    Is it normal for duck egg shells to be leathery or rubbery compared to chicken eggs? They're completely new to me, I just bought some at the grocery store and the entire carton is like that. Now I'm afraid to eat them haha.

    • @homegronhomestead8640
      @homegronhomestead8640 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the shells are 'soft' in any way, the eggs should still be fine to eat, it just happens sometimes when the female cycle is disturbed in one way or another. I've heard that it's most commonly a result of over-breeding, that the male has too frequent/much access to mating with the females.

    About 30 years ago, I bought a corded B&D vacuum/blower ($100) to remove deep piles of leaves from neighbor''s trees. I shredded down 15-1, dried, blowing into a bag over my shoulder. I poured the contents over my dead garden, 140 sq.', and left it. Springtime came, and before planting I needed to apply compost, correct? NO! The leaf matter had turned into BLACK MULCH. No need to compost. I planted right into the mulch and got great results. I was astounded I had started composting in the mid '50s, building huge piles of grass clippings/manure. It took 2 weeks, turning every 2-3 days, misting. I was a lot of work. Now I realized I not longer needed to compost. I just cleared by driveway, front lawn before, but when I discovered the value of shredded leaves, I cleared the neighbor's lawns too. They thanked me. I felt guilty, so when I moved I told them why I cleaned their lawns. I recommended they do it and use the mulch around their plants. I had spent 30 years composting before I accentually discovered the value of shredded leaves. The smaller the better, cordless shredders reduce 20-1. Save the wood chips for fruit trees, but not deeper than 2', and keep moist until the microbes in the ground get well established. They need air & water to get established quicker.

      So good! More ways to compost than there are to dice an onion haha! The woodchips are working well for us since we don't own any special equipment and the chips are all free. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

    thanks man, one time I was feeding a duck at a local park and they suddenly straighten up their neck and froze.... I got terrified, held it between my legs (I "sat" on it) and checked their mouth, there was a lot of bread stuck on the roof of their mouth, I poked it out with my finger and the duck unfroze right away, and flied as soon as I let them go. Now I'm always a bit scared something will happen to them and not know what to do, so here I am ç.ç

    my ducks aren’t as big as yours , pretty sure my two girls are a swedish and a welsh harlequin , and have a male mallard. they have just recently started “breeding” but no eggs yet. google tells me only spring , or depends on bird . and if they do happen to lay before winter , is there anything i can do to help them keep eggs warmer ? i don’t want to incubate i want to give them the mother experience lol . and also , is candling a good way to judge if egg is fertilized ? and if i can get to candle while the lady’s move , will they still sit on them after they’re touched ?

    We have a few ducks, males and females. I regularly find eggs in random places. Other than trying to coax them to a specific places to lay, how can I know if the eggs I do find are still edible? How long can the eggs lay around in nature before they are no longer good to eat?

  • @pamelajaye
    @pamelajaye 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Cast iron stomachs - I expect there are many things ducks can eat which will not hurt them. But if they eat metal they can get hardware disease. I'm not sure if it has to be a specific type of metal. But people could look up hardware disease and find out. You might have to add the word duck to your Google search. Also I have heard someone say when you see your duck opening and closing their mouth, sometimes they're just cleaning out their ears. So yeah, probably want to listen for breath sounds. Not quite sure how to do that with a duck. I did have one girl (Willow) a couple of years ago 2021 She was issuing signs of distress which I don't recall. And she was drooling also. And she usually slept on the top shelf and she couldn't get up there. I had to bring her into the porch. We poured some mineral oil down her throat with a turkey baster. Eventually she recovered. I don't know how. This girl had like four lives. After a couple of days she was eating. But yes last October 6th I carried her out to her pen in the backyard where we kept her during the day to keep her safe from the younger ducks who kept attacking her and left her with a limp. Around 7:00 in the morning and maybe two and a half hours later she died. She was 9 years old. I've had a small bunch of ducks. Right now I think I have seven. In the beginning I had four. I had two others which I sold. I had one that flew away and came back 14 months later. Honestly I thought she was dead. I have never had a duck leave my yard for more than two days. And she was gone 14 months and suddenly reappeared. But I previously counted her among the seven. And then I had one other which I gave away to a friend because he wouldn't stop trying to mate with me. And I had one house duck. So I think that's about 13 adult ducks which lived and died in my house and yard. And two of them made it to age 9. I know they can live longer. And I wish that my first duck, Snuggles, had lived longer. She did have one cataract. But aside from that... The black and white ducks seemed to get this hanging area between their legs. I read a bunch of different things and it seemed it might be ascites. I wasn't going to try to drain it. And they didn't seem to want to eat pumpkin. I forgot the other solutions. So a couple of them just sort of wound down and fell over and died. (Actually petunia was working on dying and Seven was still trying to mate her) and Naomi died when she was 3 years old and we never knew why. She just sat down and she didn't get up. A friend of mine did various interventions and got her back moving and several months later it happened again and she died. But these were never situations where the ducks were gasping as mentioned in the video. These were other things. Willow might have been gasping and choking. The others were not. But when Willow died she was not in one of those choking situations. She had just been going downhill for days and I knew she was going to die. the day before, I Sat in a chair and put her on my chest and cuddled her and cried a lot. And then she wanted to go so I let her. And the next day, she died. Also last summer when it was really hot, a friend of mine was texting me about his ducks. They were gasping and panting. I didn't have any good suggestions. He gave them water with various electrolytes and vitamins and things. And he put fans in front of them. I have never heard of anyone doing this. Then again it's never been this hot in this part of Florida. They all recovered. By the way, I like the way you sweetly told your duck to be quiet and she did. I have to go It's time for my ducks to go to bed like right now

    I have a wild Muscovy duck made a nest in my front yard flower bed next to my front door she has eggs I been talking to her every day to get her used to us. I made her a house with 30 gallon storage box flipped it upside down & cut out 2 sides of it for her to see us coming in & out of my house & easy entrance & escape & gave her pine bedding. figured her babies be hatching around 2nd week of next month. we gave her a name & the rest of her family. she use to come over with the rest of the family they all met us. now she been staying all day & night & take about hour break in late afternoon. I tried different foods, but she rather go forage over at the pond across the street behind people's homes. kinda crazy she stay on her nest while I put up some wall art work around her figured I try the scare crow effect help keep pretors away from her & decorate her nurser Sary area & she still stay there as I do yard work with the machines running & when all the kids are playing out front it doesn't bother her for being a wild duck. I think she getting better at feeling safe & comfortable with us now she allow me to put my hand in her box to give her more bedding when she needs it. I think she might walk the babies over to the pond when they are ready to go live back over there. she a wild duck so I don't know much about ducks.

Wondering if I would be able to release the babies ducklings I was able to hatch in an incubator.? There is a mother duck that comes by me to eat with her baby's. So my question is would she take them as her own? Just curious.

    I also have ideas for your next video theme: Muscovy Ducks Recipe! It's surprisingly very difficult to find ways to cook your muscovy, since it's quite a rare delicacies. The meat are tough if you grill them like a normal meat and the only way I found effective to cook them is by slow cooking them for 8 hours to make pulled meat for tacos and such.

      In short, yes; males can be very territorial, killing young. Sorry, good luck!

    Wild ducks layed eggs in the yard one by one and leaves. Will the ducks sit on the eggs? How long does it take for them to hatch and leave?

      That's a big maybe! Lots of variables there. If they're comfortable and have access to food/water then yes! Time depends on the species.
