When Hoof Rot strikes... what we do!
มุมมอง 1.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Dairy sheep can be more vulnerable than other breeds of sheep when it comes to hoof maladies. See how we trim our sheep's hooves in a pasture. We apply and discuss different remedies for hoof rot and scald and explain our 'why' behind each of them.

Come walk the pastures with Kyle and I while we explain our tips and tricks for ram management in the fall. Rut season is a phenomenon when hormones increase and males get more aggressive so that the most strong will breed and ensure healthy babies in the spring. This is true of deer and some farm animals. We share how we manage the hormones on our farm so that you can have peace of mind on you...

Learning to make butter

This really isn’t a how-to video. It’s just me sharing my learning process on making butter, what kitchen tools I ended up using, and watching the textures of the milk change to cream and then butter. Shearing the Sheep

I saw you on sow the land ❤❤😊😊. I subscribed hope to learn from you 😊
@@marilynrobertson6265 yay! So glad you are here! Planning on getting a lot more good content out to you all in 2025!
just found your page and absolutely love it! we feel called to have sheep on our farm which is in the process currently. what are your favorite kind of milk sheep?
@@lottfarms I’m so glad you are here!!! I will need to do a video soon on different breeds soon, won’t I 😂 I go through an in-depth explanation on breeds in my book, ‘The Guide to Homestead Dairy Sheep.’ Short answer is that we milk crossbreed sheep. Lacaune and heritage breeds or East Friesan combined with heritage breeds seem to do the best for us. It’s a tricky topic and doesn’t have a quick answer in my opinion.
Whose mom is Simone? And what cross is she? I thought she was a cracker ewe at first, but I think you only have white GCN’s no coloreds? She is beautiful whatever she is. If you get an itch for making another sheep video I’d love a quick run down of the breeds you have and some of the crosses!
Ugh sorry, I posted the comment before watching the whole thing! Do you have Simone’s mother though? I love the Tunis color
Beautiful reel! Well said.
@@coxhomestead545 thank you friend!!!
Omg the cow and sheep playing together in the field is so stinking adorable ❤
@@relmk1 they are super cute!!
Tropical too snow in 1 hour😅
@@leeboss373 yeah I guess I should have times the posting better 😂😂😂
Glad you touched base on the copper. I’m scared to offer it free choice like a few do for sheep! But I’m a huge believer that we should offer some. Hair sheep also require or can handle more copper than wool sheep
@@quailjailss I am a firm believer that copper is safely offered free choice ONLY if Dolomite/magnesium is always available so they can antidote if they overdose. Since I don’t have a lifestyle where I trust myself to check the magnesium levels daily, I don’t offer free choice mineral bars at this time.
@ same, when I meant offer some, I meant have some sort of source for copper or not completely try to eliminate it. I think the copper boluses are great, even for dairy breeds or more modern wool breeds. I’m too scared to try it on my girls though 😆 gonna wait and try it on a set of wethers and see how it goes. Like you said the more primitive breeds really need that copper though I feel like. And I was surprised to find a few dorper shepherds in the south saying that’s the key to raising dorpers that don’t need to be de wormed every 3 months. They’re offering it free choice to hair sheep! I’m like eek! But hey it works for them
Not sure how I missed this, but great video about hoof issues, thanks for sharing!
They seem like lovely people! Question!! What kind of grass are their sheep grazing that far south?
Their yard is planted with winter rye & wheat along with a southeast cover crop mix which has vetch, turnip, clovers, and field peas. Their hay is a Coastal hay that is grown in North Florida or Southern Alabama.
Where from KY are you from? I’m from Louisville starting my homestead and looking for dairy sheep and can’t find any.
Central Kentucky about 2 hours from Louisville. Send me an e-mail and I'll help you find dairy sheep! whoopsydaisyfarm @ gmail.com
Love seeing the smaller operations. People think they need 20 acres to achieve self reliance through agriculture, but if you use your property in the most efficient way you can do so much with so little. Of course there are still inputs and probably not 100% self sufficient, but that milk is way healthier than store bought!
Absolutely! Thats one of the things I love about sheep - you can care for them on smaller properties and they can still thrive. And the milk is PHENOMENAL!
Subscribed now! I didn't know you had a TH-cam channel too. I look forward to watching.
Loved this ❤️ thanks for sharing, Rachel! I can not wait to have sheep again, they are such wonderful creatures.
@@apinchofpatience they really are amazing creatures! So glad you enjoyed!!
I use kopertox from Tractor supply it seems to stick on better and hold to hooves longer. Nice video. Merry Christmas!!!
@@EdRoberts81 I will check out that product! Thank you for sharing!
Stehen auf Draht. 😢
Cayenne is antiparacitic. Maybe just use cayenne.
I have wondered how much the cayenne does to kill the parasites as well but need to do more research on its efficacy as a solo treatment
Surely by keeping Aurora, you would be worsening the parasites resistant gene.
If we have to chemically treat her more than 3 times then she’ll be culled. I don’t cull dairy sheep only after one strike though. Especially when there’s dynamics like did they run out of minerals and we didn’t catch it (which happened) or were they on an old lot that needed rest (they were) that effect a sheep’s resiliency. Given how deficient our soil is in so many nutrients, it’s unfair for us to expect the sheep to thrive, improve the soil, provide us milk AND be 100% parasite resistant all at ince
Thank you, very informative video 👍
Could you share that cayenne pepper recipe again?
@@MountainMamaJohnson sure and I’ll put it in the description too: 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 Tbsp Olive Oil A a healthy glug of Apple Cider Vinegar or Kombucha. Mix well and put in drench apparatus
@ awesome thank you!! 🙌
Thanks for covering bottle jaw. great information!
@@vickiSS so glad you enjoyed it!!!
Great video! We use hoof and heal. Our only needy sheep goes to the processor tomorrow! We’re anxious to see if our diary cross will need TLC like this. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! ❤
Can we please buy your book here in UK? There is zero information on dairy sheep.
@@Terri-n6w yes you can! Go to my website (www.Whoopsydaisyfarm.com) and select the ‘book and shipping to the UK’ option
We use copper sulfate in horse hooves for abscesses. It’s a WONDERFUL product!
@@CraftyFoxAcres it’s such an underutilized product that is so helpful!!!
Great video. Thanks for the info!
When we are walking, the ram can be aggravating. When he wants to walk behind i keep my stick behind me like a tail that never quits moving. I swing it back and forth and it gives me a bit of space. But if a ewe is in... he is easy to deal with, he is laser focused for two or three days letting me know she has been covered.. i know you know so much more and appreciate your sharing. Stay blessed
@@3boysbees having a stick ‘tail’ is a great way to make yourself look bigger, and also encourages the ram to keep his distance!!!
❤
I deep in thought over that people group comment. Born and raised in these East TN knobs and thats the first time i heard that phrase applied. Thank you for your perseverance in your video journey... schools no longer require reading so video is ever more important smh God bless y'all.
Hello, coming over from Sow the land, keep the filming going!
Also here from Sow the Land.. it was a great video and enjoyed hearing your excellent advice. Im looking forward to seeing more of your content on sheep and farmlife. Blessings ❤
I had no idea that sheep have horns!!wow😮
So sorry all the people that are living in this tragic situation. So so sad.
Came over from sow the land I know nothing about sheep so this is all interesting.
Welcome!!! We are going to really try and get more sheepy content coming out!
Thanks for making this video, I saw you on Sow the Land and was checking out your TH-cam channel and saw this. I’m sure they are very thankful for what you did for them by posting about what they are dealing with. Stilling praying for all the people who are struggling with their loss. Thankful that there “church” is still standing strong.
My pleasure! Totally not my normal or planned content, but opportunity arose. Thanks for stopping by! I’m hoping to put out a lot more content this next year
More dairy info please.
We are going to try in 2025 to do better about publishing more information about dairy sheep!
Hi, I am from Louisville KY, trying to have my own homestead. I live on 5 acres and i have 16 chickens, 10 goose and 5 Muscovy ducks. I am trying to get dairy animals and have been checking goats and sheep. I found goats but it is SOOOO hard to find dairy sheep. Do you have dairy sheep for sale?
We occasionally have sheep for sale! Please fill out our contact form on our website and we'll be happy to email you more information about this
Wanted to pass some info on to you from a local dairy sheep farmer here in Missouri. She said her and another local dairy sheep farm use copper bolus, the stuff they use for goats, on the dairy sheep for parasites. One lady uses it every other month, the other lady just uses it twice a year and both claim they haven't had any parasite problems since starting it and dont use any other wormer. I have no idea, just passing on what she told me as I was discussing buying some sheep from her.
Yes we use copper boluses every year! Our soil is so depleted tho we really need to replant our pastures so the sheep get enough nutrition in their forage, as it just isn’t there right now. I think that’s part of their problem.
Very interesting topic - not something you often see on sheep nutrition. Do you have experience feeding your dairy sheep leaves and twigs from trees? I've heard that this is a good substitute for hay, but being new to sheep farming, I would love to hear about your experience. Maybe it's a topic for another video :) I am on the waiting list to get dairy lambs this spring. I'm very excited and can't wait, but the more I research, the more I realize how much there is to learn.
Thank you for posting this video. Very interesting!!! I'm getting diary sheep this spring and would love to see more videos on the topic: what sheep eat in addition to standard pasture grasses and alfalfa... And hear about your experiance with trees/ leaves that they like or medcinal plants.
Interesting that they like the produce so well! I am just starting out with my flock of dairy sheep.
Those are some sweet sheep! Do you have a ram?
Yes we have a ram flock but this group is all girls at the moment
i love it! I will watch for your recommendations on dairy sheep. I plan on getting 2 this coming spring.
Maybe if you cover yourself in wool clothes the sheep will start to think you’re one of them lol
We only have 3 acres. Without a lot of our own graze we and our children will walk the sheep to neighbors grasses every day. I do feed grain and hay but grass also everyday. Priceless walks
Yay! More dairy sheep!
Super video! More baby, please.
Love seeing the animals!

2:38 is the cow eating the sheep's food ? Are they sharing 😆
Well it was SUPPOSED to be the sheep’s food… and the cow said “MINE!” 😂
