Awesome!
Thanks!
Amazing video to learn the more complex technique. Thanks for the share!
You're very welcome!
Love this one but I'm having some trouble with expansion 😅What's the best way to create the outer ring on a 32 grid without having to disassemble the center piece? Even with the CP from your e-book its a tough one
Yes, the spacing on this pattern certainly makes it more challenging! The key thing to keep in mind as you add the next ring around the center is that you'll be adding six rhombi, six hexagons, and all the triangles needed to support that (two triangles for each other shape) in order to arrive at a stopping point without pleat overlaps. Both triangle and compound wraps will be used, and you may want to practice the pattern with an extra grid spacing between all the twists to get the sequencing down before increasing the density again. You've got this!
One key thing to remember is that you won't have all six rhombi around the new hexagons when you finish this ring - that's left for the next ring. The place to start is adding the two triangles and a rhombus needed to complete the alternating rhombus-triangle loop of six twists using a pair of parallel pleats from the previous ring and then work your way around the center from there.
@@GatheringFolds Thanks for these insights! I'm not entirely sure I follow them completely, so I'll downgrade this version to a testing model before making a good one. (read: I'll probably tear the paper this time) Will play around a bit with the folding techniques and I'm sure I'll figure it out!
@@maikelshuvit You're welcome! Another thing that could help is watching this video and mentally replacing the closed hexagons and triangles with open hexagons and triangles: th-cam.com/video/3Q2i5TZFx54/w-d-xo.html
@@GatheringFolds I just finished it with the closed triangles and hexagons, with lots of cursing in between hahaha. Up next is the open variant!
What type of paper do you use?
I use mostly Skytone paper, which is a medium-weight paper (89 gsm) that stays fairly stiff even after being folded many times. You can get some for yourself here: gatheringfolds.com/products/50-sheets-skytone-paper
i have no clue what this is supposed to be or what it's for, but it looks cool, so you get a like
Thanks! It's a sped-up video of me folding a piece of paper into a repeating pattern, which I'm doing because it looks pretty. This is a learnable skill and I'll be teaching this pattern specifically in a tutorial soon as part of a series of 25 tutorials I'll release from Dec. 1-25, called Advent of Tessellations. Happy folding!
I love your music choice! One of my exercise routines uses that one and the virtual coach always jokes how mischievous it sounds. And it does!
Thanks, Nancy!
For someone who has Dyscalculia I am terrified of numbers but so drawn to Tesselations.
The shapes are much more friendly than numbers 😉
Thank you this is all so fascinating to me.
You're very welcome! I'd recommend my free Tessellation Foundations series for learning even more about these grids: training.gatheringfolds.com/start
@GatheringFolds Thank you so much. For someone who has been terrified of numbers all my life the idea of being accurate with folds does not scare me at all. Finally at the age of 70 I am drawn like a moth to a flame.
@@k-cera The tessellation rabbit hole is deep - welcome, my friend 🤗
Please share what the original folds were. I am fascinated by them.
Do you mean the background grid? I folded 24 divisions of triangle grid on the hexagon - check out this video for the technique for the division by 3: th-cam.com/video/dGvHidKTRTo/w-d-xo.html
@GatheringFolds Thank you for all these wonderful examples, fascinating and certainly inviting. 😊
@@k-cera You're very welcome! ❤
I wanted to know how you come up with these ideas, it's immensely imaginative, I would like to have something like that, but I'm into 3D origami, I'm thinking about starting to practice tessellation
Awesome! I switched from modular origami to tessellations about seven years ago and never looked back. The key technique I use for coming up with tessellation patterns is to think of a tiling (a way of connecting twists, explained here: th-cam.com/video/C8a01xKqzGA/w-d-xo.html) and then think of what choices of twists to use in the tiling (like this: th-cam.com/video/bTYHvOvHlSk/w-d-xo.html). I also have a blog post about the whole process, which you can see here: gatheringfolds.com/blogs/news/tiling-based-origami-tessellation-design
😮😮
What percent of your total folding consists of gridding? Incredible work btw!
Thanks! In general, the bigger the piece, the lower the percentage of gridding (depending on how much is left as a border). This one was probably about 20-25% gridding time.
i folded 64x64x64 in an a4 size lable sheet, and the lable sheet is better than butter paper
I discovered your 2024 version yesterday. I will buy it this year!❤
That's awesome, happy folding!
Wow! You began only 7 years ago? A lot of work since 2017! 😯One question: how do you flat your origamis so firmly? Thanks for your lessons 👍
Yes indeed! I'd been folding origami for much longer, but the tessellation adventure started pretty recently. I flatten my tessellations in a stack of acrylic, with plenty of weight above the top-most piece. You're very welcome!
Some questions. 1. What kind and size of paper do you use and what is the gramage. 2. Do you draw up all the lines with a pencil before you begin?
Hi! I start with a 19x12.5 inch rectangle of 89gsm Skytone (which you can get at gatheringfolds.com/products/50-sheets-skytone-paper) and cut it to a hexagon with 7 inches per side for most of my pieces. The massive gold pieces were also folded from Skytone, but with much larger starting paper and the larger white pieces were folded from some butcher paper. I actually fold all the background lines before I start folding the main patterns - nothing is drawn on unless I'm marking references during a class.
ممكن تترجمي للعربي 😢😢😊
Unfortunately I don't speak Arabic, but you can set up auto-translated captions on all of my videos. Happy folding!
That looks so trippy! I am in awe with your designs as usual
Thanks! I'm constantly amazed by how many different ways these basic twists can be recombined!
I love that energy! I need to try think more like this and embrace having fun, thanks for sharing all this great content ❤
You're very welcome!
Great! You have a channel ❤
I'm glad you found it, welcome!
Oh my word you have really got me going crazy to try this. I just love them all. 💕
Its impossible to even imagine.
This is so incredible.
Thanks 😁
I saw a twist box that collapses joined together to make a book.
Cool!
Absolutely stunning.
Thank you!
Omg I’m so happy I’ve found this channel I love tesselations but there just aren’t that many resources for learning them, I can’t believe this channel isn’t more popular thank you so much
You've very welcome, and I'm glad you made your way here!! 😍
i never seen u making 3d model of origami,
That is accurate - I specialize in tessellations that I prefer to fold flat.
@@GatheringFolds am bored of finding origami models and can u give me an origami model name that i can fold
@@Su5hanthI’ll give you one! Which level of origami are you on? For intermediate: cat by Katsuta kyohei, Hard: hammerhead shark (I dont remember the designer but it’s on JMorigami channel Very hard: kingfisher by Morisue kei

Thank you for your great explanations, I was able to make a nice piece of art with this tessellation
You're very welcome - I'm glad you were able to complete the pattern!
What an interesting fold! It was challenging but the video helped A LOT. Thanks for the instruction and design!
You're very welcome, Nancy!
I thought origami tessellations would always be beyond my skill level. Your videos changed that, thank you so much Madonna!!🐸🐸 I just finished folding 'closed hex-open triangle-closed trapezoid-mix depth rhombus' on a piece of vintage sheet music! A friend saw it and was baffled.😶
Your channel is the only place where you can learn about the tessellations! I am very grateful for it!!!!
I'm so glad you're enjoying learning about tessellations here! ❤❤
Very fun to fold! And it's quite an unusual design with that open rhombus on the back. Thanks for teaching this!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Nancy!
Thank you so much for this sharing and motivating. I hope i can finished mine❤❤
You're very welcome, Zusanna! ☺
At the time you demonstrated this, I thought it looked so hard. It's amazing what some extra experience will do. While challenging, it was very doable. I even did it on a 48 grid! Thanks so much for showing this.
Congratulations, Nancy!

Genial! Great!
Gracias, thank you!
That’s beautiful 😍

What gsm should I look for when trying to find good butcher or craft paper?
The glassine I have is 40gsm, so I'd look for at least 60 gsm or so, up to 90 gsm. You might be able to find a sample book of papers (print shops often have them and paper manufacturers will send them to you) or another way to sample a variety of papers to see what feels best for you.
what kind of liquid should i put on my butter paper to make it thick like a paper
I'd recommend using methylcellulose (MC) for making any paper stiffer. My friend Sukanya has great results with using MC on a variety of papers, including banana paper.
