Conlon Nancarrow Interview
In April of 1977 Charles Amirkhanian journeyed to Mexico City to talk with composer Conlon Nancarrow, who had settled there after a self-imposed exile from the United States, following the harassment he experienced over his involvement with the Communist Party, and his fighting in the Spanish Civil War. The two discussed the mechanics of composing for the player piano, a process of manually punching literally thousands of holes in long rolls of paper. Nancarrow also relates his association, or lack there of, with other composers, his dissatisfaction with the lack of temporal control in the electronic music of his day, and his experience studying counterpoint with Roger Sessions. Sounding very relaxed and genial, Nancarrow also goes into some detail about how he composes and describes some of his later works.

19:10 First time I have heard Frank Zappa deliberately lying! Of course they do not "want" to clap their hands, their are being manipulated to do so. And when everybody around you acts this way, you will get suspicious, reproachful looks from the people around you if you do not participate. I repeat myself, today it is about "clap your hands", tomorrow it might be "burn the witch" or "kill the white supremacist"....

17:50 This is why I loathe masses - on one occasion, they are being made to clap their hands frantically, on the next one, they are being induced to go out and murder. Masses are the most despicable type of human existence - I am absolutely sure, that Frank Zappa would approve my sentence.

This is not Frank's idea of having a good time. His idea of having a good time was to have sex as much as possible, and he believed that if people had more sex, they would have good mental health. He believed that politicians passed 'bad' laws because they weren't getting enough nookie.
