Strong Roots Farm
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 มี.ค. 2008
We are Strong Roots Farm, a small regenerative farm in Southern Ohio, raising Grassfed Beef, Pasture Raised Pork, and Eggs. We are a profitable farm that strives to produce the highest quality of meat to our customers, and although we are focused on quality production on our farm we have a Homestead feel compared to the rest of our Big Ag community. Our Channel is focused on providing education through our experience to small farmers and homesteaders in order to build a strong sustainable community with Faith, Family, and Farming as the focus.
We are not full-time farmers. My wife, Jenny teaches 4th grade math at our local elementary school, and I'm an Industrial Engineer working at a near by production facility. We have 3 young boys and are all firm believers in Jesus Christ. I am a US Army Veteran who served 2 tours in Iraq. Together as a family we are extremely grateful that you have chosen to spend time with us by watching and commenting on our videos. Thanks for watching.

Instead of g local use alcohol. Like cheap 80 proof vodka.
Good idea
I have used a brand called jug. It is energy Free uses a straw type system I used them for probably 20 years. Never ever froze. But now in my sacrifice lot, I use it's called the post drinker.... about $400 3 years ago, no concrete pad needed, works on the same principle as a frost free hydrant, sheep , cattle, goats and horses can all use it, the post is my favorite.
Let me know if you have a better way.
I think after basic tools the most necessary tools are a 4x4 truck, flat trailer that has a ramp that can be driven up, and a cattle hauler
I'm a Air Force Retired Veteran. Note not all VAs are the same you might want to check more than 1 out. They have also drastically changed how they operate in the last ten years. My biggest struggle when getting out was trying to find some self worth. I was no longer the go to guy with experience. It took me a while to find a mentor and I am still looking for more but three years into beginning my farm I'm starting to get opertunities.
Our fence installer had equipment and skill to clear the fence line for a nominal charge.
That’s great, if you can tell us, what did you pay per ft when hiring someone to clear and install fence? My estimate was around $6 a ft.
What made you decide not to spray you fence lines with Grazon?
It’s just the market we have chose to be in. We raise 100% grassfed beef that is chemical free. We try not to use any chemicals at all on our farm. I’m understanding to people who use it and don’t blast that method, it’s just something we chose to do based on customer demands in our market.
i understand the theory. I am assuming the combining of the different chickens would be relatively the same as introducing a bunch of teenager chicks to the existing flock?
Gallagher are excellent also
Nice video For scale, are those 5 or 6 inch posts? I’m getting ready to fence my new 5 acre pasture for the first time and trying to decide which posts to use Goal is to run maybe 3 steers
They call them 5-6’s they are all between 5-6 in’. They average 5.5. I use those in the lines and 7-8’s on the corners.
Great advice I love the hedge trimmer idea
Great advice I love the hedge trimmer idea
I prefer to clear my lines by hand equipment is expensive upfront and to maintain just for it to sit alot
Very wise counsel, Mate.
Is it hard to get an electric fence setup to the point that it can keep ground hogs and rodents out? I recall watching lots of electric fencing videos but don't remember them talking about rodents. most of them talk about say... coyotes or other stuff like keeping them from getting out. But if you had say a family garden and you were outside the city limits you might have prairie dogs...
You need some goats.
A heavy duty straight shaft weed eater with a circular saw blade is the easiest way I have found to clear brush.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family thanks for the video 😊
Was going to like this video, but then I noticed the Ohio State hoodie. 😂 Kidding, kidding. Still gave it a like.
Same lol still liked it
lol, it was a free hoodie from 20 years ago. I could care less, but I’m such a tightwad I make it last. My wife makes me wash it once in a while.

I'm a cummins diesel tech and my next 3/4 or 1 ton will be gas. 1 fuel system or aftertreatment failure in the diesel would replace a complete engine in gas burner. As a hobby farmer, pulling camper, misc I cannot justify the current added expense of diesel. But I will keep my old 12 valve. Great video
Great info thanks
Awesome content. Going to talk to wife to implement something like this in our home.
A quality t posts driver is a small first start. I bought a cheap one and it broke hitting me in the top of the head.
$6.00 to weed eat.. you have a twisted Christian Nationalist approach to raising kids. I see resentment in your boys future, created by your need to be a “King”. I’ll bet you voted for Trump too.
I wish I would have known this 27 years ago. My son got mixed up with the wrong company. Now if he gets a job, he earns enough to get what he wants + alcohol then quits his job. Your idea is fantastic! It's a little complicated for a single parent. But if I would have known about it I would have simplified it and made it so it wasn't so much work for me. I encourage you to write a work book. Not to complicated. I can see where this might encourage greed. I'm hoping I just didn't completely understand. Kudos to you for raising money wise children. My son has no idea and won't grow up. Thank you for sharing! Sincerely, Nina from Colorful Colorado USA 🇺🇸
I understand it sounds a little complicated in a quick video, but once you write it down for yourself and get started, it really goes quite easy. We do not have any trouble with greed at this point, if anything it has caused our kids to be more giving because they have the ability to earn and we encourage them to give, it has been a great thing for us. I hope things work out for your son, Christ has been the greatest change in our life, and it could be something that would change his as well if he can go down that road. Good luck to you and your family, thanks for watching.
FYI 0% interest is just interest added on top of the total price. The cash price would have saved you a few thousand. Glad what you did made you money though.
You could buy a old tractor with a hay spear
Please let us know if you decide to try this with your children.
Seeing commercials on your videos now congrats
Thanks!

Beautiful and one of the best videos... A good way of looking at needs
I fought in Desert Storm and suffer from nerve damage I believe was exposure to Serin gas ( nerve agent). I grew up on a farm but after military service moved to the city. After 35 years living and working in the city, I am just a few months from moving to my forty acre farm in North east Texas. I have a guy leasing it out with cattle right now but I'm to old to mess with that. I've decided to run sheep and a few goats to make a little money and easier to manhandle. I have a really good pension so money is not an issue. I just love farm life and I need to stay busy to keep my PTSD in check. I really enjoy the knowledge you share ang good luck with your channel.
Thanks for watching and I wish you the best
Petting is okay if you can still butcher them when the time comes. I had a heifer bull when I was a kid in the seventies. He was stunted. If you get to playful with him he could hurt you unintentionally. These animals are strong and heavy. I use to try and ride him and instead of him becoming tamer he became more playful by throwing his head side to side and putting his head down and pushing into me. Please be careful about small kids around these massive and strong animals. Just because they're friendly does not mean they cant seriously hurt you. The hardest day for me was when my dad loaded my bull/ steer to take him for butcher. Livestock is food and pets don't pay the bills. Love your channel and watching closely how well that Massey holds up. I'm currently trying th choose between Massey, Yanmar and TYM. All three dealers are within 45 minutes of my farm. I love the power shuttle transmission on the massey. Gives you the best of both worlds. Great for ground engaging implements and clutchless loader work. Power shuttle would really extend the life of a gear tractor components.
Agree
Did the it too Mahindra
I really like my automatic tank drain. BTW, if you are planning a shop, a drain under your tank would be handy.(might be a good spot for a slop sink) If your air compressor would be running a lot, you might have to consider air flow for cooling. That probably wouldn't be an issue in a small shop.
Is that the ultimate crib notes for a farmer/rancher on your right arm? ;-)
Lol it definitely gets noticed
Thank you for this video this is a great video and I appreciate the time you put into it I'm a veteran Not a wartime veteran 79 to 83 But I was also in the Army Now I'm 64 And I want to move to Tennessee and start farming And this video has given me a lot to think about And I just want to say thank you
Great video
1:55 - incorrect assumption on how moisture accumulates in a compressed air system
What is incorrect about my assumption?
@@jwmcginnis The inlet air for the compressor contains moisture, as the air is compressed (energy added) and the air temperature increases, at the same time the water holding capacity of the air drops. So the condensation is mostly coming from the air compression and also as the compressed air cools. ie, squeezing a damp sponge
Thanks for the comment and you’re correct. I chose to keep the video simple as a basic set-up and discussion for starting out for my viewers rather than having a discussion on the physics of fluid dynamics within compressed air. My system is a very basic system that I wouldn’t recommend for a heavy use production setting or anywhere that a serious need for daily air was needed. It’s hard to make videos that fit every viewer in every situation. I try to just show what we are doing with small tips along the way. I appreciate you adding to the content with your knowledge, hopefully it will help some of my viewers that are searching for serious air system solutions. Thanks for watching.
My guess: When its warmer - they naturally regulate their fescue intake due to the toxicity. After the first frost the toxicity goes down and the effects of the toxicity (restricted blood flow makes it harder to regulate body temp) goes down as it gets cooler. So intake goes up, and weight gain should go up. My sheep max out their body condition around Dec 1. After Dec 1, the cold weather makes them burn more calories and the grass quality starts dropping.
That’s a great diagnosis. We just released the follow up video. th-cam.com/video/vnIvyKUyZs8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nxMz-YubDvw6_Rex
Great video When it’s truly winter, are we supposed to stop rotating all together? And give the cows the entire pasture and bring out hay? Or do you keep them in a container area like an acre or 2? Just bought 15 acres and getting into beef next year! Will be about 5 acres fenced
We still rotate until the grass is gone. Once you’re done we only rotate when the ground is given too much damage. We leave before the mud comes.
Love it. I have actually heard some Jason (Ohio sheep farmer on TH-cam) that certain grasses turn toxic once they get frosted.

Best gas engine 6.0& 350 chevy ! Fords V10 ! Dodge hemi ! Best Diesel engines Cummins 12 valve! 7.3 powerstroke! 6.7 Power stroke ! Duramax ??? Certain years! Diesel engines to run from ! 6.0 6.4 powerstrokes ! Chevy 6.5 !
Diesel are better for serious hard work! Diesel cost more to maintain! Gas is nice but cant handle heavy weight or being beat on! God Bless Mr Diesel
Thank you for the all the tips.
Probably the best cost breakdown I have seen yet, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and the comment
Excellent comparison. Thanks
20 acre sheep and goat farm is what I’m thinking about. I Have the land, I have to clear about 15 acres of land and need to install fencing, buy my first 20 animals. Estimated this will cost $45,000. What would be a good tractor that will accommodate attachments like a front end loader, auger, forklift? What other attachments would you recommend?
First off I wouldn’t pay more than $150 per Sheep or Goat, and I would start small with your headcount. A good Ram may cost you more if you plan to breed but I would start with breed females. As for a tractor, there are lots of choices and without seeing your land it’s hard to say. To run a post driver or post hole digger you will need a larger framed tractor around 45hp or more. You can always dig by hand to save money or rent a skid steer with a bucket and digger. Depending on where you are located, a chain saw, weedeater, and good electric netting will allow you to use the goats to clear out your fence rows. It will take you longer but you can do it all for less than $1k if you do it by hand. If funds are not your issue and you want to get running faster I would evaluate the cost of purchasing a 40-60hp tractor with a bucket and driver VS. hiring a brush cleaner to come in and clear your property line then hire the fence built. I’m no sheep or goat expert but it’s hard to payoff a big purchase with small animals, or even cattle. I tend to take the more labor but cheap and slow approach. Focus on raising what your family will eat rather than making money from an ag production product. That’s the best advice I can give you when starting. Debt can come quick, and it’s hard to pay down in this game. Thanks for watching!
Also if you do sheep, unless you have a market for the wool do hair sheep. The molt in the spring rather than you sheer them. One less thing to do
