Keeping Demons at bay… hmmm.. For me that’s not obsessing about my reputation, image, ego, comfort, or pride…. Not giving a damn about what people say, do, feel, believe, or think of me and not basing my self worth on the approval of others, thinking for myself and really letting everything and everybody roll off my shoulders…. Accepting reality for what it is and not what I want it to be (which is very hard) and grieving over losses and short comings and accepting things and just letting them go as they don’t matter anymore….. it’s always do better next time…. Learn from my mistakes…. Forgive myself and others…. Let go of grudges and try to move on as best as I can. One foot at a time…. But I tend to self isolate and record music because that’s where I find my happiness…. Away from the noisy world and into a much louder room that drowns them out…. Music has been a passion of mine since I was a kid and nothing brings me greater joy except the creator that gave me the gift… I post this in empathy because I know a little bit of where that’s coming from…. Moving around, recording, producing, traveling, I have at least some idea of what that’s like…

Writers block??? I may stand corrected in the distant future but my opinion on this has remained the same for many years. Writers block can be completely destroyed when you can establish a title and a direction and a theme for the song or album you are about to write. For me it’s finding the cover art first with the title and theme of every track on the list…. You then write story boards as if to create the filmography for each track…. Then you write a grocery list of things you want put in each track… for instrumental diversity.. Then you create an instrumental storyboard that reflects each tracks intended film…. You get only a click track without a ping to keep track of the grid, not the metronome…. Drummers keep the damn count not the machines…. You pick the key and key changes if necessary that directly reflect the illustrations…. You be box the entire instrumentals… Do drums, strings, and beyond… Do the vocal phrasing… Then write a series of random phrases that pertain to each story board…. Then replace the worthless nonsense in vocal phrasing with lyrics and vocal tracks…. Destroys writers block instantly….. Say nothing about the fact that you can pull up thousands of songs based on the subjects you’re about to write because literally… nothing under the sun is actually …. New…. It’s just, remade and refashioned into something into someone else’s own words and notes and ways of expressing the same things…. So… You should never really run out of ideas with the right understanding and writing process…. Unfortunately… It takes allot of humility to read and understand all that… To realize what this is and what it’s worth….

Wow! This video came up first as soon as I opened the TH-cam app! I needed to hear this because I’ve been struggling with writers block too and trying to live life in a more healthy and better way. This is my first time getting to know who Oli Sykes is, obviously Ive heard a few Bring Me the Horizon songs and Oli seems like a really great guy! I love this Cameo vid he did for you, as I said I have writers block and I’m wanting to be a musician and this even reassures me more to seek inspiration from other people as I really wanna get creative and create my own stuff.

Oli is one of the best poets out there. He is a true artist and his lyrics are some of the best and most beautiful lyrics i've ever heard. He cares a lot about our cruddy world and the people in it. He puts all his pain into his art. I fucking love this guy and this band.

thank you so much for sharing this. he's such a huge inspiration, and it's really comforting to know even your favorite artists struggle in the same ways you do!

What I take from this is : For longevity and consistency without burnout, take breaks. Go outside. Be active. Take a breather from your work with these, including being connected with people and looking at other media or outdoor reference for idea. When you take a shower or before bed when there’s nothing to do your brain is processing everything and taking in new things.

He comes across as such a wonderful gentleman, his aura is beautiful.
