Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art 2024 Summer Invitational
Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art presents a full walk-through of our 2024 Summer Invitational group exhibition.
June 7th - July 27th 2024
2024 Baltimore Ave, KCMO 64108
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11-5
•••••
The annual Summer Invitational exhibition at SLCA is our opportunity to showcase new work by gallery artists and introduce artists that are new to the gallery. In addition, this year the show includes key works from our archive - an inventory of work in the flat files and painting racks.
We have new work from artists that we represent - Patty Carroll, Marcus Cain, Jane Booth, Cary Esser, Andrew Watel, Ky Anderson, Harold Smith, Michael Schultz, and Calder Kamin, and are introducing the abstract work of artist Mark Pack. From our archive we have signature examples of work by renowned artists Vincent Falsetta, Theodore Waddell, Michael Eastman, Sung Soo Koo, Michiko Itatani, Anne Currier, Barbara Rogers and others.
This video will show you images of the artwork in our Summer Invitational and, especially if you are familiar with the artist, you can imagine what the work is like. But artwork isn’t created to be known only through technology. No matter how accustomed we are to seeing artwork on our computer or phone screens, those images give just a hint of the depth of experience of seeing artwork in person. We invite you to stop by the gallery to see for yourself.

Emily Arthur: Land Lines & Water Lines Gallery Walkthrough 2024

Exhibition Statement My fine art practice is informed by a concern for the environment, displacement, exile and the return home. I seek the unbroken relationship between modern culture and ancient lands where tradition and story are used to find meaning from dislocation and separation. I work with vulnerable landscapes and waterways which support birds, plants and animals. The migratory bird im...

Exhibition Statement "On September 27, 1874, Tonkawa scouts, under the command of Colonel Ranald Slidell Mackenzie, peered into a giant crevice in the High Plains that would come to be known as Palo Duro Canyon. Below them, Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne lodges lined the canyon floor for miles; hundreds of horses grazed the curing grass." Bone of Conciliation A ceremony of healing in Comanche Co...

Exhibition Statement This current series of portraits are rooted in Ho-Chunk identity. I am extending the boundaries of photography by incorporating beadwork directly onto the photograph. The use of Ho-Chunk floral and geometric designs is a metaphor for the spirits of our ancestors who are constantly looking over us. As a child, I went with my mother to see a Sioux medicine man on the Rosebud ...

มุมมอง 1088 หลายเดือนก่อน
Beginning in 2014, Hung Liu became dedicated to working with the photography of dust bowl era photographer, Dorothea Lange. With the Dorothea Lange archive available to Hung in Oakland, near her studio, she was able to study Lange's journals, notes, and photographs and even travel to many of the places photographed by Lange. Lange became a kindred spirit and a hero to Liu. The displaced people ...

"The artworks for Horse Songs were created to honor, remember, and respect the Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne people and their horses. In 1874, the US Military leader Ranald S. Mackenzie ordered the 4th U.S. Cavalry troops to slaughter an estimated 1400 horses and mules in Tule Canyon belonging to the Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne people who had set up camp in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas. This act o...
Jane Booth: Earth Water Sky 2023 Exhibition
มุมมอง 81ปีที่แล้ว
Jane Booth's solo exhibition "Earth Water Sky" is on display. November 3, - December 23, 2023 I start each morning in the studio, sitting on a sofa looking out big glass doors to the southeast, overlooking a field of mixed grasses with a small spring fed pond in the center. The pond is a constant, but different every day. Sometimes the wind blows across, rippling the water. When it’s still, the...

Michael Schultz: Unintended Beauty Artist talk 2023, Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art
มุมมอง 102ปีที่แล้ว
This exhibition is a sample of ongoing discoveries within two separate themes. Thinking back on almost a half century of image-making there is diversity in what interests my heart and eye. The word beauty has been a central theme from the beginning. It may be an out-of-date word, but I will stick with it. Beauty elevates the soul and describes the inner state of being in a place of wonder. I ha...
John Ferry: Straight and Narrow artist talk 2023, Sherry Leedy contemporary art
มุมมอง 86ปีที่แล้ว
Straight and Narrow 9/1/2023 New Paintings by John Ferry I don’t think of my paintings as documentation, but rather an inspirational starting point for a painting. Edward Hopper said, “What I wanted to do was to paint the sunlight on the side of the house.” That quote captures my intent perfectly. I’m looking for a composition that makes me want to paint. I feel I have done that with this serie...

Patty Carroll: "She's Back" Artist talk
มุมมอง 131ปีที่แล้ว
In She’s Back, Patty Carroll’s most recent photographs in her Anonymous Women series, we find Carroll’s domestic heroine/victim, plucky and hapless as ever. With only a few bits of her visible, she succumbs time and again to her zest for décor in reimagined domestic interiors that range from the wild west to game night. She is both the victim of her obsessions as well as the invisible creator. ...

اي
John, just returned to visit Medicine Park and looked for you in Elgin. Hope you remember the house that overlooks the city where we lived and had you and your family had dinner with us.
The world needs more abstract arts like it meets more black flies.
Good one 😳👏👏🎉
