El Grito Mapuche
The Mapuche people, indigenous to what is now southern Chile and Argentina, have a storied history marked by their resilient resistance against various conquerors, including the Inca Empire. While the Inca Empire was one of the most powerful empires in pre-Columbian America, the Mapuche successfully resisted its expansion, setting a precedent for their future battles against other invaders.
Before the arrival of the Incas, the Mapuche people had already established a distinct culture and societal structure. The Mapuche were divided into various groups, including the Mapuche, Picunche, and Huilliche, who shared a common language, Mapudungun, but had little political or cultural unity beyond their linguistic ties.
The Inca Empire, under the rule of the Sapa Inca (the Inca emperor), began its expansion southward from modern-day Peru. By the early 16th century, the Incas had reached as far as the Maule River in Chile. However, their attempts to subdue the Mapuche were met with fierce resistance.
The Mapuche were one of the few indigenous groups in South America who successfully resisted Inca rule. Unlike other regions under Inca control, the Mapuche did not adopt the Inca system of forced labor, known as the mit'a. This resistance was facilitated by the Mapuche's decentralized societal structure, where each settlement had its own cacique (chief) whose authority did not extend beyond his own village.
The Incas were unable to fully incorporate the Mapuche territories into their empire. The southern border of the Inca Empire is believed to have been situated around the Maule River, marking the limit of Inca expansion into Mapuche lands. The Mapuche leader, Michimalonco, played a significant role in expelling the Incas from their territory, setting the stage for future resistance against other invaders.
Although the Mapuche resisted Inca rule, there was some cultural exchange, particularly in areas where the two groups interacted closely. The Mapuche were influenced by pre-Inca peoples and the Incas themselves, but they maintained their distinct cultural identity. This period of contact may have introduced the Mapuche to state-level organizations and prompted a collective awareness among them, though they did not adopt a centralized state structure.
The Mapuche's success in resisting the Incas laid a crucial foundation for their future battles. This legacy of independence and fierce defense of their territory would later be instrumental in their conflicts against the Spanish and, subsequently, the Chilean and Argentine governments.
While specific battles between the Mapuche and the Incas are not as well-documented as those against the Spanish, the resistance led by figures like Michimalonco is noteworthy. Michimalonco's expulsion of the Incas from Mapuche territory and his subsequent battles against the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia highlight the Mapuche's military prowess and strategic thinking.
The Mapuche's ability to fend off the Incas set a precedent for their continued resistance against later invaders. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the Mapuche employed similar tactics, leveraging their knowledge of the terrain and their decentralized organizational structure to great effect. Leaders such as Lautaro and Caupolicán, who had previously fought against the Incas, played pivotal roles in the Arauco War against the Spanish.
