Mixed Media Painting Demo: Lightwish Oil Pastels & Acrylic Paint
I enjoy showing you new ideas and new art products that I discover, along with how I use them in my art practice. I was recently sent this beautiful set of 48 professional quality oil pastels and a swatch book to try out in exchange for my honest review. I thought you might enjoy a demo on how I use oil pastels to create lively, colorful, mixed media artwork that looks professional and interesting. I had loads of fun using these oil pastels, and plan to make them part of my regular practice. SAVE 15% ON LIGHTWISH OIL PASTELS BY USING THE LINKS BELOW:

Love, love, love this! This is the kind of work I like to do! First of all, how do you keep your acrylic paint wet enough to scrap into? Lastly, how do these oil pastels differ from the Neocolor 11 pastels? Your work is so beautiful! Thank you. 😊
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Firstly, the paint was only tacky, not completely dry, so I could scrape it off with the back of my paintbrush. Then when it was dry, you can see I had to switch to a palette knife (because it is more rigid). Second, Neocolor 2 pastel are water soluble and not made of oil. Oils pastels are oil based. Both types of pastels need to be sealed: Neocolor 2 needs to be sealed with an. spray varnish, as liquid varnish applied with a brush will smear. Oils pastels never actually dry completely, so they need to be sprayed with fixative, then varnished. Hope this explanation helps!
@@kathleen_rietz_artist thank you for explaining!!
@@mimis289 Sure thing!
I was always told you could not go over oil with acrylic? Confused
Hi there! Thanks for your question. I understand your concern. The amount of pastel I applied to my paper was minimal, so I am not concerned about my paint not staying in place on top of it over time, unlike if I were to use a heavy buildup of oil pastel and then trying to paint over it. I also personally would only do this technique on paper. I have a mixed media oil pastel & acrylic painting on a large sheet of paper that I framed and it's been hanging in my home for 8 years under glass without an issue. I can only speak for my experience. When I have used a combination of oil pastels and acrylics for canvas paintings, I layer the oil pastels on top of the acrylics, not under. Then I seal everything with fixative and varnish.
I realy like to watch your video. Beautiful abstract art!❤ Thank you for sharing it!
Thank you!

Oh my gawd! So beautiful!!!!❤
Thank you!!! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I am enjoying your You Tube videos. In this one you referred to a Mock Up or Source How do you make your mock ups?😊
Good question. I take a photo with my phone or tablet, then import it into a program such as Procreate, then add a new layer on top of the image that I can draw on with my stylus and experiment with placement of the gold leaf until I find a composition that I’m happy with. The online course that this video is from is called ‘Glimmering Gardens’, and in the course I go more in depth as to how I work out compositions through mockups. You can find the course here: kathleenrietzartist.thinkific.com/courses/glimmering-gardens

Thank you. I'm itching to use them again! Let me know if you try them. Happy painting!

Thank you. Yes, for my paintings, I use canvas unless otherwise stated. I have a couple of videos showing me painting abstract color studies on acrylic paper.

Love this & for want to give it a go . Please tell me how you mod the black/dark teal color . Also what are the names of the other paint colors you used such as the pink & coral, greens , etc . Can you take a closer video of the long handled scraper that looks like a paintbrush in your video? Your transcript says you used a glazing medium ... what did you use & when did you apply this ? I want to follow you but please explain more in depth the steps & paint colors/mediums you are using . Thank you !!! It is beautiful & I so want to learn your process . Looking forward to part 2 & 3 !
Hi there, That dark teal color was one I custom mixed more than a year ago. I believe I used Payne's gray, Winsor blue and probably raw Sienna....not entirely sure, but that seems pretty accurate. I have just added links for some of the products used in this painting, but could not find the long handled shaper tool. However, here is one on Amazon: a.co/d/fVDc9bH Here are colors I used for the painting: Titanium white, Payne's grey, Gold green, Quinacridone magenta, Indigo blue, Hooker's green, and Naples yellow. Here is the entire 3-part series playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLBhdh1QAndzlV69Wrh8n54qklLU3n6yHB.html&si=JVrafR8m6YKeD1OQ

Can I please ask what was that super soft blender you used I’d love to try it, which brand, where can I find it? Help! 😅🙏🏼💕💕
Thanks so much for the kind words. I am so happy you found this video useful and enjoyable ! I got this particular brush from my brother, but I used Google and it appears it is called a mop brush. I believe it was a mix of Payne's gray, Winsor blue and are Sienna. I mixed it over a year ago. Thank you for subscribing !
Beautiful!
Thanks for watching!
I love your style. I would love to see your pallet- not exactly a question but you must put on gobs of paint. I bet it is a painting in itself😁
Thank you! I don't necessarily use a ton of paint, and whatever I have left on my palette at the end gets mixed and used either to paint the side of my canvas or start a new painting. You can see my palette in the videos I shoot from overhead.
🤩preciosidad de pintura
Gracias.
I love your UTube videos. So informative. The gold leaf blending is a great technique to keep it from looking just placed on, but still keeps the glints ❤
Thanks Cherie. Yes, it's my preference and my style to integrate the gold into my paintings by layering over it a bit. I love the effect.
Hi Kathleen 👋 I have used that same acrylic paper and cut it to make painted bookmarks for friends and family for gifts. I've had difficulty with paint application and blending, as you mentioned the paper really soaks up the paint. I can't wait to try the matte blending gel first!! I always learn something new from you...thank you! 😊 Love that color palette, too!❤
Thanks so much! I think you’ll find that a couple of coats of matte gel medium will make a big difference. Bookmarks are a great idea. I like making gift tags out of mine or cutting them apart and framing them. Have fun, and happy painting!
Beautiful. Sehr farbenfrohes Bild. Macht gute Laune.
Danke! 🙂
Your really a pleasure to watch , I’m sure your a wonderful art instructor . I know this probably a very dumb question . Where does someone go to school to learn to do such beautiful work . I know you make your art your own but you did you study in a university ? .
Thank you. I attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago in the late 80s and went on to work as a freelance commercial artist for the home decor and gift industries for more than 2 decades, taught art to children and adults, illustrated more than a dozen children's books, and finally took a job as a Project Development Manager for a little over 5 years. I re-invented myself many times throughout the years, but always painted and drew on the side, until I was finally ready to make a career of being a fine artist several years ago. Art school taught me some basics, but most of what I have done throughout my life has been self-taught.
I love your style!
Thank you!!
I love your tutorials and the style of your painting. Did I miss how you lay the gold leaf embellishments in this video?
Thank you. No, I had not intended to create a TH-cam video around this painting. But as I was about half way finished with the painting, I thought it might be nice to share what I have been working on and also some new techniques such as the blending brush and Neocolor II pastels. So I made this video. I may show how I apply gold leaf in another video, but you can also watch my video "Adding Gold Leaf to an Acrylic Painting" th-cam.com/video/TEuLr9D2m7M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5ZUKaHwWbyI1sP5D
@@kathleen_rietz_artist Thank you so much. The link was very informative!!!
@@mercedehizadi4695 Oh good! Thank you for letting me know.🙂
I know your florals are abstract, but to me there is a feeling of realism especially if I squint my eyes and see a garden of beauty. I love 💕 your style and your work is beautiful! ❤😊😍
aaahhh, I see what you mean. I just squinted and I can see that as well. I Love that we all see things in a unique way. Thank you for sharing that.
Very beautiful! I love your artwork and your videos are inspiring and educational. I am just starting to work with acrylic painting and find it fun to work with. But I have had problems with composition and choosing bright colors. My paintings often end up darker than I would like. I need lots of practice, that's for sure.
Thanks for your comment. I hope this video was helpful. It's nice to practice on small sheets of paper like this, or even keep a sketchbook for practicing. You'll get there!! The more you paint, the more you'll learn. If you find that your paintings are always looking too dark, try first establishing some of your lightest values and some of your darkest values, and then add your middle values and see if doing it in that order helps art all. Happy painting!
@@kathleen_rietz_artist Thank you for the tip. I definitely will try that. I think I been working the darks first and then lights over it. I guess I should have done it the other way around. I'm on Facebook and X in case you're interested in seeing my art journey. :)
We need to know the colours used and really it was not a demo. There are other channels that show the whole process which is easy to learn
It was definitely a demo, and there was plenty to learn from the techniques I demonstrated in the video. I did not plan to film this painting as content for TH-cam, as the painting is for a future collection I’m working on, but felt there was quality info to share, so I decided to film my techniques midway through the painting. There are no rules, by the way. Only positive vibes and free content are shared on this channel. If you are interested, I have plenty of content on TH-cam that shows complete demos from start to finish, along with lists of my paint colors and materials used, generously offered for free. I also have paid courses you can check out that go much more in-depth and also include a free private Facebook group where you can post your coursework and receive feedback and support. This my channel, and decide what to share and I offer a lot of valuable information for free. And yes, there are plenty of other channels you can watch if you are dissatisfied with the content I offer. Have a nice day.
