King Jumong : The Rise of Goguryeo Kingdom
Jumong, a legendary figure in Korean history, was the founder of the Goguryeo kingdom. His story, deeply rooted in Korean mythology and recorded in historical texts, explains how he escaped from Buyeo, a kingdom where he was born and raised.
Jumong was born to Lady Yuhwa, a daughter of the river god Habaek, and Hae Mo-su, a divine figure. Raised in the royal court of Buyeo under King Geumwa, who took him in after discovering his divine origin, Jumong grew up to be a skilled archer and a talented leader. However, his abilities and potential threatened the king's own sons, who became increasingly jealous and fearful of losing their claim to the throne.
The tensions between Jumong and the king's sons escalated, and they plotted against him, seeking to eliminate him as a rival. Sensing the danger to his life, Jumong decided to flee Buyeo. According to legend, he made a daring escape on horseback. When he reached a river that seemed impassable, Jumong prayed to the heavens, and a school of turtles and fish formed a bridge, allowing him to cross safely.
After his escape, Jumong traveled to the land of Jolbon, where he eventually founded the kingdom of Goguryeo in 37 BCE, laying the foundation for one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. His escape from Buyeo is remembered as a crucial moment in Korean history, symbolizing his destiny to become a great king.
