in their natural state, are made by God Himself. If we as humans cut down a tree and carve an image out of it to worship a false goddess, we are fooling ourselves and turning away from God. I think modern people look at ancient people as if they are simple minded and superstitious, but current society is constantly worshiping false idols. Last year, Columbia erected a bronze statue of the singer Shakira and someone made the joke that when people in the distant future find it, they will think the statue was made to worship. I would argue that is indeed what we are doing. Idol worship is not a thing of the past, and I think it is important to point out that anything made by man will fade over time and ultimately bears no fruit.

Of course it is Dionysian figure - and interestingly, Jesus is portrayed a number of times in gospels like a larger than Dionysian character - for instance when he changed water into choice wine - 120 or so gallons! Jesus as Dionysus on steroids! If you are interested there are academic books written about it.

I'm a lifelong atheist and I have never been a Christian. I fully support atheism, but I can definitely get behind your sermon. The trend of the Republican party has tended towards a destruction of the Republic and more and more rhetoric that would not be out of place in the Victorian Era. The rhetoric would not be out of place in the age of the Dutch East India company. But even in that age, misogyny was not celebrated. Even in that age, there was not an R culture. There has never been an age where all cultural and social norms, where people were celebrated for being their worst selves was so....complicitly accepted and so much reverence given to the worst of us, and punching down of the least of us. And then it is shifted onto congregations led by ex-convicts, holding theology degrees and a PhD that can be acquired simply by paying a fee and writing an essay. These are no principles and no ideals, and the ideology is based upon gain and upon perceived slights, and for the control of the entire dialogue. I blame Russia. Only the contempt for life and contempt for standards is this normal, but in Russia. Russia is where the truth goes to die. The culture of USA can affect the entire world, and when we are desensitized and dehumanized and listen to the profanity of a profanely led country.... And when we have a former President consorting with mobsters, hooligans, and falling prey to Kompromat...this is the result. When the Berlin Wall came down...this seed of the hordes and the subverters of men spread through the world. It is the Russian disdain that permeates governments around the world. It is the lure of what it means to dominate that has returned to the world. And there is one country that praises domination the most....and it is Russia. Russia is the last of the Victorian world and the last of the contempt that came from the old Roman Empire. So, the contempt that comes from a disdain for others and a culture with a disdain for borders...has been overlooked far too long. The wars that exist now are fed by Russia...and even Iran, as harsh as it chooses to be towards women...towards its own people, in the name of Islam... Is never so lowly as the Criminal State of Russia. The Muskovite ideal...and desire to conquer all....in the name of Russia. Out of spite. Out of disdain. Out of the desire to conquer. We are not like this. We are better than this. Whether we are Christian or not. Whether we are Muslim or not. Whether we are Jewish or not. We are better than this.

On the front page of your website are the following words: "No human is illegal. Women’s rights are human rights. Black lives matter. Love is love. The environment needs our protection. Kindness is everything." By saying that women's rights are human rights, your church is saying that it is pro-ab*rti*n. You also mentioned Albert Schweizer, who wrote "Who among us knows what significance the other living being has for itself and for the whole?" The fact that a church is so progressive and wants the approval of mankind so badly they are willing to allow the sacrifice of unborn human beings is so beyond disgusting it cannot be put into words properly. Genesis 1:26-27 God says "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness...So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." You can't even make it past the very first chapter of Genesis and you are directly contradicting the Word of God. Stop calling yourselves a church and start your own religion, this isn't what Christ preached at all. I hear in this sermon buzzwords for the progressive left that if you throw enough of them together (white, christian, nationalist) you get certain like-minded people in a delusional rage. Revelation 22:18 says "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book". You said that although the Bible tells us that Deacons should be men, "we got over that". That's convenient. In an interview with The Times, you said "“It is actually liberating for people when they recognize that they don’t need to believe in virginal birth or any of the so-called fundamentals and still be a spiritual person.” So-called fundamentals? If Christ wasn't born of a virgin, then the Bible is not the absolute truth, and cannot therefore be the very Word of God. At that point, you are relying on your own intellect to decide what is true and what is not, which is the sin of pride, the very reason Satan was cast down from Heaven into Hell. This kind of mentality is what Christ would call lukewarm. In Revelation 3 Christ said "So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Romans 12:2 says "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect". All I can see from your theology is conforming to this fallen world by bowing to the will of man and our sin. I will pray for you and everyone that attends your church that you see the error in your ways, which are not God's ways. I pray that you can see that Christ's message was not to love people because of their sin but in spite of it; no man or woman that spent time with Christ walked away unchanged, the same is true of believers today. I urge you to take up your cross, deny and die to yourself, and stop building golden calves to appease man. His love does not allow for us to remain as we are.

I think we need more of that. Christian Nationalism places political ideologies about the love of God and how this religion is supposed to take care of its fellow man. It takes all of the Christ out of the equation and leaves only hate and bigotry.

@@Jules-ql5tf “hate and bigotry”. Christ never taught tolerance in the church. When people misused the church he drove them out with a whip. To pretend Christ would be okay with you ignoring his word to marry the spirit of the age is ridiculous. You spit in the face of the Bible when you tolerate sin. Love the sinner, pray for the sinner, but do not enable his sin and encourage it, the path to hell is paved with good intention. If you justify sin you’re doing the work of Satan not Christ. You’re furthering man’s goals not God’s.

@@wyatt1828 People did not misuse "church" but the Jerusalem Temple. That is quite a difference. Jesus had quite a tense relationship with the Sadducees - a priestly sect of ancient Judaism). And Jesus WAS tolerant - he taught tolerance by living it out. He defended people who were hated (like tax collectors) he healed a child of Syrophoenician woman (those were highly suspicious pagans). He had deeply meaningful and loving conversation with Samaritan woman (a different group of YHWH worshipers who were not Jews). He healed a servant of a Roman Centurion (Romans were the occupation power and national enemies). Some of these examples can be of a legendary nature, but there are so many of them, that it is almost certain they reflect his teaching and practice - always placing people above ideologies and religious dogmas.

Softly spoken facts spoken from a left leaning preacher will always be what I expect from a follower of the teachings of Jesus rather than a far-right pastor shouting in tougues, dripped in wealth, about how a demagogue will protect you from the poor and queer.
