Documenting "softroading" explorations (nearly) from the beginning.
DIY Car Camper Conversion with Overland Kitchen | Full Subaru Forester Build on a Budget
A rundown of my newly completed (or nearly completed) car camping conversion for my 2015 Subaru Forester.
As mentioned in this video, there are many other examples of Subaru car camper builds on TH-cam. My goal was to go beyond some of the most basic platform-only builds, but with a modular setup that can store in my trunk space.
For the best full Subaru conversion I've seen (seat delete required), check out Chase Christopher's Outback build: th-cam.com/video/x_krCzk3oMQ/w-d-xo.html
For a build similar to mine geared towards those with little to no building experience (and my first Subaru design inspiration), check out softroadingthewest's camp kitchen breakdown: th-cam.com/video/7Smek9DYsII/w-d-xo.html
While most of this build could be completed with a circular saw and standard drill/driver, I did use a Kreg Jig throughout. I have the cheapest version available (which has served me well for several years). Since I bought mine, it's been updated to make it easier to switch between different materials: www.kregtool.com/shop/pocket-hole-joinery/pocket-hole-jigs/kreg-pocket-hole-jig-310/KPHJ310.html

NO-BUILD Subaru Forester Car Camper Conversion (How-To)
มุมมอง 52K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A look at how I set up my stock 2015 Subaru Forester for car camping with zero building required. #CarCamping #VanLife #Overlanding #Subaru #Subie #DIY Music at the end courtesy of Bensound.com ("Sweet").
Im just seeing this in 2024 could you please say what size The totes are or add a link? They fit perfectly and it would save so much time on my part guessing! Thanks
Got damn … practice and cut out all the !!!
This video is way too d-r-a-g-g-e-d out. It could easily have been half as long without leaving anything out. My attention kept wandering.
"...Some additional tie-down straps...bungee cords...dog..." Brilliant. Love the video! Thanks, man.
How tall are you? I am wondering for the sleeping situation if your body fits laying down or if you have to curl your legs or anything
Very nice.
I don’t see the point in sleeping in a car if you’re legitimately camping. In other words this sort of stuff should be reserved for stealth camping where you’re not allowed to be camping in the first place. But the problem with using a Forester is that you then have to block the windows which alerts the authorities that something suspicious is going on while at the same time making it impossible to surveil your surroundings for any sort of impending threat. So really if you want to do stealth camping you pretty much need a work van with no windows in the cargo bay. The best way to camp as an adult is with a larger tent you can stand up in in conjunction with a cot of some sort so you’re not sleeping on the ground. If you feel there may be a security threat then sleep with a gun. The cheapest way to sleep indoors while camping in a Forester is to tow a 5X8 cargo trailer and put the army cot inside of your trailer. Then you’ve got your own mobile Japanese capsule hotel and you can even stow a camping toilet in there where it won’t stink up your car if you couldn’t empty it immediately.
Hey dude do you have affiliate kinks for any if this stuff? I'm going to set up some if this and would love you to get a commission
Great video. I have the same coffee pot, I’ll never go back to an electric pot.
Thank you so much! I’ve watch 100’s of these No builds and this is the best of all of them! Put mine together today! Thanks again!!
This isn't a bad idea at all! Thanks for sharing!
What are the dimensions of the boxes?
Just bought an 09 subie outback and this was perfect for what ive had in my head. Thank you for giving me the visual i needed. Would love to see your finished build and what and where you store everything.
Do you think I could do this on both sides to be able to sleep two people?
Great video! Simple and efficient.
Hey dude can you share the brand and capacity of those totes? They look like they fit perfectly and it's certainly a more tidy look than the random stash I've got behind the seats!
looks terrible, you have room to make a luxurious queen size bed and you did that ....
Would you be willing to show the dimensions on that bottom base plate foundation/how to on it?
I do not understand the purpose of these videos. Yes, we understand this can be done. How come no one includes their design or measurements? Without design or measurements it is just a "look at what I did" video. Brings new meaning to DIY.
Ingenious!
Nice job! I really like the platform drawer and your other thoughtful details. As I contemplate doing a similar build for 2 adults, my wife and I have varying degrees of claustrophobia. I'm curious about "face space" (as someone else mentioned) and ease of crawling into and out of the sleeping area. I would appreciate tips and/or video addressing these topics. Peace.
Hello!! Great setup. I was curious on the dimensions for the storage container. I appreciate you, thank you in advance.
Even without any platform it is impossible to sit straight in forester
I don't have a garage and my budget is limited. After watching so many forester camper conversion videos, this is the only one I feel I can adopt! A big thank you!
Well done buddy! I love the simplicity of this set up and how anyone could potentially do this at the drop of a hat and just dissapear. Thanks for sharing
Best thing is no building
Nice and simple. I'm now an old man-- 66. However, at different periods of my life ,from my early twenties and times in between, I traveled in an old pickup truck with a camper shell . I had nothing built in. I used old milk crates, and old suitcase, and a duffle bag. I'm still using the ancient Coleman camp stove that I bought in 1973. I bought a used Coleman Lantern when I was twenty-five, in 1980. Still using it, too. For a bed I used a couple backpacking pads with a two inch thick piece of foam mattress on top. I take real pillows, a couple of sleeping bags, sheets and a wool blanket, so I can be flexible with the weather. After a work accident and having a vehicle smash into me three times when I was sitting still in traffic, I need more padding and pillows than when I was young. I finally sold my 97 F150. I would love to have another truck of similar size, but they are not made any more! So, I am considering buying a Subaru for travel and camping. I'd like a van, but can't find one that is reasonably priced. New ones are all pimped out with ass-warmers and crap that I care nothing about. And paying almost $50k for van just violates my sense of economy and normality (although at my age I can afford a new van and pay cash). If I can sit up in the back of a Subaru and read, I'll get one.
what automobile did you buy?
Your volume is way too low. I would like to listen and I'm sure you have things that you would impart to me as someone who is going to live out of her car. Cannot hear you.
This is perfect for us no tools, no woodworking skills, weekend campers. Great creativity. Thank you.
Heating thru the cold night please?
GreAt video~
A great way to show how simple it can be to just load up and get out there, no need for a van and a $5000+ setup
So you got rid of your spare tire in storage compartment for tools & emergency items?
Also, FrontrangeForester, can you please confirm that you can sleep comfortably flat and stretched out in the back? , or are you sleeping at an angle? i'm looking at measurements of the 2021 forester and it is 60" from back to diverseat (when teh trunk is closed), which is much less than the 80-86" of the Outback. That's why I'm wondering if the Outback is better... though I don't like the higher price tag. :(
This is a really, really informative and helpful video. My only suggestion if you try again, is to ensure you have a mic near your face so we can hear you better! Thank you so much for sharing these tips and tricks!
also what were the measurements of the wood?
The wood is 2'x4' precut plywood. It's usually in the "hobby wood" section at Home Depot.
The color of your car matches your dog and hair 😆
this is awesome. all the build options are overwhelming me and I dont have much time to prep before my first car camping experience coming up. this is exactly what I was looking for, something super easy! love how simple but also multi purpose it is with creating a low table outdoors. so the pieces of wood you got were already pre cut from Home Depot?
Already cut, yes! 2'x4', usually in the "hobby wood" section.
Well done. Both the set-up and the video.
What model year is your Forester?
2015
Can you give the dimensions of the totes? You showed from above so I couldn’t see the depth. I have a Forrester too and would like to mimic your set up. 👍.
I also have a Forester (SH Gen3) and would like to know
Some good ideas. Thanks!
why attempt storage UNDER your bed ?? put the bed DOWN as low as possible and get some 'face space' ...... do your storage next to your bed.....
if you're going to do drawers with a removeable top like that, instead or a pin, just cut 2 long shallow notches in the top rails of the drawer to accept the top...
@@robaldridge6505 I wanted things to be secure so they are less prone to coming loose, especially on rough roads. The storage is underneath both so that it isn't visible and so that I have space for my dog to sleep.
Nice setup! Consider using plastic crates; they work great for me: photos.app.goo.gl/u5BQpXZaaqL1ZA8h7
Bravo. Less is more
Nice build! The platform in the back hatch that the drawers sit on, is the platform mounted? If not, any issue of it moving? How about when you pull out the drawer?
It is not bolted or mounted in any way at this point, but the portion of the platform that receives the drawer is screwed to the base pieces. Currently I have my full size spare strapped down on the back half of the platform, so no issues with movement so far. I will be rigging up a tie-down system of some sort when I move my full spare to the roof.
Great platform build!
Great ideas. Simple and functional. Well done.
What boots are those? I've been looking for something similar. Thank you!
Red Wing Blacksmiths. I've had them for a few years and worn them nearly every day ... fantastic boots.
Thank you for helping those of us that dont know the first thing about wood working but still like camping on the weekend. This is great, looking forward for more videos on this channel.
Hoping to start getting back out and filming soon!
