To Earn Our Bread: Performing for Pabuji
Keywords: Rajasthan; epic; Pabuji;women singers; bhopas; ravanhatta
This film provides a unique glimpse into the sacred musical tradition and lives of musicians known as 'bhopas', and 'bhopis', performers of the sacred 'Epic of Pabuji'.
Against the backdrop of magnificent scrolls depicting the life story of Pabuji, after dusk has fallen, the male bhopa's brandish their stringed instruments known as 'ravanhattas' and begin to intone the epic. At emotive high points in the story, their wives, known as bhopis, then respond by singing the high-pitched arias they have been trained to sing over decades. Paired together in childhood, these couples have dedicated their lives to this sacred vocation.
When invited to perform at village gatherings, the bhopas sing the epic to honour their deity, Pabuji, and bring blessings of their god to their audiences, sometimes in the aim of healing animals and invoking rain. In this way, these bhopas earn their 'bread'. What is extraordinary is that many of these women bhopis have achieved fame, greater social status and economic success than many Rajasthani women as a result of their vocal proficiency.
This film was shot in four locations in Rajasthan with four different groups bhopa/bhopa musicians to illustrate their diversity, and it includes key performance excerpts plus interviews with both male and female musicians. Interestingly, it is the women, in particular, who speak proudly and eloquently of their determination to pursue their ancestral
vocation.
The film is subtitled in English.

Singing the epic of Pabuji, Against the magnificent painted scroll known as 'Phad', is a divine vocation, inherited by musicians in Rajasthan Adivasis from Their ancestors. The epic is unique as it is sung by a woman (bhopi). She sings at high volume and pitch while her husband (bhopa) accompanies her on a 'ravanhatta'. Exploring the music and tradition of this fourteenth century epic across Ra...

Please do not impose your white christian (?)perceptions on a people and civilization with a continuity as old as humanity itself. Your video is beautiful - leave it alone to speak for itself. Do not cast the same shadow on these people of our land as has been cast on the Romany of Europe. Now THAT is discrimination and abuse. These jogis are not unique to Rajasthan. They are found all across our land, as different peoples speaking different languages. and even having different traditions, mores. They are NOT discriminated against. Their ways are different from the ways of the settled urban dwellers and both leave the other alone to their ways. If they had been put upon would they still be travelling our land freely, singing their songs, eating their kind of food, wearing their kind of dress, having their mind of marriage, etc. etc.? And many homes wait for the annual visit of these communities for the herbal medicines, charms, embroidery work, etc. that they bring with them to sell. Do you know that one of our primary deities Subramanya, the son of Shiva and Paarvathi, who gave us our martial arts, is worshipped in our temples along with his consort Valli, who our legends speak of as the daughter of the chief of one of these communities? They are called Kuravanji. Every Hindu, of whatever community, urban or rural, worships Her. A book several thousand pages long can be written about these unique people of our land. Please keep in mind that when there is difference in two people’s way of living, it is the righteous thing to not just retain one’s own ways but also to accept as given the right and freedom for the others to retain their ways. It is not Dharma to force the other to become and be like me. Then what happens when the ways are so contrary to each other, say in matter of occupation, food, ethical beliefs etc.? If one community celebrates with pig meat and another community strongly condemns it; or if one community requires to bathe every morning while another believes in not bathing from birth to death; or if for one community a sister-in-law is equivalent to a mother while in another two or more men treat one woman as a common wife? There are many such examples one can lay out. Instead of either community stopping the other from living its way, it would be the right thing to live in separate areas and come together only in public spaces where certain public and common rules apply and which everyone should follow. And if one community prefers that the other that is so different from itself does not enter its own private space called Home, it has the right to keep the other out. This is what has been happening in our land for untold millenia. This the reason that this land which is less than one-third the size of Europe has the greatest and most bewildering varieties of people, living in reasonable harmony for untold millenia. Any and all violence between communities began only after the entry of the EXCLUSIVIST religions and cultures into our land. This balanced ecosystem was disturbed, torn apart and distorted by the British and their mental menials in our own land in just three hundred years of colonial rule, leaving an utter mess. The British as a people, and the white christian as a group, are guilty of much of the pain and sorrow that our world has been suffering.. My request to all explorers like you, is to come without any preconceived notions and prejudices. You will be better explorers then.
