Prepping Warp on Warp board
Weavers will often need to measure their warp yarns before putting them on (or dressing) their loom. This can be done on a very basic tool called a warping board. In this video, I show you how I measure and calculate the number of warp yarns I am preparing for a project. I have lots of tips and options so that you can decide what works best for you.

    I weave with my homespun 2-ply wool yarn so I have to wind 7.5 yards to get 5 yards of finished cloth. Warp waste and shrinkage in fulling and dyeing account for the loss in length.

      I haven't had problems, but I don't use it if I'm not weaving all the warp right away. I am really liking firm buckram fabric. It's used in baseball caps. I find i get the best results with anything that is firm enough hold flat between layers and doesn't take too much room.

    ❤ I am so happy to have stumbled upon this video. You’ve explained better than any weaving to that I’ve watched, even better than some of the famous ones in my paid online courses! I like how you sideways patted your warp threads in front of reed to check for tension issues. I also like the way you use larks head knots when you tie your warp onto the back beam. In addition, I’ve been longing for someone to address the ways your weaving shows you that you advanced your warp threads too far and the fell-line became too close to the front beam. Thank you over and over! I’d like to hear more tips like those. Please keep producing videos.😊 There’s just thing I think could have been improved upon is that I found the music in the background too distracting. I have a hearing disability. I even wear hearing aids. Even with them, I could not hear well. I found your warping board video much easier to follow. God bless

    Since I am an architect by trade, the building paper seems to be a product that might leave a residue on the warp. I am sure your process doesn't do that, but I want to caution everyone - be careful about the choice of paper, because experience tells me that the asphalt might bleed onto the warp threads under certain conditions. Love the video, because you have shown the reasons some of the mistakes I am learning to work thru happen. Now I am off to warp through the front instead of the back. It looks like it is much easier!

    • @sandraclarkfineart6903
      @sandraclarkfineart6903 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. I agree on the tar paper. I only use that for very short projects that won't remain on the loom long for the very reason you site. On a floor loom I learned using corrugated cardboard. However that takes so much space that could be used for warp. On a table loom there just isn't that much real estate for your wound up warp. Now my go-to is a firm buckram fabric. But it is difficult to find. If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears. I'm always looking for ways to improve processes!

    Dont you have to take one thread from each side of the cross alternately? You said nothing about that. Just typical of a woman tying the reed frame with a piece of wool. There should be a fixture on the loom for this.

    • @sandraclarkfineart6903
      @sandraclarkfineart6903 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you turn the cross so that it is stacked and always take the top thread, you are alternating the legs of the cross. No,I didn't make a point of clarifying that would happen, but if it is done in this manner it is evident that that is what is happening. Interlace your fingers and rotate your hands 90 degrees away from you- there's your stacked cross. If you move off one finger at a time starting at the top, you are alternating hands. You don't alternate removing from top then bottom. Some looms do have fixtures to hold the reed upright while it's being threaded, but many don't. You certainly could build one, but in typical woman fashion I choose the most efficient solution for my situation to get the exact result I want. Thank you for the compliment 😊
