TOKYO 35 mm Street Photography (Fujifilm X-T5 POV)
In this video, I did some 35 mm (23 mm APS-C) street photography with my Fuji X-T5 at the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival in Tokyo. Probably the most fund I've ever had doing street photography in Tokyo and I hope you enjoy watching!
I did use my Ricoh GR for a little bit, but the lack of water protection forced me to swap out to my Fujifilm X-T5 and 23 m f1.4.

Using the Ricoh GRIII at Night / Photography Vlog in Japan

I photographed the Kagurazaka Awa Odori festival in July with my Ricoh GRIII. I have to say, although I love it, the Ricoh GRIII is not always the best camera for every job, particular in low light with fast moving subjects. The Ricoh GRIII remains my daily driver, and personally, the best camera to bring with me 90% of the time; but there are times when its shortcomings are too apparent and I ...

    Hi James, great photos. What focus settings do you use on your xt5 for street photography? Mostly shooting in crowds I use asc, zone focus, photometry multi, aperture open minimum at 8 and I am not happy with the sharpness of the photos. (Fujinon 18mm 1.4). Thanks in advance. Jakub

    • @jamesford_jp
      @jamesford_jp หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there, Jakub. I typically use AFS with the small point and shoot at 1/500ss and adjust the aperture depending on exposure. This works for me most of the time. I've never used the 18 mm 1.4, but I can’t imagine it being widely different in quality from the 23 mm 1.4 LM WR, which is what I use most of the time and have found to be excellent. Do you use Capture One or Lightroom? That may also be a factor… I hated how my photos looked in LR.

    • @jakub8095
      @jakub8095 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the quick response. I am using LR and the fuji old firmware (2.01?). I am afraid to upgrade the camera to the new version because of autofocus problems. I also noticed an interesting thing. The same lens, manual mode, aperture 16 shows a very narrow range of focus. Maybe is a bug. Thanks for your help!

    • @jamesford_jp
      @jamesford_jp หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m on the latest firmware for the X-T5 and haven’t noticed a discernible difference in AF performance… but I’ve always found AFS to be more reliable than AFC, and I think AFC is what most people complain about. For the time being tho, you probably don’t need to upgrade unless you really want Reala Ace.

    Hi James, thank you for this further beautiful insight into one of the many festivals that take place in Tokyo at this time of year. In this video it is particularly charming to be able to observe the water effects. You have taken some very good photos, yes!! For example 3:55 how happy the child is!! 4:28 and 6:31 looks like snow instead of rain. 5:04 there seems to be brief eye contact between the two of you. I also like this snapshot 5:16 - the woman with the hat and the little girl having fun. 5:49 a beautiful photo! 6:54 as well. I like the alternation between situation photography and portraits picked out from the crowd. 9:19 so beautiful - this happy child! My favorite is this photo 9:44 - how this little child stands there full of contentment, as if it is completely absorbed in this little branch that it is holding in its hand, as if the surroundings are not important at this moment. And on top of that it is standing on the rainbow - how beautiful!! I was hoping you would take a special photo of it as you walked towards it. A really beautiful situational photo!! But my second favorite is at 9:50, also beautifully captured, this cheerful and happy child who is completely focused on the here and now! Thank you very much, James, for showing us this lively, happy atmosphere, wish you a nice weekend and all the best - モニカ

      I’m glad you enjoyed it, Monika! I was so happy to be at this festival for the first time during the main event, since the last time I tried to go, I misread the schedule and went after the water throwing part, so it seemed kinda dead and boring. Thankfully, this year I managed to make it on time AND it was absolutely amazing! 😆

    If you’re going to shoot at night, you kind of have to use the snap focus feature. Street photography benefits most from using zone focusing. Your depth of field correlates to how much & what part of the frame is in focus. The snap focus options are more or less, the digital version of the zone focus method on a manual camera. It even gives you a bar to tell you how much of the DoF zone will be in focus. Then you just wait for your subject to be within that space & every time you click the shutter, you’ll know it’s tack sharp. It’s a game changer once you get the technique down

    • @koobs4549
      @koobs4549 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You should try using the snap focus feature, it’s basically a digital representation of zone focusing. It gives you a bar to help visualize the distances within the frame that will be in focus. Once you know your min focus distance, your pictures will be sharp as long as the subject is within that zone of focus. The best part is that you never have to wait for AF or even mess with manual focusing at all.

  • @fredschmidt8609
    @fredschmidt8609 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know what you mean about 28&35. With my X-T5, I use Sports Finder mode for a 29% crop, both jpg & raw. It gives 23(35-ish) FOV with my 18 1.4 with a push of a Fn button. The X-T5 might have been better considering the 3-way tilt screen.

    • @jamesford_jp
      @jamesford_jp หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah… it can be a bit off putting just how small things appear on 18 mm when you’re not close enough, compared to 23 mm at least. Also, never thought about using Sports Mode like that. Nice trick!

It almost feels like a treat to shoot film… kinda like going to a nice restaurant every once and a while 😅 Now perhaps the more you just start doing it, the more “normal” it may begin to feel and it might be easier to detach yourself from it. Hard to say though, as I only shoot film a handful of times a year and I am perfectly happy being a digital shooter. I’ve actually been very interested in Pentax’s new half frame camera, as that turns a roll of 36 into 72 shots.

    Shinbashi was one of my favourite areas when I visited Tokto. Good balance of cohesion and novelty. Feels less messy than other parts, but still has its own flavor. Honestly thought I wouldn't watch Japan videos after my trip, but your videos are always an enjoyable watch. Thanks for all you do James 😊

      Heheh glad to hear 😆 Shinbashi is a fun area. I’ve admittedly kinda burnt myself out from going there, since I used to spend a lot of time shooting there, but even now it’s nice to revisit from time to time. That place has personality.

    nice insightful video. the 90 f2 is my favorite lens and i like it for the rare times i do street photography for close detailed shots that would normally be missed with a wide or standard focal length and intimate moments from a comfortable distance :) the lens is great for festival and music clubs too

      I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I definitely prefer wider lenses, but the 90 has its place. I’ve really liked using it this summer at various festivals 🙂

    Hello James! Here, we have experienced temperatures of 35 to 38 degrees, on average, 10 degrees more than normal for this time of year. It has been somewhat exhausting and tiring, so I understand well the difficulties you have felt! Thank you very much for sharing photos and videos. I'm waiting for the next episode! Have a nice weekend!

    I’m pretty sure you’re the only one who noticed any neck or double chin issues! Overall, great photos and video. I stumbled across your channel just now. I bought an XT5 last year to replace my old Nikon DSLR. It’s been great. I’m always on the lookout for folks like you who are using my same equipment, but perhaps in different situations or with different lenses. I’m sure I’ll be watching more of your videos. Best wishes!

    Some really juicy shots there. I *just* went out with a 35mm lens today and I've been using a 20mm before that, so holy cats did I have to readjust my shooting. I didn't realize I was so tied to my focal length, but maybe it's a good thing. So I have a chance to learn. Sorry you're not feeling well. I hope you get well soon.

    • @jamesford_jp
      @jamesford_jp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I get what you mean. Sticking to the same focal length for a long time can make it feel really awkward and hard to use another, especially if they’re in the same category (35 mm to 28 mm for example). Good to change things up from time to time.
