My name is Molly and I am the owner/operator of Mountain Momma's Handmade channel.
Born and raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest I love animals, the outdoors, crafting, gardening, the ocean and most of all the Oregon Ducks. Fall Saturdays you will find me in the electric Autzen Stadium with my dad or in front of the TV rooting for my team. I am a boy mom of 2 humans plus a German Shepherd, a Belgian Malinois, and 4 cats.
Five years ago I started making handmade soap as a hobby. I quickly accumulated more bars than I could ever use and began attending local farmers market. While trying to figure out how to package my soaps to protect them from the elements I discovered tie dying. I began dying bags for my soaps and found my love of tie dying. So here I am tie dying shirts, bags, blankets, and whatever else I find.

Gorgeous! Would it also work to microwave the shirt on low?? I love the idea of warming it to help set the colors.
A microwave would probably work I just have not done it that way. If you get it too hot it can effect the color. 170 is about as hot as you want to get it and stay there for 20 minutes.

How do you create the wavy spine tie?
@@LiseWolfe center the back of the shirt (or wherever you want the spine). Along the fold where you centered it draw your line length wise and then pleat along your line. It’s just like doing a spine pleat but on a fold instead. The further your line is from the fold the wider your spine will be. I’ll put it on my list to make a video too😊

What kind of marker do you use?
@@SandiBurda-w3n any washable marker. I grabbed a pack at the Dollar Tree and they work fine.

Beautiful shirt!! I think if you added that little sprinkle of soda ash over your dye before you put on your big chunk of ice it would make the colors even more vibrant. I love the video and I can't wait to see more.❤

I like the way it came out the couple times that I’ve used that out white bright. I rinse it off a bit and put it in my spin dryer that gets a lot of the stuff out or you can do the washing machine on spin cycle only. Thanks for the video.😁✌️

@@mountainmommashandmade I had a Ninja and it could only handle two shirts max I upgraded to a Black & Decker mini washing machine (I live in an apartment) and glad I did. It doesn't spin as fast as the Ninja but it washes

Love this shirt. What kind of dyes did you use? Where would I get the soda ash and what is it used for? Where would I get some? How many times did you wash it alone? My roommate and I are wanting to get started, but are spiraling like the shirt. Beautiful.
Thank you! You can get soda ash at pretty much any grocery store in the laundry isle. Walmart, Fred Meyer, etc. It causes the chemical reaction to adhere the dye to the fabric. Lots of places to buy procion dyes. Dharma, Dyespin, Grateful Dyes. Just getting started I would order my stuff from Grateful Dyes. They have affordable blanks, sinew, rubber bands, everything you need to get going. The shipping prices are better than other companies just not as many dyes that split to choose from. I post wash my items once with dawn soap by hand and then once in the machine with hot water.

Hi Greg. I have had it not work on some things. Usually stuff that is a cotton polyester blend. Also sometimes it is the kind of dye the manufacturer uses. My favorite thing to reverse is cotton gauze fabric, the black atleast. It seems to be pretty popular right now so I have been able to find several pieces to reverse. It also dyes amazing. I'll have a video coming up(when I get time to edit) using that type of fabric and reversing it. Thank you for watching!

So nice! Is it possible to use machine powder dye in place of this powder for an ice dye method like this? It's much more available where I am... not sure where to look for the proper stuff (Im in Italy!)
I am not sure what machine powder dye is so I cannot answer that. Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes is all that I know to use. The dye needs to react with natural fibers. Cotton, hemp, bamboo, ect.
