Chicago's Underground Tunnels - Chicago Pedway Tour
The Chicago Pedway is a system of tunnels that links more than 40 blocks of the downtown Chicago, covering roughly 5 miles.
Used by tens of thousands of pedestrians each day, the Pedway connects numerous train stations, office buildings, retail spaces, hotels, and public buildings. The system has continually grown since its conception in the 1950s to become an integral part of Chicago's urban infrastructure providing convenience and comfort, particularly during harsh winters and sweltering summers.
The patchwork nature of the system gives it a very unique character. Some portions are simply utilitarian hallways while others have a more creative, expressive design. While walking through the Pedway, you may encounter art exhibits, murals, pop-up shops, any number of other unexpected gems.
In this tour, I begin at the Washington Blue Line CTA station. I then cross beneath the Cook County Admin Building and the Daley Center. From there, one could walk west to reach City Hall, but I instead walk east to the Block 37 shopping mall, which is flanked by the Blue and Red Line Lake Street CTA stations on either side. Continuing east, I pass beneath a few more Loop buildings through a portion of the Pedway that includes entrances to a Macy's, an LA fitness, and the Chicago Cultural Center.
To the east of the Chicago Cultural Center is Millennium Station, a Metra Commuter Rail station located underground beneath Millennium Park. Most maps of the Pedway don't tell you this, but you can actually use the train platforms here to cross north to Michigan Plaza and the Illinois Center. I do this then turn east again to reach a few more office buildings and hotels before finally concluding the tour at the Radisson Blu.

Backrooms to backrooms, I absolutely love this!
A lovely neighbourhood.
I'm always impressed by the innovative images ^^ I really liked the atmosphere of the ceiling and glass after 16:00! It's Christmas season ^^ I was surprised at how beautiful the inside of the building was ☺❄🚶♀
It’s only the west half of the university. The East half is just as nice, maybe even nicer. DePaul is amazing! It’s like a Paris neighborhood. Many of the buildings are in the French architectural style. Very chic!
Bro have you gone into the Macy’s? I went the other day. It’s like 9 stories, there’s like an entire restaurant / food court on the 6th floor or 7th. I was amazed to find out all what was in there!
Wow! No I never have. I've gotta check that out the next time I'm over there. That sounds wild.
@@ChicagoPOV Their pot pies are famaous!
POV! Where have you been? Nice video - I love the pedway. It was always like a secret tunnel. Nice work - looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you! Appreciate the kind comment
Thank you for this wonderful tour. This was very enjoyable 👍👍
Glad to see you back! I love your cinematic style of filming. This is what makes your channel unique. This is one of my favorites places. I can tell that you know your way around a camera as well. Subbed
It's been a while since I visited Chicago, have to go back.
Larrabee and Érie strees

Chicago neighborhoods have so much untapped potential. Especially Uptown. In the context of U.S. urbanism its pretty special. You don't get this type of density and scale 4 or 5 miles from the downtowns' of cities. Then its degraded by suburban big-box stores, strip malls, surface lots and 1/2-story buildings on major arterials. City-wide it's an issue. We need to upzone for a better and more sustainable built-environment. There's far too many urban renewal scars still plaguing these wonderful places.
Nice video - do Edgewater next please
If I go walking from Field Museum to Cloud Gate (the bean) passing through this fountain, is that too much walking???, or is it reasonable??
I think that is an excellent walk! It’ll probably take you about half an hour, and you would basically walk entirely through Grant Park from the southern end to the north.
Fantastic video. From ,São Paulo, Brazil. Don´t stop.
9:59 It seems like you're also being thought of as a TH-camR while you're walking ^^, the woman in red is waving ^^ Chicago is a very beautiful city! The brick streets with lots of fallen autumn leaves are very beautiful ^^
Ooh....it is sunny
Great video. This stretch has some of the best historic architectural fabric in the city and lovely artwork. So many north side corridors have been watered down with modern soulless boxes.
Thanks! I definitely want to explore this area more.
What made you walk Pilsen? Especially 18th street? It’s other parts of Pilsen outside of 18th street. I hope to see more authentic walking videos that represent your perspective and not other channels.
Thanks for the comment! This was my first time exploring Pilsen, and people online had said 18th street would be a good place to start. I do plan to go film more walking videos in Pilsen. Where else in this neighborhood or others would you recommend I go?
What would you recommend? Pilsen isn't exactly spoiled for choice. 18th is cliche for a reason, who cares that other channels showcase it.
@ I’d recommend being more authentic as stated above. When you decide to walk only streets and neighborhoods that other TH-camrs walk, it comes off as un-authentic. It’s ok to show viewers something different.
@@Darknight-d1t I definitely do want to use my channel to show corners of Chicago that typically get less love and attention. But I also need to account for what most people are searching for on TH-cam and cater to that to a certain degree as my channel is in its infancy, and I'm trying to build an audience. I really appreciate you comment, and if there is somewhere specific you would like me to check out and record, please let me know!
@@Darknight-d1t I see what you're saying but there's also the fact that repeated exposure is how places become more popular. 18th street is far from Michigan Ave. type coverage. It's the streets like 18th, Milwaukee, Devon, Belmont, Lincoln, Argyle etc. that have people saying; "I had no idea Chicago looks like this" or "like that." Outsiders rarely see neighborhoods highlighted so they picture Chicago as skyscrapers and ghettos.
Love this place.
nice bleak sky brings out the brickwork on the buildings!
Chicago is a very beautiful city! The buildings are very pretty, and the sea is right next to it. The whole city is full of charm and it's really nice! I'm happy to see America🏙😊
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video! Thank you always, my friend!🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍
The rainbow at 1:25:50 is so beautiful!
Is this the area around the university? This is the first time I've seen this, and it's so beautiful! The university garden is so beautiful. The American scenery is so fresh and nice.
Yes! It’s DePaul’s campus. For some reason, they only showed the west half of campus. The east half is just as nicer, maybe even nicer. You’d love DePaul. It’s in one of the best neighborhoods in the United States. Very upscale. It reminds me of a Paris neighborhood.
I love this so much! Makes me miss my city 🥹
So you're also a video creator ^^ Thank you for coming to watch my Japanese video. Are you from Chicago in America? American cityscapes are so beautiful! And long walks are great. I'll come and watch your video again ^^
Чикаго гарне місто❤
"In the direction of travel, doors open on the left". The MBTA subway (Boston) the subway have announcement "Doors open on the left."
What a beautiful video! I'm always rooting for you in Korea, my friend!😍😍😍
you're a great chicago videographer, but could you possibly do some cloudy day walks? Cloudy vids really make the brickwork and textures on the buildings stand out more... reduces glair!
Thanks for the request! Honestly so far, I've mostly avoided filming on days without clear skies because my camera isn't great at handling the contrast on cloudy days. I recently got a new camera that is much better for that though, so I'm excited to film more cloudy day and evening walks! Probably won't be on the channel for another month or so though since I'm currently traveling and just have videos filmed on my old camera queued up.
Nice walk around, thanks for sharing.👍26 from a new friend
what are you using to film? the image is so clear
I used the DJI Osmo Pocket 3!
nice evening waling tour. New friend here.
Beautiful
What a great video! It's healing! I'm cheering for you in Korea!
Thank you! :)
Nice walk. What time of day is it?
This was around 7pm
Just absolutely beautiful🎉😊
You and Gemini must not be from Chicago because you guys film the same areas. Venture out. Don’t be scared! Lol
Any recommendations or requests? :)
