Chris Dreier Making Comics
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 มิ.ย. 2013
I make comics with Clip Studio Paint.
I worked as a traditional inker for over twenty-five years with companies like Dark Horse Comics, Now Comics, Antarctic Press, Chaos Comics, and Joe Book. I moved to digital around 2012-13. Currently, I'm the creator, writer, and inker for my ongoing comic book series Freaks & Gods. I successfully funded Tales of the Dark Tunnel (Freaks & Gods spin-off) with Kickstarter.

Awesome inking work, man!
Thanks!
I had my Manga Studio EX4 for the longest time simply because I loved using this pen! Thank you for helping me adjust it for Clip Studio! Would this process work the same for Photoshop, if you don't mind me asking?
Glad I could help! Of course, you can ask. I don't think Photoshop has the same brush settings as Clip Studio Paint. I mean, it does have pressure sensitivity but the similarities stop there.
Do you use the tapered function on the real g-pen?
The Real G-Pen is set to pressure sensitivity. If you mean how it "snaps" to a point after each stroke, that is set in the "starting and ending" under the "Sub Tool Details". Check out this video where I go into detail on that setting: th-cam.com/video/j_pcUErRWSk/w-d-xo.html Thanks!
I'm heavy handed and I thought I needed to go to the heavier side for my tablet, but it never felt right. I finally went to other direction and it felt way better. Now I just got to figure out the right brush size.
Sometimes it takes trial and error. I think a brush size of 10-17 works. But it also might depend on the size of the page you're using.
Nice! Is that photoshop?
Thanks. It's Clip Studio Paint. 🙂
I didn’t know this. Thank you, sir.
You're welcome.
Awesome!! You should do more Chris Malgrain art!
Thanks! Chris did some alternate covers for my comic series Freaks & Gods! I love his style. He gave me permission to snag some images from his online album. I do have about 5-6 other pieces I'd like to ink lined up. In the meantime, I did ink this from Chris: th-cam.com/video/yZGxoDalAgI/w-d-xo.html
Awesome sensei this is what i neded to pop out my characters
I'm so glad it helped! Thanks!
Need a vid with details on the brush settings and the way you select and add textures to that selection. Awesome work brotha!!
Thanks for the good idea. I'll see what I can do. Quick question though, when you say "add textures" do you mean tone or how I texture while inking?
@@chrisdreiermakingcomics I will be greedy and say both...lol I use CSP and I love learning all the tricks other artists use.
I like your honesty. LOL Thanks!
what's the name of the brush? is it free?
It's called Custom Hair Feathering Brush and it's available at my Gumroad store. chrisdreier.gumroad.com/l/towjno
This is cool
Thanks!
It's funny 'cause I just inked and posted that on my Facebook page! Good job, man!
Awesome! I have a video coming out next week where I ink the rest of this page!
I've seen this pencil art before, but never connected it with Lovecraft: Good call! And sweet inks, as well!
Thanks! What's strange, is I've never seen this art before. It struck me! The moment I saw the four tentacles coming from the hood I thought of Cthulhu!
Another fellow Clip Studio Paint inker! I have Sub'd, sir!
😀 Thanks for the sub!
Fantastic work as always sir, first time I tried inking flames the rendering was quite clunky (gradually finding ease with myself on that😅). Any tips on how to approach flames?, thanks
Thanks! When I ink flames I try to be as loose as I can, I even hold my stylus lightly. The line weight is usually quite light and I vary the line weights only slightly to (hopefully) create shape. With fire, I'm not really concerned with weight or shadows. Basically, keep the lines flowing and don't think too much. I hope that helps. Let me know. 😀
@@chrisdreiermakingcomics sure did help my thinking process, thanks👌
You're welcome!
What is the difference between pen and brush in csp? thanks
From what I've noticed there really is no functional difference. It all comes down to the settings for each. I have many tools called "brush" because I adjusted the settings to act more like a traditional brush (like I used back when I inked on paper). I created (or adjusted) my tools to fit the feel of tools I used as a traditional inker. That's how I see them, brush, nib, marker... I think Clip Studio Paint puts anything that makes a "smooth" line in a pen category. If that helps.
Nice work!
Thanks!
Love it, I really like this effect! Might give it a go my self!
You should! Thanks much!
This is beautiful to see! Thanks.
Thanks!
Can this settings can be good for manga too?
Manga has a different size than what I show. But everything I talk about in this video will work for a manga page but you'd need to change the canvas size, that's all. Maybe A4 or A5. Thanks!
I'm always needing to improve my linework.
I think that's true for everyone. We can all learn something new and push ourselves to get better.
Neat I love it good job
Thanks!
Nice
Thanks
Are you drawing on a screen or on a drawing pad? I tried to draw on a wacom pad and found very hard as cant rotate the image. Wonder drawing on a screen makes it more easier.
Yes, I use a Wacom tablet with no display. I started using a Wacom tablet in the early 2000s so I'm very used to it. But it really depends on what you're comfortable with -- with or without a display is up to you. In Clip Studio Paint you can rotate the canvas with "R" but that means switching back and forth between tools. However, an earier way is to hold down space bar & shift together and you can rotate. Once you release you are right back to the brush or pen you were using. And to return to the original positions double tap while holding space bar & shift together. I hope this helps!
Inking skills are amazing bro. Can you do a tutorial on how to do your bush styles and shortcuts with clip art studio?
Thanks! I have many videos here on YT that talk about brush settings and shortcuts. Here's one I did a few weeks back that talks about the basics including some short cuts. th-cam.com/video/OWnkEyeVUFk/w-d-xo.html

Sei que precisa de muitos "pincéis gastos" para chegar nesta qualidade. Mas acompanhando seus trabalhos já melhorei bastante. Parabéns!
Thanks! Yes, it does take a lot of practice!
Good video even tho try as I can I cannot get rid of the pixelation on my ink brushes or get the weight of the line as you darn good inking you have Mr Dreier
The first thing I would check is the page size. Is it 72, 144, 300, 600 dpi? The higher the better quality. I also change my ink layer settings to "Monochrome". When you zoom in while working the lines can get blurry, fuzzy. It's the program keeping the display (what you're looking at) low so it can make working easier. Try inking a piece and then exporting it with different size and resolution settings, just to see the difference. I hope this helps. And thanks for your kind words!
This technique completely changes the game, I've already tested it and the results are excellent. Thanks for this golden tip!
Any time! Thanks for watching!
Great! How do I configure this G-pen Feathering brush?
Thanks. There are a few steps, too many to explain in a comment but I have a video that shows how. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/j_pcUErRWSk/w-d-xo.html
You make it look easy
Thanks! It's a lot of practice!
good, you're tallented about it👍
Thank you so much 😀
thank you for giving us about how to make digital comic with clip studio paint new supporter
You're welcome!
thank you so much for this chris. I just started startedout with sequential art with characters doing casic stuff recently. On e think I`d like to ask is if there is any special setting you use for basic feeathering?
You're welcome! As for the feathering. It comes down to your tablet's pressure sensitivity settings and the settings of the brushes you use. To be honest, if you leave everything at default they work great to start out. I have a video that explains how to create a "feathering" brush. You can check it out here if you'd like: th-cam.com/video/j_pcUErRWSk/w-d-xo.html Thanks!
I made the jump to Clip Studio last month, primarily to see how it compared to those graphics programs I've been using these past 20 years - Photoshop, XaraX (vector), and Corel. In broad generalization there's really not much difference between any of these, but focusing on more specific aspects I have found Clip to be superior to all of the previously mentioned programs as regards how well it handles the aspects of drawing, inking, coloring and lettering. As you've mentioned there are a lot of bells and whistles that aren't necessary and can be intimidating when you first dive in, having spent 40+ years drawing comics despite having every type of pencil imaginable at ones fingertips - along with all manner of inking implements - I've really only used one type of pencil and 3 types of inking tools. It boils down to what works best for each individual artist. I think what has impressed me the most about Clip Studio was how easy it was to integrate my personal methodology/workflow/process within the functions this app provides - day one I was able to work the way I have for decades within its parameters the only difference being I was using much less materials and thereby saving myself money (sorry/ not sorry art supply stores that charge far too much because we are "artists"!) Yes, Chris; I have and am enjoying your vids so keep it up, I tend to learn better by doing but your videos are helpful if I run into a block that requires more clarification from someone more experienced with Clip than I and so far yours have been far more helpful than any of the tutes provided by the developer (sorry Clip!)
Is it better than Ibispaint[X]?
I can't say. I've never used Ibispaint. Sorry.
How do I set up the turnip pen to 'father' like that, and how to I make the brush look thicker on the right rise on the pen tool display?
There are too many steps to explain here but I made a follow-up video to this that explains everything. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/j_pcUErRWSk/w-d-xo.html
thank you so much
You're welcome!
Hey again Chris, one more question: What if I "bleed" just a little from the safe area into the trim area? Would that be a problem?
That shouldn't be a problem. However, keep in mind that if something is just touching the trim when printed and trimmed it will run right up to the edge of the page. That might look strange or even like a mistake. Like a panel or a character's foot. I hope that makes sense. :)
what drawing tablet do you use?
Thanks for the question! I have a Wacom Intuos Pro size medium.
Hey Chris, I have a question: There is multiple areas (boxes) (Possibly safe area, trim line and full bleed) my question is how far do you draw? Within the first area (Safe area) or second area (Trim)?
Thanks for the question! Anything important, ie all action, characters, dialogue & caption should stay within the "Live Area" or "safe area". Basically, all panels and whatnot. If you want your drawing to go off the page after it's printed (or bleed) draw past the trim line. The trim line shows where the book will be cut to the final dimensions. You don't want to place your panels or action too far to any side or top and bottom for fear that it would be trimmed or lost on the fold. I hope that this helps! Let me know.
@@chrisdreiermakingcomics Thanx! Much appreciated!!
