My Story: Quitting Drinking in College
มุมมอง 159ปีที่แล้ว
I’ve been wanting to film this video for awhile, but here it goes! If you’re struggling with drinking in college, know that there is hope and that there are people who will be friends with you if you don’t drink. There’s more I could speak about to this topic, but perhaps that will be a video for a different day! Let me know if I should do more videos related to college students!

Wow just thinking about this

What if I'm anxious that Jesus is gay
Keep making videos!
I'm jealous that you were able to do it in your 20s. I learned about it in my 20s but always put it off, only finally doing it in my 40s.
Wonderful, so you did your full Frances in 2019? That's great! And in 2021 you did your shorter one where? I did my first camino in 2021 as well, the San Salvador to the Primitivo to the tail end of the Frances.
Thank you for posting this Mary. The camino really is a special place. When did you go?
Love book recommendations! Thank you Mary :) Also, after finishing this video, I have officially seen all your videos 😂
Yay!!! So glad to hear!!
Beautiful reflection! Can you please do a flip through/ review of the ascencion great adventure Bible that you are reading from? I have been wondering if I should get it.
Hey!! It’s actually my parents’ hahah :) I just use a normal NAB Bible :)
Once again, thank you so much for sharing this with us. I also struggle with anxiety and for the longest time I was doing heart, lung and asthma tests to figure out why I always had trouble breathing. Turns out it was anxiety and not a physical health problem. I pray the Lord gives you peace in the midst of the chaos that is mental health. Also, I just want to add that I appreciate your courage and applaud you for taking the step of creating a youtube channel and continue posting on it despite your struggle with jumping into something new. I am very thankful for your channel and your authenticity and look forward to getting to see more of your videos!
Hi Randa!! So good to hear from you and so sorry to hear about your journey with anxiety as well. I hope you are doing well with your unique journey as well! Thank you as well for your encouragement! I really appreciate your kind words! 💕
I spent five weeks in Israel last April and I am planning on hiking the Camino next, not exactly sure when? As a Catholic it is refreshing to see your videos about hiking the Camino as a religious pilgrimage, and not just hiking the Camino for entertainment purposes.
Woah! Hello fellow traveler! Enjoy your next journey!
Hello Mary . I feel you I can relate to most of the things. It also feels good to know God is Not Afraid and that he loves us and cares about us.
Amen Huge! Good to hear from you!
Thank you for being a Catholic and a Pilgrim! You are a rock star! 😊
Thank you Fr. Scott! God bless you!
Thank you for your vulnerability! Appreciate you and to hear a real authentic person who loves God and is honest. St Therese was plagued with mental illness at times
Amen! St. Therese, pray for us!
Praise God for sharing your WYD experience Mary! I spent a month for WYD doing a pre WYD 4 day Catholic conference in Fatima Portugal, participating during the WYD week, and a week Post WYD doing the Camino De Santiago. Although i was sleep deprived and sick from WYD, The Camino really helped me slow down to pray and reflect on many things. A lot of Peace, humility, and grace came out of the Camino. I was able to examine my whole life on the pilgrimage and I was just praising the Lord for everything. When I got back home I had to share the peace that was given to me to others.
Everything you said is so relatable. This is very eye-opening because my experience with depression is so similar to yours and probably many other people's. We are totally not alone! Thank you for sharing some of your thoughts on this and offering some tips that have worked for you!
I agree. Depression SUCKS. Thank you for speaking out about this. You are so brave and relatable and I thank God for you. Depression is a hard thing to go through. Praise God for coming through for you and for all the signs of love and comfort you were given while you were struggling. I have received encouraging texts of Bible verses in response to the prayers in which I was crying out to God as well. It was amazing. God is so good! I hope you are doing better. I will keep you in my prayers <3
Thank you for this, Mary! Before this year, I do not remember myself experiencing much anxiety. The last several months were hard on me, after experiencing extreme burnout and exhaustion from the mix of service and a 9-to-5 job. Ignoring the burnout for months and changing nothing in my routine made the situation just worse, and I started experiencing phases of depression and anxiety. It took me a lot of thinking and sad nights to finally grasp at the culprit of this extreme moodiness. A few days ago I finally talked with the service leader and this, in addition to pouring my aching heart to Jesus, has helped me enormously. I relate to all your tips and thank you for them! And I add another, which is a recommendation from Christopher West: "Go within, with Him." I can't emphasize enough how much this period has taught me to prayerfully reflect and go within myself, to discover wounds and allow the Physician of my soul to touch and heal them.
Hi Antonio! Thank you sharing so truthfully everything that you have been experiencing, even within the last few weeks. Your words are a stronghold for us to take courage and to continue to trust in the Lord with everything we have, even if/when we feel weak. Praying for a mighty healing for your body, mind and soul!! Jesus come!
hi mary, do you still drink here and there or no alcohol for you at all ?
Hi Hugo! I do not drink at the moment.
Yep, it’s a challenge.
this summer was so difficult. i experienced depression in a way i never l have before. thanks for sharing your story! i would love to hear how you worked your way out of it. lots of love to you, mary ❤
Hi Ashley! Ohh girl, I know, it's so difficult. I'm with you girl. I would love to hear from you more about your journey as well. Lots of love and great video idea!
thank you for talking about this!!!
Good too hear from you .
Welcome back! Honestly WYD feels long gone for me. Thank you for the reminder that we're where we're supposed to be 🫶🏼
Hey girl! Hope you’re doing well!!! 😁
Good day- Yeah-how gorgeous ~goodnight- 🙌
Wonder what the Jubilee in 2025 be? LISBON WILL LIVE FOREVER!
How much does it cost to attend world youth day?
Well done! Bless you! I’ve done 2 Caminos French and Portuguese. Recently in October ‘23 I went on pilgrimage to La Selette and Lourdes. I went to Confession and asked my local parish priest to bless me on day one of the pilgrimage, then attended Mass whenever I could. Our one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church is so beautiful, and pilgrimage is a wonderful way to worship and earn indulgences! ✌️❤️🙏 from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks for opening your heart and sharing your story with us, Mary. It was great. Maybe on next videos you could tell us your opinion about bad friends, bullying, drugs, and other problems in college. God bless you!!
May 2024. Selecting gear and testing it now.
Yes!!! Buen camino!!
I see my group and I in this video! Sad I didn’t get the opportunity to say hi to you! ❤️
Can’t believe you’re in it! So cool :) glad I could pray with you!

Greetings from polish social media team! For me WYD is all about hearing God's wisper. Also I absolutely love accidentally meeting friends from previous wyds in the crowd. The unique thing about this WYD was a focus on a catholic social teaching and emphasis on WYD being open for everyone.
Amen!!
Great video! My dad struggled with drinking but he's been clean for a long time.
Thank you for sharing your story. I personally never liked drinking before I even started growing in my faith. The taste is way too bitter and the alcohol burns my stomach + all I can think about are the neurons in my brain that I am killing with every sip or what the alcohol is doing to my kidneys. I very rarely drink, but when I do it's for social purposes. I get 1 drink and sip on it the whole night just to not seem rude in a way for not engaging with the group or person because it feels like letting someone drink alone is the same as letting them eat alone. Also, I would never risk losing self control. It's way too scary. Thank God for bringing you out of this and being here to share your story and inspire others who may be struggling 💕
Randa! So well said! I agree with you. I love how you mentioned not eating alone/not drinking alone- that is a unique perspective to think about. Thank you so much for sharing!!💕 you have a beautiful heart!
In my family there were some alcohol problems, so I know that stop drinking is really difficult. Patience, faith and family/friends are important. Thank you for sharing your experience. (p.d. sorry for bad english)
Thank you for sharing your story as well. It is so hard when alcohol runs in the family. God bless you!!
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing this, Mary!
Niall! Thanks so much :)
Thank you for sharing . Blessings .
Thanks for sharing! I also was really worried about the crowds and it was especially difficult for me during the opening mass. A few friends and I were trying to reach our group. It was nearly impossible and I was starting to panic but thanks be to God it all worked out. The moment of silence during the vigil really stood out to me too and to several other people I've spoken to. It was amazing to see 1.5M people in silence adoring our Lord. It was an amazing experience but it didn't feel very spiritual because of the crowds and distraction. I didn't pray as much as I hoped I would but I'm still reading the WYD prayers on the app and reflecting on materials that have been provided to us. The biggest thing I realized from this WYD is that it was the first time in my whole life that I've completely abandoned myself to God. It was like He was showing me through that week how He wanted me to live in my entire life. I'm glad you had a good experience. Would've been nice to run into you!
Thank you so much for sharing and being so real! What a gift the Lord had in store for you at World Youth Day: to abandon yourself more fully into His loving providence. He most definitely wanted you there💕
Great recap! I loved Fatima too. Our accommodation was a 5 minute walk from the 2 basilicas. The preparation from our group leaders telling us that there will be long lines, and big crowds was definitely needed, and even preparing us saying that we may not get into the talks/ events we wanted also helped us. When walking to the opening mass or the sleep out, i found it beautiful to be one of many pilgrims travelling to hear the word of God and receiving Him.
Yes!!! What a gift to be SO close to Fatima! It seems like you’re group leaders knew how to lead well :)
I can totally relate to this! Even though it was overwhelming in that crowd, it was a very humbling experience! The whole experience was nothing like Ive ever experienced before, and seeing everyone there for Jesus was beautiful! Thanks for all that you share through your page, especially preparing for the World Youth Day. It definitely helped a lot! God bless! ❤️ (I'm not sure if you remember me, but I met you in Baixa and we took a picture 🙈 as well. I'm glad that I spotted you outside the restaurant 😁)
Hey girl!!! It was soooo good to meet you!!! 💕 thank you for saying yes to the Lord and following Him like Mother Mary!! You are a gift!!!
This was an amazing recap. This was my first WYD and it began with so many issues that towards the end I was thankful because I was glad I was there and experienced the Love of Jesus through so many people. Got to speak with few about their cultures and how the church is trying to connect younger people to Jesus once again. I did not have a live english translation the last day, but a few amazing friends translated as much as they could to us, and we were so thankful to them. The subways and buses were indeed hectic, but the energy that the people had threw all our tiredness away. Looking forward to the next WYD now, if I can I will surely try to volunteer just like you :)
Honestly yes!! There are so many unexpected things that come up at World Youth Day! What an experience you had to meet so many others! What a gift!!
Loved this recap! I'm still reflecting and processing a lot of my experience. I went as a solo pilgrim, and for Days in the Diocese, I was hosted by a family São Miguel island in the Azores. Getting to know the people there--my host family and the youth group that was with us--was the highlight of my experience. I then spent the whole week of WYD with them. Saying goodby was so hard, but I am so grateful to have met them.
you're brave!
What a beautiful experience! Would you go again as a solo traveler?!
I was there for the night of adoration and Bishop Barron
So glad you were there! It was a beautiful night!
