    Thanks so much for shouting me out and I was super happy to win the voucher last month! Was so surprised that the Mary Robinett Kowal mentioned as a translator was the Mary Robinett I’d heard of through the writing excuses podcast. She is a busy lady! Apparently also a puppeteer! Who knew? I’m definitely drawn to cats on covers - they are sneaky! 😂

    Not many of these are attracting me, but I did ask my library to buy “we’ll prescribe you a cat” ❣️ As to cats on covers but not really a part of the story- I noticed it with “what you want is in the library” & “Kamogawa a food detectives” a cat is mentioned once or twice but doesn’t have much (if any) role.

      I like the sound of most, but my mood is more toward the lighter tone books like the cat ones 😊. Celebration gives me Bolla vibes and that was a well written book but such a downer. I've just managed to snag the advance reader copy for "We'll Prescribe..."but not for the one I want to compare it to, so I'll have to wait to read that one. Deea,November 7: Return to DallerGut Dream Department Store will be out! 🥳 I know you really liked the first book and had to share with you 💛 I'll try the physical book as your experience convinced me my enjoyment of book one was middling because of the poor narration.

    This is great! So helpful as one of my goals is to read more translated fiction. I'm confused by 2666, however, as I have a translated copy of it. Is a new translation of it coming out?

    • @PageTurnersWithKatja
      @PageTurnersWithKatja 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I usually point out when it's a new edition but previously available, but 2666 slipped by me! 😂 Let me know the year of publication and publisher of yours to see if I've missed any editions. I found that *2666* was released posthumously in 2004, a year after his death. The original Spanish edition is over 1100 pages long. Natasha Wimmer's English-language translation was first published in the US in 2008 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and in the UK by Picador. The UK edition has been out of print and is being re-released by Vintage Classics next month. In fact, Vintage Classics will be rolling out new editions of most of Bolaño's work throughout the year. There was also a newer Spanish edition released in 2017 by Debolsillo, and ebook editions in both languages have been available for roughly 10 years.

      @@PageTurnersWithKatja The Natasha Wimmer 2006 edition is the one I frequently see available in stores. It's surprising to hear it's out of print where you are as here I can find it at any decent size book store! Haven't read it yet, but glad to hear it will be more widely available.

    • @PageTurnersWithKatja
      @PageTurnersWithKatja 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      There are some variations in the number of print runs the UK presses do for certain US books - most are widely available on the same release date, but when I was judging for the booktube prize I had a situation where I needed to obtain two books direct from the US e.g. Built from the Fire by Victor Luckerson. The UK edition release dates are still pending - though Abe, Amazon and more offer the US import for about $10 delivery and $20 RRP.

    I’m a fan of odd short story collections so I Don’t Care really appeals and I’m also keen to read the new Mariana Enriquez as I loved The Dangers of Smoking in Bed. Don’t be put off by the horror tag, I’ve seen this put on a lot of books lately which are really just dark, perhaps grotesque in some way. Cursed Bunny was called horror and I think you enjoyed that one 🤔. I think the 2666 release is a twentieth anniversary edition as it was first published in 2014, I’ve never had the guts to try it-because of its apparently gruesome content, maybe one day.

      I did like Cursed Bunny! 🐇😃 The Dangers of Smoking in Bed sounds promising-I'll give that a try first. Thanks, Jo! I managed to highlight the new editions of previously translated books when I covered the August releases, but 2666 slipped by me for this video! I appreciate you mentioning the previous English edition. I did some digging, and Vintage Classics will be re-releasing most of his work throughout this year.

    I didn't like this book very much. I thought the writting was a bit disgruntled and the story stayed at the surface of what her experiences were like. Even when describing the people she met or how her own experiences of reading, going through a divorce, which can be pretty significant events, I feel the author could have explored those at a deeper level, and try to weave the stories together in a more harmonious way. Would love to know what other people thought of it

    • @PageTurnersWithKatja
      @PageTurnersWithKatja 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      👍I hope other readers respond on seeing this. The experience I wished she could have explored with greater depth for us **SPOILER ALERT**... Getting that weird manuscript from one Perfect Strangers member depicting their time together very differently from her memory and then tagging more imagined future in to "their story" definitely one of those moments I was referring to where she did things quite differently - I think a lot of people would have been more cautious in their first meetings. I liked it as a quirky story with book recommendations and someone looking to challenge themselves, but agree it would have been better if she was less surface level about the most interesting parts of her experiment.

      @@PageTurnersWithKatja We have a Kinokuniya Bookstore where I live. Ordering books that aren't in stock is very convenient. Just a sidenote: Romanized Korean has its own conventions. -eo- is a simple vowel, an open -o- sound like in Yeon (which for me rhymes with Jon). The -o- in -Dong is a closed o sound (probably like in Dorchester or surprised Pikachu face "Oh!") Sorry, if that's a bit pedantic. Occupational hazard.... teacher's gonna teach. What a bummer about How to be a Dark Lord, I have not heard much positive response on it and I would be the mismatch in marketing had a lot to do with that. Sarah Rees Brennan has a new book coming or out that has a similar premise I think and am trusting that one a bit more to deliver. I need to get to Tainted Cup! Glad To hear you loved it, Another rave on the pile pushing me to it.

      Thanks for the heads up on SRB. I think Dark Lord is love or hate reading. I just looked up reviews and booksandlala loved it. I like a lot of her favourites and it's interesting to hear such a different opinion.

    So what is the distinction between a triptych and a trilogy, when it comes to books? 🤔

    • @PageTurnersWithKatja
      @PageTurnersWithKatja 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think in this case, it's to create a sequence showing different elements of the same subject matter rather than being a continuous story /stories.

    Wonderful video idea, I'll be looking forward to more of these! I did not get on with Boulder but loved Permafrost so I'm looking forward to reading Mammoth. I did not know there was a new Pineiro coming out, sounds wonderful.

    Hi Katja, I always turn to your channel for translated fiction. Unfortunately, I don’t get along with magical realism, but you have a few here that hits the spot for me. One is the laundromat because I also love stories of community and I also read Elena knows. I read it in Spanish first because I couldn’t get an English copy. And it was a different experience than when I read it in English. It was a very interesting book. I bought Claudia Pinero book boulder but I haven’t read it yet. I was expecting to read it with buddy but the reading fell through. I’ve been reading Japanese mysteries recently translated and having a great time, even though the last one didn’t work for me. It was called pro bono by my new favorite author Seicho Matsumoto. I’m still going to read all of his books that were translated because I lived in Japan for 3 years and loved being back there in the world of hispostwar Japan. I was there in 2003 but many of the street scenes and the customs are still very similar. Have a wonderful time reading. Aloha friend.

    Love the idea of a regular translated/global fiction video Katja! I think the focus on reading only translated works can miss countries where many authors write in English such as India and South Africa so global fiction works well. I was only aware of Mammoth so thank you for highlighting so many new titles, especially the new Jokha Alharthi. I loved Celestial Bodies and although Bitter Orange Tree didn’t work quite as well, I’m really interested in Silken Gazelles.

      Thanks, Arianne. Agreed, CP has such a brilliant style. I'm excited about all the books, but especially for TotF and Canneti's 😊. Also TOtF is now showing a 6 August publication date, so that's 2 weeks sooner than I originally expected ✨️

    I love historical fiction of this period. But after reading Sansom's Shardlake series, most other writers of this period pale by comparison. Their historical research seems sketchy and so their writing of Tudor England much less real. I am rereading Lamentation and am gripped again by its writing even though I know how it ends. Any writer that can satisfy a harsh critic like myself and induce a rereading is top drawer. After Tombland I wondered what would happen to Matthew, Jack and Nicholas. Now I won't know.😢

      You know what I love? When a book is so good that you can read it over and over again and it's still gripping. And I agree, I totally wish there could have been more books in the series. Future instalments to look forward to.

      CJ Sansom was working on his next Shardlake novel called 'Ratcliff', set in 1552, when he passed. His process entailed lots of note-taking. So, there may be enough for another writer to finish it. Honestly, I'd rather they left it alone rather than someone else muck it up. But as with most successful fiction series, I just know they won't.
