Just additional facts so that we could at least derive some interference on the real intentions of the Americans during that tumultuous years of the Philippines Independence Movement. First, and perhaps the key question, was it really the American intention to help, first the Cubans, to liberate their country from the yoke of Spanish imperialism? If that is so, why were the Cubans not allowed to participate in the surrender ceremony by the Spaniards to the Americans in Santiago de Cuba (the capital)? Why were the Cubans not also allowed to participate in the Treaty of Paris? The same happened in the Philippines. After the mock or arranged battle between the Spaniards and US forces in Manila (walled city), the Filipino delegates in the Treaty of Paris were not allowed to participate nor the Filipino "freedom fighters" allowed to enter Manila as a respect and as a joint effort (if that was really the good intention to help the Filipinos attained its freedom from Spain) to get rid of the Spaniards. Both incidences would tell us something of the Americans real intent. In 1896, the US secretly offered to buy Cuba from Spain who rejected the offer. What's the intention? To liberate them from the yoke of the Spanish rule? Teacher Farah, my apology in advance if I will correct you. Why would you also succumb (as most of the Filipino historians) in labeling the Filipino fighting forces at that time as "insurgents"? Although it could mean revolutionaries or negatively "rebels", would it not be better to change this insurgents to "freedom fighters"? When they fought against the Spaniards, we don't call them insurgents, but when a new master overtook the helm, we called them insurgents? Were the Filipino compatriots at that time "rebelled" or the continuance of the "freedom movement" against another imperialists? I think, we've been subjugated by our erroneous definitions of who were our forebears' intention. Personally, I could not accept they were rebels or insurgents. Would you Teacher Farah? Would we want to be called "rebels" simply because we were under foreign masters or simply we want to have our own freedom, hence, better called "freedom fighters"? A minor correction: the Filipino-American War did not last that long until 1946. While officially ended in 1902 there were still skirmishes by our Filipino "freedom fighters" or rebels or insurgents (if you abide by the definition of the invaders which most historians gladly accept) until 1913. Oh, poor rebels, oh poor insurgents, why rebel, why not recognize the new occupiers? Is this how we treat the motives of Gen. Macario Sakay, Simeon Ola, and most notably by our Muslim brethren who continued the fight for freedom against all odds? That's it, rebels or insurgents?

It was an amendment to the Bell Trade Act, which gave full parity rights to American citizens and businesses.
