How to Insulate a Finished Wall - KDA Designs
In this video, I demonstrate an unconventional way to insulate a finished wall. Keep in mind, this wont' give you the same results as removing the drywall and insulating to the edges of the studs. I have however, done this on all outside walls in my home and found it made a difference.
It is important that you are fairly comfortable with patching a wall before you start this project. If you have never patched a wall, I would suggest watching a few how to videos on patching drywall...and maybe practice a little.
The tools you will need are as follows:
Stud Finder: amzn.to/3wZOqhX
Painter's Tape (not necessary but nice to have): amzn.to/454EK2h
Drill & Drill Bit:
Spray Foam (Big gap filler)
Scraper: amzn.to/455DLPe
Drywall Compound: amzn.to/3VnMh9g
Good luck and Thank you for watching!

Here is the before and after of a bedroom I renovated. I removed all the old trim, insulated the windows, removed all the carpet, installed hardwood flooring and new trim, painted the walls, and added some art and decorative pieces. Art was also all made by KDA Designs. Check out my channel for full DIY videos on all the steps I took to renovate this space Please Subscribe @kdadesigns and follo...

How many foam cans did you use in this wall project? How many oz in the product you use? Can you share a link to the product you used?
Where is the link to purchase the fridge door gasget? I’ve priced out just one right side French door gasget at $354.00 cdn dollars locally. That does not cover installation. That is extremely expensive and if the replace the other door which has the tabs top and bottom broken off, that would run me $700.00 + for these 2 parts if I do it myself. This is what is holding me back.
omggggggggggg!!! that was suuuuper easy!!!!
Great
Thanks for the tip to remove just one, which is always a chore for me, and clean the other in place. On here right now looking for easier ways to remove them.
I like how you keep your video concise and those end slides with text were great to pass information clearly without wasting time. I am also doing this project and since i will sell the condo i am reluctant to also change the sink, your old sink was pretty good better than mine, a new sink costs above $500 + $200 for the faucet, how much did you pay ? Since the granite countertop will be expensive but adding a new sink + faucet makes it extra expensive.
This video would have been much less pleasant without an attractive woman.
You are absolutely stunning ! Sorry got slightly distracted 😅...great vid was very helpful 👍 👌
What’s your opinion on the current state of crypto regulation?
I inherited some chairs from a nursing home. They are dining room chairs base is wood, and they are upholstered on the mid back. My question is:there are roller balls on the 2 front feet? What should I do to those?
great video. i have the same pump and had the exact same problem. thanks for walking me through it.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm happy I was able to help! :)
Great video, thanks for sharing. Not having snap ring pliers, I was able to get off the snap rings by prying up a bit with a walnut pick and then getting a knife blade behind it to pop it out... worked great. Also on mine the plastic ramp covers had 4 phillips head screws on each side besides the top 2 that had to come out. Saved me a ton of time having your video to know how to tackle this!!!
Thank you for the comment and for watching the video! It was a bit of an out of the box fix for me ;) I really appreciate you taking the time to share feedback and additional options for viewers. Have a great day! :)
This is awesome. I watched this video and hour ago and fixed an issue I've been thinking on for a week.
Thank you so much for letting me know! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and I'm so happy I was able to help!
Really nice work. One thing my wife does is paint the pieces of wood on the trim that goes on the floor before you nail to the post to make it more waterproof. Thanks for the video.
That is a great idea! Thank you so much for the additional tip. I appreciate you taking the time to watch it! :)
Impressive - all due respect...I might be in love. Thank you for sharing, KDA!
Haha, Thank you so much for taking the time to watch it and for the kind words! :)
That was genius
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it! :)
Hi Kate, thanks for the video, just wanted to ask for an update on the sturdiness of the fences? I'm thinking of using the spikes for my fences but wasn't sure if they would be wobbly. If you can give me your thoughts of the spikes after sometime that would be much appreciated. Thanks again. Harry
Hi Harry, No problem! Its a few years later and they are still very sturdy. I do however have a fence about 10' behind them that I think, blocks out some of the wind. I built this on somewhat of a hill so the posts at the top are about 2' shorter than the ones at the bottom. I would probably go no higher than 8' if they are in the open. This year I took off the solar light caps and pounded the posts into the ground (after a solid rain) as they had lifted about 3" over the years but that was the first time I had to do that. They have held up well so far but I also go out every year and make sure everything is stable after the winter. I certainly wouldnt do a full fence line with them but it worked well for about 25'. I hope this helps! :)
Thank you but too much taking. The video could have been cut in half.
Thanks for the feedback and for the view!
good inspiration your Amazing... my trench is for pipe .. you are the executive supervisor ...
Haha, thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! I was not even sure I would post this one but I'm glad I did! :)
hi @kdadesigns I am still working on my trench , I LUV your technique the Less rain , the more gets done .. stay safe 👍
You did a great job! Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words :)
Won’t last in a winter environment
Actually, 5 years later they are still standing strong. Thank you for watching!
I'm having a similar problem my pump is not turning on how do I know if my on-off switch is bad besides testing it since I don't have a tester at the moment
Honestly, the only way I knew it was the switch was by taking it off. The pump was under a year old so I was not about to buy a new one before trying to change the switch. I wish I had a better answer but I macgyver a lot. The switch was only about $9 at the time on amazon so I took the chance knowing I could return it if that wasnt the issue.
She said, here u have something t do!! 😂😂❤

I'm thinking of using 8 of these for a 5m x 3m pergola. What do you think?
Apologies for the delayed response. For a 5 meter x 3 meter pergola, I would probably not use the spikes because that is a fairly large structure to use spikes with. If one comes up a bit over the years, it will throw everything off. For a pergula, I'd suggest cementing them in so you have a really stable structure with no possibility of shifting. After 5 years, I had to take off the solar caps and pound the posts back in as they had lifted a couple inches. I suppose one time in 5 years is not bad but if I were you, I would use cement for the pergula. Sorry, I know its a bit more complicated than the spikes but you'll have a solid structure for years without having to adjust anything down the line. :)
@kdadesigns I've put the spikes in now lol. It will have decking on the ground too but I think I'm going to dig a couple of inches around them and put concrete in. I didn't want to put wood into the ground so let's see. My fear was actually them sinking a little into the ground so you saying yours lifted a little comes as a surprise. If lifting is more of a chance than them sinking, then I might as well screw the frame into them so that the weight of the deck will keep them down. Bear in mind no water will get to the ground as it will be sealed all around as well as having a roof above the whole structure.
She's pretty chonky. Good for you to encourage her to get her furry butt moving
Lily, such a beautiful name for a beautiful dog.
She is a wonderful dog with quite the personality. I almost lost her 6 months ago so every day is a blessing :)
Awesome .. might want to add that polymeric comes in different colours and types - example there is a product made specifically for wider gaps
Almost every video about these post setters / ground spikes the guys all say level, but your the one that got it right. Plum & secure. Level is on a different plane. Thanks for the video.
Not many notice! Thank you so much for watching and for the comments. That made me smile :)
Or we can insulate before finishing the wall
yes, of course that would be ideal if you are building a new space. This method is for a finished wall that you dont want to demo...its a lot less work than removing all the drywall to insulate and then reinstall
Thank you for your video , I found switch on line
I am glad you found it helpful! Hope it goes well!
Amazing! Thank you for such a useful video!
No problem! Thank you for watching - I hope it goes well! :)
What a mess 😂
Thank you!
you are welcome! thank you for watching!
Do you have a follow up on this vinyl floor so we can see how well it has held up?
It looks exactly the same as it did when I installed it. 🙂 it hasn’t shifted and has held up really well, especially considering it is the entryway from the garage!
Thanks for that as i am getting ready to put down 5ft x 5ft patio pavers in my small backyard. Looks like i just need the road base and the locking sand and i don't have an air blower you made it look so easy. And also by the way you're a beautiful woman wow
No problem! Not everyone has the expensive tools so I try to use basic tools most homeowners will have. I appreciate the kind words! Thank you for watching!
I had the privilege of meeting Kate, what an incredible driven person with great ideas I wish you great success because you do a great design
Great video. Considering going this route. How have the post and fence on spikes held up? Would you still recommend?
my apologies for the delay. My FT job has kept me travelling lately! I would still recommend it as mine have held up well. I have had some shifting (mainly just the ground pushing them up an inch or so) due to some crazy weather but plan on taking the sledge hammer to the top of them this summer but all in all, its nice to have the added privacy. They have been up for a few years and still look great! Thank you for watching :)
so where do I buy the switch?
apologies for the delayed response! Too much travel lately! I got my switch on amazon. There is a link in the description box for the video. I hope the job goes/went well!
Nice job
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind words :)
I cannot believe what a beautiful job you did AND with the washer and dryer still in place. You're amazing. Great job
Thank you! Well, the washer and dryer were the toughest part! Lots of little mini lifts! ;) Thank you for watching!
How do i remove it if its just the spikes that are in barely poking out the ground please?
I would probaby dig around them a bit. Can you use the same method if you create a hole around the spike so you hae something to connect to?
Thanks, this video gave me the courage to do it on my own and it was easy!
That makes me so happy! I'm so glad you found it useful :) Thank you for the feedback!
Does anyone know where I can find more videos on grease maintenance places, grease type, for this specific machine?
What size pvc pipe was that 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 great video
Looks great
Porcelain, ceramic, or marble? In a laundry room? I guess along with gold-plated faucets and appliances, too. Talk about trying to figure out ways to spend all your money. Thank goodness I don't have that problem. HD carries pre-rolled and packaged 6x8 and 8x12 remnants for $25 and $50 respectively. You can't touch that anywhere. And they're decent--it's just that it's whatever design they happen to get in. So if all you need is flooring and the design doesn't matter, it's just the ticket.
The underlayment should be under all walls, then the walls built on top
I respectfully disagree here. I would not be cutting into the drywall and wedging it under it. If the water is coming down the back of the drywall, it would pool out onto the top of the underlayment which would make contact with the flooring. Thank you for watching!
@kdadesigns you want a continous airflow under your floors and behind you walls. Floors go down first underlayment then plywood then flooring then build walls on top. If water gets under floor or behind the walls there is constant airflow behind all of it to dry out the moisture. We are refinishing our basement now. There is a huge misconception on building walls first.
@@Embizzle-2277 Thank you for the response. I still disagree with lining the underlayment right up to the cement foundation. Think about this, if water is coming down the cement foundation and stops on top of the underlayment, It will pool on top vs below. If you dont have i edged right up to the cement foundation, it will flow to the lowest point below the underlayment with no access to your nice, new flooring. Agreed, if you can tuck it under the drywall and leave a space for water to move, that is a benefit but i would never put it right up against the foundation. We are however talking about 2 different types of scenarios here. Keep in mind, in many scenarios the walls are already up and have been for years. That scenario is what this video is based on. Good luck with your basement!
Did you have an urge to take a bite of the insulation? This is a genuine question
Lol, No I never had the urge to eat it. Was never a big cotton candy fan ;)
@@kdadesignsyou have no idea what you’re missing out on (:
