If you want to see something go on the back roads between chimney rock and Cherokee

WNC is Miata/Lotus/Bike territory. So is most of east Tennessee. I'm sure there are other areas in the US, but OUR particular area seems particularly performance driving/riding orientated in an intense fashion. Roads aren't always fantastic (as in paved smooth, they have wear), and they aren't for idiot drivers/riders. If you can't drive/ride I pity you, lol. Another thing. If you drive really "spirited" you will wear and break your shit pretty quick, much more so than in other US places. I've always wanted to drive the Nürburgring, then one day it dawned upon me that I had a fair equivalent just a few miles from my house. Several homemade crosses erected for those that "pushed it" and all.

Born and raised Floridian here and trying to plan a trip to see snow for the first time. I don’t have 4 wheel or all wheel drive, should I be concerned about driving this area next month(February 2023)?

    • @travelingartdrives3789

Hello Joyce, you don't need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to go to the mountains when it snows. They do a pretty good job of cleaning the roads. Just make sure you have good tread on your tires. Hope you enjoy your trip !!!

I've been there a few times...all the way thru the park from Townsend...a heluva drive...wonderful, but the downside of the mtns can burn your brakes if you aren't careful...I've seen wolves come up to the side of the road where there were trashcans at night

Some of my native ancestors came from western NC and migrated to Ky in the early 1800’s. Some settled in the Cumberland Plateaus. It’s beautiful country and well worth this scenic drive from the Natural Bridge State Park in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Eastern Ky to western NC. The Appalachia people have 3 races, one shared culture of decent mountain people.

I don't know which way is more fun, going up or down! Lots of fun in a Subaru Outback with stick shift. Used to drive this a couple times a month until covid. Thanks. FYI: Watch out for slick leaves in the fall...

Use to take our kids to Cherokee camping all the time at HAPPY HOLIDAY CAMPGROUND. It was a beautiful place. We loved it so much there. We even took our grandchildren there camping later on. Been to Maggie's Valley this route many times. Even took our kids to Ghost Town. The youngest freaked out on the chair lift. Took grandchildren to Santa Land a couple times. Good times, Greet memories.

Been years since I've seen these places. Passed right by where I got married. Nothing but bitter sweet memories there, almost gives me chills. Best thing around that county is the beautiful mountain scenery and fresh air, Other than that nothin but BS for miles and miles.

Soco Road route. Have friends and family in Cherokee. I lived in Maggie Valley for 13 years. Rode just about every backroad in the area on my motorcycle. Beautiful country. The bluegrass festival each year at Holiday Campground (Cherokee) was always a treat. As well as Larry's Jazz Festival at Saratoga's Cafe in Maggie Valley every year. Can't forget the yearly Ramp Festival and Folkmoot Festival in Waynesville either!

Man I come up to maggie valley frequently and well, stumbled upon a gravel road off the blue ridge parkway took me into maggie valley so I started looking for more roads like that, ended up going on Mt noble on another gravel road no traffic what so ever. But I need to find more true backroads like that

Traveled this road up the mountains many times and it never gets old. Once while going up the mountain from Cherokee with a group of Harleys, I was the tail gunner and a car tried to keep up with us. Right after the 3 lane stretch where you can pass, he hit the guard rail

At 2:15 you see Granny’s. Years before the casino Cherokee literally closed up in winter. Driving my Jeep from Boone to Georgia, I stopped in on what ended up being their last day before closing up. The staff kept trying to give away food because they were emptying the freezer. Not only did I get too much food but also a big to go plate at no charge.
