Pushing Limits and Crashing My Versys-X 300 on Gravel
I have 2013 Concours 14and the 2022 ZX14R you show same color also a 1982 KZ1000 .
This is my next bike for sure. It will be perfect in Cambodia and checks all the boxes for me. They are very rare here but I see a few pop up on the used market, likely imported from neighboring Thailand.
Hi from Ireland, I too have the Versys x 300 as well as a few other bikes. Suber machin what part of the world are you based?e
Hello friend! I am from Missouri, USA
@@SheldynRyder next year I'm shipping my bike to Canada riding to Dead Horse then spin around and riding to Argentina. You never know we may cross paths
I'm hoping to see the Arkansas railway museum
I hope you take care of your body. The kind of riding you seem to enjoy speaks Dual sport all the way! I have an X300 and can't even imagine going on the trails you are on. X300 is too top heavy and shocks are not made for off road. But I admire your guts!
Thank you! The ground clearance gets me in trouble quite often lol I may go for a dual sport eventually, but have really been enjoying the Versys
I ride a 2017 X300, and yes, I am older than you... but wow, I would never try to ride on something that difficult on it.
Another fellow VX3 rider! Thanks for watching
It was a great weekend at the Rally. Headed back down to the camp today for some more fun!!! Till the next time we ride together, keep the dirty side down.
Have fun!!
Nice! Time for my weekly dose of Versys abuse. The things you do with that bike still blow my mind. Im super interested in the V Strom 800... Too bad you didnt get a longer ride. It would be great to hear the opinions of it from a fellow VX300 guy. Awesome vid as always. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words! Plenty more VX3 abuse to come! I wish I had more time on the 800. Felt really nice, but we were also caught behind a few cars so I didn't get to open it up much either.
That is quite the adventure you took on with that bike. You ride it very well…..being young and tough does have its rewards. Be interested to know if you found any deficiencies with the bike when you got home? It took a pretty good beating by the look of things. Any overheating problems? Thanks for the video and convincing me that bike is a contender.
I would say the bike survived the abuse well! I noticed a few things that I need to work on after returning home. After bottoming out several times, the skid plate shifted a bit back, which is now making slight contact with the rear brake lever. This has happened before and is easy to adjust the skid plate back into place. I have never had overheating problems with this bike. I have also idled and ridden very slow in 90+ degree days for a long time with no problems. The gauge can be very deceiving, which causes a lot of people to feel like they are running hot on these VX3s but in my experience, I have never had a problem with overheating.
Thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the motocamping adventure with the Versys-X 300. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe if you haven’t already! For more updates and behind-the-scenes content, follow me on Facebook: facebook.com/SheldynRyder! Also, thank you to Eric, Ty, Jake, Ken, Mark, Pat from Houston, Tony, and many more people that I spoke/rode with along this adventure.
Which year is this model ?
2012
Good video. But your list of mods for the XR is completely inaccurate.
The mod list is directly from the owner and is accurate. Maybe you are looking at the Mod list for my Versys-X 300 which is also in the description (the Versys-X is my main bike). The XR mod list should be just above that. Thank you for watching!
I have long begged Sweet Baby Jesus and Kawasaki to build the Versys-X 500… It could be the ultimate middle-weight adventure sport bikes… Neither our Lord, or Kawasaki has answered…!
Why disable your traction control? When it is flashing, it is off (Not functional).
On tight twisties? NO! At the pace you were riding, a Ninja 400 would have been fine.
What the hell happened to his gas tank?
He went down and a curb hit the top of his tank. He just bought a used one off eBay recently.
Very nice! I rarely race but plenty of friends made at the highway roll on. The connie is one of my favorite bikes. Reliable and efficient. Not for the rider who needs to reach top speed immediately, but rather one who wants to crush miles at a higher pace with similar comfort to a harley. Vstream and ecu flash and you're good to go! (I used a take off tbr full zx14 exhaust and an Ivans tune. Total blast) Ride safe! Love from California!
Thanks! This bike is definitely a mile crusher. I have a Vstream (the adjustable windscreen is awesome) and a tune from Shoodabeen Engineering. Stock exhaust though!
get ecu tune and 2 brothers can and it will get smooth power /want more dual zx 14 exhaust !
hell yes it can put better suspension on it penske shock back and front fork work and it will be a tool in twisties ! get ecu flash and really go get dual exhaust zx 14 headers
Thanks so much for tuning into the video! I really appreciate the support. If you enjoyed this content, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button and give it a thumbs up - it helps the channel grow and means a lot to me!
The best way to stay planted on gravel is to air down the tires, but dunno how much u can with cast wheels?? Such capable little bikes, I always liked them just Im too big and my jacked up KLR fits me like a glove. I always wondered why they wouldnt put this twin 300 or 400 in a KLX platform { Rally style...big tank, windcreen, luggage } but it would probably directly compete with the KLR so no sense for them.
I don't know if I'd say it was built for it, but it sure can handle gravel and fire roads with ease. I gotta say I have pointed mine down some trails I had no business taking it on and it has never let me down...my skills are a bigger downside than my Versys x300! It is such a great bike, but what I wouldn't give for a few more hp!
Nice job. I ride one too and mostly on gravel-- in the great plains area. But, I avoid large gravel / rock. I also avoid sand, as the Versys is too heavy for sand. Keep up the good work!
I use to live in Audrain county .
40 yr old technology. Yes, probably reliable as but do I want to ride a brand new bike that rides like my last dirt bike from 40 years back?
Hitting pause straight away to answer the question/title... being direct competition to the Suzuki V-strom DE 250SX (which I have) I'm going to say it can handle some gravel, but it's not made for it. the factory fitted tyres (on the V-strom) are the worst tyres I have ever had on any vehicle. they will push it though very wet soft dirt, but that's their one ability, quite scary at speed, dangerous in the wet, and do about as well as a sport touring tyre on gravel. I didn't like the ergo's of the Versys 300. and they tyres don't look any more offroady, less offroady actually, which may make them safer on road. but they both have quite short suspension travel, designed to be comfy for commuting, not performance orientated, not Dakar rally spec, just low cost & comfortable commuter suspension. so No... not made for Gravel, but more suitable for it than an MT-03 (not that I can fit one, and MT-07 almost fits me. this is why I got the V-strom!)
Great video! Hope to see you at PITF in the spring
Yep... your bike took a good beating for sure!! Something i wouldn't do to mine lol. That back tire of yours got no treads left - surprised that you still ride with it. The KTM 390 has a smaller fuel tank but would you happen to know if it has better MPG than the Versys-X ?
The two get very similar MPG. I know my Versys-X 300 sips gas on the trail/gravel. I am not sure the exact figures though, but wouldn't surprise me if it is somewhere between 60-70mpg
@@SheldynRyder my Versys gets around 70mpg on easier rides so it's pretty close.
Thanks Sheldyn, Love your channel! I have a 2018 with 28,000 miles on it. A good half of those are on gravel/fire roads. I think another thing that makes it a great gravel road bike is the power delivery and throttle response is so tame. it's just a well behaved little bike!
That is a great point about the power delivery. I feel the same way! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy many more miles on your VX3.
Good video 👍
Thank you!
Keep it going man, you are putting out a lot of great videos. I am glad I came across your channel. You will build more of a following soon, I am sure! Appreciate the Versys-X 300 content, I own one as well!
Thank you for the kind words! That means a lot. You made a good choice with the VX3!
X300 IS my next bike! G310 is a close second. I despise ktm.
Yeah, I would love to ride the baby beamer one of these days! Just to see how it compares with the VX3. Thanks for watching!
@@SheldynRyder The BMW feels cheap compared to the Versys. It looks good, but just seems rough in my opinion.
@@randyholcombe4234 Thanks for that! Yeah, I don't see a lot of them around! I have seen a few 390 Adv's, and they seem like they do alright off-road.
Thanks for watching! 🙌 If you want to see the Versys-X 300 take a real beating, check out my Adventure Palooza video here: th-cam.com/video/4a_gHBXqVw8/w-d-xo.html. And if you're looking for a tough shifter lever, take a look at this one: amzn.to/3Yuy0t3 (This is an affiliate link that helps support the channel-thank you!)
what route was this ?
This was the Southwest route! Thanks for watching
lol - an adventure for sure - wish i had gone
It was great riding with you Sheldyn. Thanks for stopping to help me pick up my bike. That Hercules Glade section was super technical on my 650. Wishing I had a 400 in there.
Yeah, that section was not easy! I was wishing I packed lighter during that whole section. Throwing a pair of new tires on this weekend, which I should have done before Palooza lol enjoyed the ride and thanks for watching!
Which route was this?
This was the Southwest route
At 42:22, you got lucky when you fell on the left side. 2-3 feet further up and that big rock would have damaged the plastic fairing on the left side of your bike + maybe other parts too. And a few more feet and it would have been your leg. You seem to enjoy riding that bike in some pretty rough trails. Perhaps you should not install a 3rd windshield lol. And carry a spare shift lever bud. Next time it might break instead of just bend and you would end up stranded. What was that Palooza event anyway ?
Adventure Palooza is a pretty good size adventure/dual-sport rally. Around 300ish riders choose 1 of 4 paths they want to ride across the state of Missouri. Some paths are harder than others but the end goal is to arrive in Mexico, MO and hang out with each other. They do prizes and a whole bunch of other fun stuff. Check out adventurepalooza.com for more info
Have u done any mods to the suspension mate... just seeing if that was stock suspension taking on those rocky roads and how it handled?... wanting to do similar riding but am worried the terrain will be too harsh for the suspension
The suspension is bone stock. It survived, I wouldn't say it thrived lol the major downfall was ground clearance. There was several times where I bottomed and a few times it was so bad that it caused me to get stuck. It was fine, but overall just had to REALLY pay attention to your lines
Need headset communications to avoid the wild goose chase finding your group. Lots to learn from here. Have good tires. Make sure the bike is mechanically ready. Look ahead. Use good mounts for phones, cameras, but don’t let those devices distract you. Don’t ride alone on stuff like this. Good luck in your future ventures. Consider yourself very lucky you didn’t suffer injury.
Yeah, I may end up going that route in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Excellent adventure!!
Watching your videos makes me realize what a posh, pampered, and boring existence my VX300 has lived. Truly a life of luxury. I should treat her to some excitement soon. Just not as much excitement as you experienced on this ride. Or even close. Thanks for sharing, was a fun watch.
