In-depth Guide to Ripping Perfect FLAC files from CD - Exact Audio Copy (EAC) V1.6 (100% Logs)
มุมมอง 96K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This guide covers how to rip perfect .flac tracks from your CDs as well as a working CUE sheet, a m3u file for the album and a .log file that will score 100%. Perfect does not equate to speed. if you want to save on time swap to "Burst Mode" instead of "Secure Mode" and "Copy Selected Tracks" instead of "Test & Copy Selected Tracks", this rips 6 times faster at the cost of error correction and ...
Can one say what is (2^24)/(2^16)=2^8=256 ? If not , then this is the comparison of 24 bit recording with 16 bit recording.
I have downloaded version 1.8. I am using an external drive and it doesn’t automatically recognize my drive in the top left corner. How do I fix this?
Either you are using a hub/intermediary device that you connect your drive into that then connects into your PC which is causing issues - solution for that would be to connect the usb directly instead, or you're using remote desktop possibly? If you're using RDP you need to make changes to your group policy to allow access to your cd drive while being connected remotely. It could also be possible that your external drive has a physical on button that you need to press for it to be recognized? You might also have ''autoplay' settings set to autoplay CDs that you have turned on in some program that causes EAC to be unable to see the drive itself. As a last ditch effort you could try plugging the drive into other usb ports and also try putting the disc into drive before opening EAC but besides that, not really sure.
Thanks I figured it out, I had to reboot the computer after I configured all my settings.
@@sharky1112it is taking me about 2 minutes to rip one track to a .flac file. Is this normal speed?
@@OctobersCat56 Yes. If you want to reduce how long it takes by about 6x you'll need to give up error correction & checking. You can go to drive options -> extraction method and enable 'burst mode' and you can use "action -> copy selected tracks" as opposed to test & copy. This will save considerable amounts of time at the cost of no error correction or ability to check whether errors took place.
@@sharky1112 thank you!
Excellent tutorial!! Thanks! Please, in order to also get the mp3 (320) rip, what do I need to change on the set up? I still love to use my iPod Classic... Can I keep the same setup for both? Flac and 320? Thank you!
At the bottom of EAC there exists a Profile button which allows you to save all of your settings to a specificly named profile. Do this for your existing FLAC setup then go into Compression Options -> External Compresion, change this page to use the LAME MP3 encoder, change the path to wherever you have mp3.exe installed, then within the additional command line params you'll want to change it to "-b 320 -h --add-id3v2 --ignore-tag-errors --ta "%artist%" --tt "%title%" --tg "%genre%" --tl "%albumtitle%" --ty "%year%" --tn "%tracknr%" %source% %dest%" without quotations You don't need the added protection when ripping to MP3 so I would suggest just choosing Copy Selected Tracks -> Compressed and also going into your Drive Options -> extraction method and enabling "burst mode" as opposed to secure mode. This will speed the process up significantly. The alternative is to instead convert your existing FLAC files to MP3. This can be done with most music players so you could simply google for 'converting flac to mp3 using NAME OF MY MUSIC PLAYER'

What's the reason for disabling ID3 tags?
@@electroman1996 FLAC has its own native tagging container. ID3 tags would be useful for formats that dont support tagging natively like wav, tta, mp3
@sharky1112 Oh ok, I wasn't aware of that. I used it like this in the past and it still seems to have worked fine Thanks for the reply!
17:04 CTDB lookup has stopped working for me. Any idea why? I have used EAC for about a year, and this had never happened.
What happens when you use the manual option to lookup metadata? (theres an icon with two cds and an orange plus button found in the top left which does this) If you're able to manually look things up then you mightve disabled it by accident, go to EAC Options -> General -> enable "on unknown cds automatically access online metadata database" If you're not able to look things up manually you might have a firewall preventing you from accessing ctdb or, the PC you're using no longer has internet access and you didnt notice since you only use it for ripping or something
@sharky1112 PC has internet. Same thing happens after disabling firewall. The CTDB lookup pops up automatically, but quickly closes and does nothing. When I go to the Cuetools download page, I get an error. Could it be that their servers are down? Any way I can be sure of their website status?
@@henryjimenez3227 What you're describing usually happens when ctdb finds only one result, since there's only the one result it closes the selection screen and tags the files with that result. Is that whats happening? Their website and server are still up right now as well.
@sharky1112 It started working again. No clue what happened. Might have been the servers. I appreciate the help.
Please explain how you get those special character replacements I don't understand how you type them in on the keyboard
If you insist on typing them on a keyboard instead of copy and pasting them from the description of the video you can use alt codes, pressing alt + 63 will give you the full width ?for example. You can find a list of these alt codes here: www.alt-codes.net/
@sharky1112 yes that was my bad I didn't realise that they can be copy and pasted from the file in your description so thank you however I do have one further problem that I would love you to help me with and that is I am inserting a CD it's coming back saying it is compatible with accurate rip but it is then ejecting the CD and I'm getting an error message saying cannot find valid read command on your drive I have tried manually setting all of those options but none of them seem to work and I wondered what I'm doing wrong
I am using eac 1.8 and used your guide to set it up, Iam getting a error code when eac compresses to flac. "at compression.5508->assign range" when i click close on error message eac closes, but the file is saved to flac. Any Ideas? Thank you
Are you trying to rip a virtual CD? If so, that would be why, in part because there's issues ripping virtual CDs past a certain length. If not, maybe you're ripping on a network mounted drive? If so, that would also be why and you'd need to use local storage. If it's neither of those, you could try enabling "On extraction start external compressors queued in the background" and/or disabling "do not open external compression window"
@@sharky1112 No virtual cd and no networking, I will try your last suggestion, but if you have any other ideas I am open to them Thank you for replying
is there a difference from 1.6 to 1.8?
spoon (creator of EAC) removed gnudb/freedb support, so it's actually better to stay on 1.6 if you're utilizing either one. Otherwise, there's no difference. If you're unfamiliar with what those are, they are just metadata providers. They were removed in 1.7 which ended up being a buggy mess so they released 1.8 to fix the bugs introduced, that's about it.
@@sharky1112 ok thank you! I am keeping 1.8 but im redoing the settings you have and the character replacements wont accept
@@IamMeIam other people on 1.8 have been able to use those character replzcements, im guesting it had something to do with there being an unwanted space before or after the character
Thank you for this tutorial, it's really over the direct and useful. Quality over the top.
I have always used EAC. These days I usually just buy albums off of Qobuz and burn my own discs. But sometimes I like the older discs and rip them from the library. I think EAC produces more accurate results than other tools because of the way it rips (in blocks) vs doing a burst pass and comparing it against the AR database or comparing 2 burst passes' checksum.

amazing guide. thanks so much. for some reason, i needed 3 CDs to get AccurateRip to configure properly. thank God i already had a decent CD collection to get that working.
lol its rare for the first song to turn red for the hidden track . My very first test CD i used to follow along with this guide had the first song red. Flyleaf - Memento Mori.
Great guide. I don't know how to fix my issue, since transitioning to Windows 11, the same drive I used to get 100% logs with no longer wants to work with AccurateRip or accept key discs. Even when manually entering the offset, it won't rip any discs without immediately going into sync error. Tried reinstalling and reverting to EAC 1.3, no dice. If you have any insight it would really help
What you described doesn't happen due to upgrading from win10 to win11, nor would it happen from some specific setting being enabled. That said, you could try disabling "read into lead in/lead out" (idk what the setting is actually called) in your drive settings, when this setting doesn't work on your drive it causes suspicious positions on the final track of every rip - so really not what you're facing but then again it cant hurt to try. Additionally, you can play around wth the gap detection methods changing them from A to B to C or Secure to Accurate etc, besides that I really don't have any suggestions for you since I have never heard of this happening.
Thanks for the great video. Mine does not come up with any album artwork on the bottom of the Metadata Lookup popup (this popup loads for a really long time), nor does it show anything on the right on the main screen. I tried a few CD's. My CUETools Options screen has more options than yours I guess cause they have updated it, but the options are similar. Any advice? Edit: I switched the provider to MusicBrainz, will that cause any issues?
Metadata doesn't effect rip quality so it would be fine to use musicbrainz as the default option.
Great video and SUPER EASY to follow, thank you! Ripped CD's and it says I can't get cover art and I have to enable Amazon Web Services. Is there another way to get the art?
Probably not, but you can usually google the artist - title in quotation marks so "Example Artist - Example Title" followed by deezer.com or spotify.com or music.amazon.com or music.apple.com within google images. This should bring up a reasonably sized digital cover art. If your release isn't on a single streaming site, you could try to find it on musicbrainz or discogs which is what XLD is doing anyways. Main thing is that when you find the artwork just drag it into the folder you're ripping to/ripped to and name it cover.*format. I prefer manually obtaining cover art due to the lacking quality on most of the images pulled by databases tbh.

Is it normal for a rip disk to take 1 to 2 hours? I thought this process would be faster 🥺
Unfortunately, yes. If you go into drive options -> drive, then enable "spin up drive before extraction" it may speed things up as many drives cannot reach their full potential without it. Secure mode reads each sector at minimum twice (in other words rips the CD twice) and more times if it encounters data it can't read. Test & Copy creates a test rip, calculates the CRC32 value of the wav files, deletes the files then creates a second copy - the copy you end up with after the rip and does the same again. The above two settings are essentially making you rip your CD at least 4 times, if not more. You have ways to speed the process up at risk of errors, if you just want a listenable copy and don't intend to share them anywhere you could change to "burst mode" and only use "copy rip" instead of "test & copy selected tracks" but you may encounter audible errors if the CD is damaged or just can't be read on first passthrough. I will note that if you have a significant amount of CDs to rip, like hundreds - and you need 100% logs so test & copy and secure mode are required for you and you have an external cd drive - I would consider using a virtual machine to run macos 10.13, installing XLD and using XLD to rip your CDs instead. XLD is on average 52% faster than EAC from some tests I ran and had others help with. EAC sucks ass ;-;
why does all software have to be so over complicated these days, all I want to do is put a CD in and rip it with artwork and titles, is this too much to ask?
Most ripping software can do this and always has been able to do this. You chose a video for creating 100% logs and ripping perfect flac copies it's overly complicated for that reason alone.
Do you do anything about the weird hyphens and apostrophes? like replacing ’ by ' or - by - They bother me but I think i'm just exagerating. Everytime I rip a batch of CDs I always find a detail to freak out about and have to redo it all over again.
Uh, you dont have to re-do anything though? You can always tag your rip after the rip is done. Manually tagging your files post-rip doesn't affect the quality of the files and it means nothing if the filenames/metadata doesn't match the .log file. The .log file has the CRC32 value of each track which is impossible to change without modifying the raw waveform of the audio file itself so tagging can change and it will still match,.
@@sharky1112 Thanks for the reply! I'm curious to know if you personally, you replace those characters in the filenames or in the metadata or both, or if you just let them be.
@@NullVoid95 I only replace invalid characters that windows can't handle with full width replacements. The rest, I generally tag releases exactly how they appear on the release site/booklet with stylization so I don't have to go back and fix these things since I manually entered the one I wanted when tagging.

This is great, thank you. One question, while I don’t wish to share, I have ripped all my cds to a Brennan. Unfortunately some rips need replacing. So, with a successful rip from XLD, do I just copy the album folder to the Brennan?
If you are able to return that and get a full refund you should. CD drives should only cost you $15 new, $1 used. The OEM drive inside of that snakeoil monstrocity is likely worth in the ballpark of $15. Does it display as "The Brennen" as your CD drive? or does XLD output another name? If it outputs a different name, google it and you'll see how much it is. As for how to handle rips done w the drive and where to put them I'm not sure, but there should be no issue with moving it to your drive afterwards.
@@sharky1112 I don’t use the drive in “that snake oil monstrosity, I use an external drive plugged into it by Rioddas. I’ve always had cds that don’t play “right” including high end players in the past. The AccurateRip attracted me. Unfortunately after loading XLD I shut it down to load the log file and it wouldn’t open again so I’m going to have to start again. Thanks for your reply.
Best guide in internet, thank you.
how do I get a cover.jpg file in the output folder? My version of xld doesn't do that
If the metadata provider doesn't provide a cover art, or cover art isn't one of the things you are pulling from the metadata provider you would have to manually insert a cover.jpg into the folder at some point during or after the ripping process. Googling "artist - title" site:deezer.com or site:spotify.com or apple.com, music.amazon.com/ will narrow down your search to a reasonably sized cover art from one of the popular streaming sites. Usually the digital art is better than w/e the metadata provider provides because there are rules on them which state you need to submit a scan/image of the cover art to the database.
Thank you. It does retrieve a cover image, it shows above the tracklist, but it just does writes it as a jpg in the folder.
@sharky1112 Why is it that during the uncompress or compress process, only wav files appear in the folder, but no Flac files? Please, thank you
The files are extracted in .wav and then later compressed as a final step when choosing "Test & Copy -> Selected Tracks -> Compressed" If that isn't happening and you're not seeing a "file creation error" appearing, then it's due to your "Compression settings" within the "External Compressor" tab being incorrect. Most commonly, this is due to the path to *.flac.exe being incorrect.
@@sharky1112 thank you broo,,, is done 👍
Novice Here. Great Tutorial - Thank You. I have EAC software installed (I really like it) and can Rip/Burn without problems. However my question is: Can I Rip WAV files for a CD and save these to a memory stick so they can be played as a whole album (with gaps) on an external device..........or do I need another program for this? Many Thanks In Advance.
You'd select actions -> test & copy selected range -> uncompressed There's probably no point in using test & copy for this, so if you want it to go 2x faster just select "copy selected range" then pick uncompressed. Be aware WAV files don't retain tags the same way FLAC files do. External devices should be able to FLAC files and most hardware you'd be playing it on does to. So, unless yours can't I would stick with FLAC.
In the "Character Replacements" setup, I'd tell viewers to look at you written guide for characters to paste into this dialog.
Sure, but I can't make such a change to an existing video :P
@@sharky1112 Actually I noticed later that you have the special characters in the notes after your video. By the way, how do you know that Paranoid and Burst modes don't result in a perfect bit-for-bit copy?
@@ajlenze8 Paranoid mode is ancient. It does half of what 'secure mode' does (re-reads each sector twice) but, in very small blocks causing significant stress on your drive. The creator of EAC hasn't suggested using the setting since at least 2007. (Note that paranoid mode is the same as burst mode with no error correction so the same argument can apply there) www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/index.php/2007/03/15/what-is-paranoid-mode-and-why-is-it-not-recommended/ Burst mode does not have "error correction" which means that it will skip over any piece of data you can't read on your first attempt. This sounds fine because as long as the CD is brand new it should be fine, right? The problem is that optical drives have very little (if any) error correction/handling on their own. It's common for drives not to be able to read brand new discs with 100% accuracy. Generally, even on the most prestine CDs you'll notice your "Track Quality: %" will be lower than 100%. This means that error correction was applied to the rip. The lower the % the more correction was applied. In practice, when you use burst mode you are likely to encounter data that your drive can't read in one go. You will skip over said data and it will result in no longer being bit perfect but also may contain audible errors (pop/skip/clicks/static)
@@sharky1112 It sounds like you're saying that all modes COULD create an exact copy, but Secure mode has the best chance to do so, especially if there are some errors. If you had said that, I would have totally agreed, but I've seen Paranoid mode result in the same checksums as Secure mode, which means that both are reading the data the same.
@@ajlenze8 If you feel more comfortable using a setting the owner of the program advises against using and toutes as being worse than Secure Mode, by all means you should do it. While all modes can achieve a perfect copy in an ideal scenario, you are very unlikely to do so and it would be ill advised to tell people they should use a mode that takes even longer than secure mode while ruining their drive (without error correction mind you) because there is a chance it can perform correctly. Since over 70% of consumer drives (per Spoon's accuraterip results) have an accuracy of 95% or lower - the statistical likelyhood of you performing a perfect rip with any other mode is not sufficient to recommend it.
Thanks man! Great tutorial 🙌
Without a doubt this is the best tutorial I've ever watched on TH-cam. Thanks a lot man!
How would I know what directory to store something I haven't even see before. Save WHAT? Save it to Where, a FOLDER? I put stuff in folders but that is NOT a directory. I don't even know what this means.
Thanks man! This is a great guide! I wanted to note that I can't get Asian text to write onto the cuesheet following your steps. No matter what there's no option for the cuesheet to encode in UTF-8 or UTF-16 as it will always encode the sheet in ANSII. Any other work around like exporting to CDPlayer.ini is useless as I want the metadata to be transferred from EAC to each individual tracks. Now I have to create my own cuesheet in UTF-16, transfer the metadata from the ANSI to it then manually input the tags myself which is what I did not want sigh.. Is there a way to just encode the entire CD as one single .wav or .flac file with a cuesheet? I haven't figured it out. I did it long ago I believe but it's been years.
In order to get cuesheets to output in another encoding you'll need to change your locale. Being on any of the english locales will output ANSI so, change to japanese and you'll get shift-jis encoded cues instead which handles unicode characters. Keep in mind that EAC preserves the encoding of metadata submitted to the metadata provider so once and a while you'll import metadata and the cuesheet will output in some non-shift-jis format. As far as sharing these rips goes - the majority of peoples cuesheets are completely broken for unicode characters/non-latin characters and there's really no problem. The cuesheet is already "broken" when created because you're converting your files to FLAC. It only functions when the files are .wav so - people really don't look at the tags within the cuesheet, the only concern is that it retains the gaps if ever someone really wants to burn the files back to CD. When burning back to CD you'd modify the tags within the cuesheet yourself to your liking. This is to say, you can safely ignore your cuesheets tags when ripping if you're not personally burning the files back to CD. As for how to rip a single file, you choose range rip. Actions -> Copy selected range (iirc, don't have the program open rn to confirm) If you're going to rip it ""incorrectly""" per private tracker standards you may as well also not use "Test & Copy" as that will slow down the rip by 2x and, possibly change your rip settings from "Secure Mode" to "Burst Mode" to reduce your time ripping by another 2x.
A really great tutorial that's easy to follow and understand! Thank you for you work
How do I find the offset value of my drive? It is listed as purged on the data base. I'm using this drive: ASUS SBC-06D2X-U
Hey, input the offset +667 then rip a CD. Once done, look in your .log file for the "List of alternative offset correction values" section. Pay attention to the "absolute" and "relative" columns. If it says an Absolute of "6" and a relative of "-661" with a fairly high confidence value then there is a good chance your real offset is +6, likewise if these values are different and add up to a different number it would be that offset instead. If the confidence level is very low or non-existant then there's a good chance it's +667. You can rip several CDs to be sure that you've set it correctly, 3 is probably a good number.
@@sharky1112 Thanks. I tried this, but there is no "list of alternative offset correction values" section to be found in my .log file
It says there were no errors, but when I set it to +667, it said each track was ripped with a confidence of 1/3, as opposed to when I did with the offset value at 0, which gave me anywhere from 3/3 to 18/18, but always a full value. Not sure if that's relavant.
@@blindbluesandjazz That'd mean either either the release is not that popular and therefor can't populate data it doesnt have, or it would mean that +667 is your actual offset. Would have to rip more CDs to be sure.
@@blindbluesandjazz So, accuraterip is actually not that accurate despite its name. You will only match with other entries in the accuraterip database if your offset value matches the submissions. This means that if your offset value is something very common like +6 it will be higher than if is a non-standard offset. The amount of people who do not configure their offset value is probably pretty high and therefor it remains 0, this would end up giving you more results with an offset of 0 than an offset of +667.
The other thing about logs and cue sheets is that they can be used by databases such as MusicBrainz to determine accurate Disc ID's, and even assign ISRC's to tracks on a CD and thus be able to link the same recordings (typically songs) across different albums. In general their information is good to have for any sort of database editing, on different fronts. Submitting the log also allows for AcoustID retrieval.
Very late reply but does the version of flac.exe make any difference? Like, if it's really old vs a new version?
The newer the version the better the compression. It wouldnt change much else, though - some very old versions have issues converting wav to flac and cause the files to corrupt. Its a pretty niche issue, but if youre experiencing incomplete tracks that stop abruptly or tracks that wont play or your files not converting from wav to flac that would be why.
@@sharky1112 Right, thanks for the quick response. Gonna have to set it up again but I have my flac profile, at least. Pretty sure the offset on my DVD-RW is +6 too but may aswell check with a disc.
Excellent job. I greatly appreciate your effort to educate the community. Now, I would like to figure out how to make CD from my saved files.
Thank you for an awesome instructional vid! I have an issue though. I want to rip a live CD into one file which displays each track name as it plays. Is this possible? Thank you!
Depends, you are able to perform a range rip which will rip the entire CD into a single file. The accompanying cuesheet you create will then split the files into individual tracks within your music player. Whatever you're using needs to support the use of cuesheets and, given you are essentially just splitting the range rip into individual tracks within the music player it would be the same thing as just ripping individual tracks imo. To do a range rip, Action -> copy range then, for the cue Action -> create cue sheet -> pick the one relating to range rips, i forget what its called.
Considering the lack of .FLAC support by Apple, this is a must. Great and clear video; I installed XLD in one go!
Its a damn shame you have so few subs. A good quality voiceover, and a full guide to get up and running, for most. Found this video looking for how to use this program, as I had no clue how to start the process yet alone get my disc to show up, and solved every problem I had and got it set up in a way that is performing perfectly. I had used a trial version of db something, which produced only corrupted tracks that no program could recognize, and feared I would spend considerable time finding a replacement that at least got that far. I already have a great DVD ripper that let me put my collection on my media server, but bought my first CD a bit ago and it wasn't able to rip CDs. Looking to get all the songs I tend to listen to on TH-cam, as it is ad free music I will own and could listen to anywhere.
dBpoweramp is probably fine, it might just be the flac binary it ships with, or that you already had that is causing the corrupt tracks. There is known issues with some earlier versions of FLAC that can cause tracks to be corrupt. If you attempt to rip uncompressed wav files instead, they'd probably be fine. This issue also affects EAC tbh, and any other ripping software, since it is the conversion from wav to flac that is causing it. Not worried about subs lol, I just made this for my friends ^^
