(Edits in description.) In this video I am comparing the pro's and con's of the Zpacks Duplex VS Dan Durston X-Mid Pro 2. Edited: 1) I made some errors on the footprint diagrams. For the X-Mid Pro 2 the footprint dimensions are 80" x 100",the floor is 48" instead of 52", and the Duplex is 93" long and not 90". Zpacks states 100", but I measured it with several pitches and came out 93" at 120cm ...

    You were smart to start the hike early out of Happy Isles! I was day hiking to Vernal Falls in late August last year, and what a mad house! Could you not just slip a plastic garbage bag over the foot of your sleeping bag? The condensation would then just dribble onto the floor...which is still bad but not as bad. At least you wouldn't get cold in the night from a wet sleeping bag. I always carry a cloth to sop up moisture from the tent floor in the morning anyway. Just a downside of single wall tents. I own both the Duplex and the Duplex XL. Happy with them both except in high winds. I'm thinking about asking Zpacks to custom-add a zipper to the vestibules so they can't shake open in high wind.

    You can have the X-Mid Pro and the Zpack's Duplex. I will keep and use my Original X-Mid 1 ( 1st ones available on Drop ). I found there are more advantages to the X-mid then any others I have had in the past 60 years. Unlike other tents , The X-Mid has a four stake pitch without any guide lines unless you want them and then it's only 2 lines. With the X-mid you can disconnect the inner tent and have the outer tent as a Tarp set up with a ground cloth. It's simple and quick to set up and take down in either fashion. I would say the X-Mid 1 is a lot better tent. Just my opinion and no one else's.

      @juergenwoehl ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello David, thank you for your comment. Here seems a reliable source outlifeexpert.com/dyneema-or-nylon-tents/ They claim that "for the same weight and thickness, Dyneema is almost two times stronger (tensile strength of 63 lb/in) than its nylon counterpart". These authors further claim that "For tent groundsheets, Dyneema is preferable compared to silnylon as it is stronger and more waterproof". I am honestly not sure about the quality of a lot of the sources, and peer reviewed articles would help us a lot more.

    Having owned both myself, you hit the pros and cons pretty well. But for me two things stand out that are different. I never liked how the Duplex doors ended up on the floor to get dirty and be in the way. The XP2 doors are superior, pole not in the way, mostly one handed, and won’t snag you or your gear. I also never liked the Duplex floating floor and in fact attached mitten hooks and elastic cord to the four outside bottom corners. This became more of a problem when I started camping with the Duplex in windy areas. But I hope next time Dan will add some inside line loops for hanging things and some pockets on the vertical mesh next to that awesome vestibule storage area. Good luck on your long hikes.

      Yea I don't love the zpacks doors or the mesh screen zip and mesh. I've had many tents and hammocks and never a burn or rip in the mesh but with the duplex its very easy to get the mesh caught in the zipper if your not paying attention or trying to 1 hand things.

    Nice comparison! One thing I would really like to know is how the condensation is mitigated between both options? Does the Durston do a better job b/c of the vents, or does the zipper and lower tent awnings offset the venting capability? Thanks!

    • @juergenwoehl
      @juergenwoehl ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good question, I have used the Duplex on several PCT section hikes and only experienced 1 time slight condensation, as I always kept 1 door flap per site rolled up. That one time I had it closed to heavy rain. We would need both tents at the same time in the same conditions, which I did not do. Maybe somebody else can chip in here. In any way, I think condensation is not an issue if you have enough space to stay away from the walls

    • @isleeptillnoon5256
      @isleeptillnoon5256 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's not raining, I generally set my hiking poles taller so that there's a couple of inches gap from the bottom to let air circulate. I've also swapped out the corner pegging lines to longer ones to help give me more options on staking my tent. Mind you, I live in Australia where the temperatures are mild in comparison to some countries.

    6'5" and own both an Xmid-2 Pro and a DupleXL 0.75oz. Use both as single-person, not two-person tent. It's really not a close call. Durston only needs four-stakes 99% of the time. Duplex requires eight-stakes, but still doesn't feel sturdy with twelve. Remember, every stake requires a rock, unless the ground is perfect. And every guy-line is a trip-hazard. Durston's four corner stakes are in tight, within a few inches of the corners and have never tripped on them. Tripping is a daily occurrence with flimsy Duplex. Then there's the fly-doors. Duplex doors can't truly close. If it's windy, wind is entering Duplex. Durston is impervious to wind (zipped). (more...) Net-doors: Duplex's half-moon doors lay in the mud when open. Takes two-hands through most of the zipper-pull, which means both hands to the far left and both hands to the far right. And when doors are open, they are open all the way; welcome-in all bugs. Durston's netting is never in the dirt. Never stepped or kneeled upon. Takes only one-hand to zip and unzip (two in short rounded section). Can usually leave zippers open during evening in-and-outs (dinner prep, etc.) or midnight watering foliage, because netting hangs covering most of the entryway and slipping through is easy and natural. Poles: There's enough room to get by the Duplex poles... barely. Poles are way out of the way on Durston. Enter and exit from any angle. And no entry guy-line to get in the way either. Fiddly: Duplex is fiddly. Nothing's bolted-down and everything needs adjusting. There are too many stakes, too many guy-lines and too many constant adjustments needed. Durston is one-and-done. Head and Toe: DupleXL has short sticks to hold-up and give more room at the ends. Had difficulty keeping the end-sticks vertical in the DupleXL. When they were vertical, there was sufficient head and toe space in the middle, but not at either side of the end-stick. Wall angle is just too shallow. Durston is better for one-person, because A) there's more length along the diagonal and B) the walls rise more steeply so there's virtually no chance of touching. It would be cramped lengthwise for the 6'5" person with two people. If one really wants two-people, they should be looking at three-person tents though, shouldn't they? It's not a close call. Durston is superior in every category.

      Hello Tom, In my tests I came to different results. As other readers comment, there is no such thing as a perfect tent, all tents have advantages and disadvantages. I am happy for you if you are convinced the X-mid 2 pro is the perfect tent for you. I will follow up with testing the Zpacks XL shortly

    • @juergenwoehl
      @juergenwoehl ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Tom, great to hear that for you it is an easy decision what tent you prefer. A lot of time the importance of the criteria are different for different people. For you it is i.e. important that the guylines are short, for others the foot print is more important. I like all different perspectives and I enjoy chatting with people on hikes about their experience. Thank you for sharing your experience

    • @Suncity4
      @Suncity4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having owned both too you articulated why I sold two Duplex tents and went with the XP2 Pro. I’ll deal with the footprint, something not said in the video is that even not using the vestibules on the Duplex (for footprint) you still have to run the lines from the center poles out about the same distance to get a safe pitch. Finally, you want to minimize footprint and stakes, try the Tarptent Rainbow Li. Not one stake used while in the Grand Canyon using trekking poles on bottom ends and one rock for the back. Pitching pain should factor in almost always and the Duplex has a high pitching pain number.

    • @juergenwoehl
      @juergenwoehl ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jesse, agree that you have to run the lines. I think again it comes back to our criteria, in other words what is important. The TT Rainbow is an awesome tent too, It is just a few ounces heavier with ~ 29 oz, but no as you said can be pitched only with trekking poles. If I recall it correctly, it is 50“ wide and 88“ long, and due to its steep walls there should be no issue wit touching the walls

    • @Suncity4
      @Suncity4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juergenwoehl thanks, you’re right. I actually use a single Rainbow Li which is the same length as the DR Li but it’s only 36” wide with one door. You’d love that footprint, It comes in at 24ozs with stakes and my last camo duplex (nice and dark) with 8 stakes almost weighed that. Wouldn’t it be nice to rent these $$$ tents several days before deciding. Ps. I made an 18 inch cylinder shaped Tyvek bag cover for the end of my quilt when I used the Duplex. Helped me stop worrying about my bag getting wet on heavy condensation nights. Worked better than my rain jacket that kept falling off. Good luck on the trail.
