72. In-group Bias #decisionmaking #criticalthinking
Friday at 2 P.M., and you are in a heavy traffic jam. It is scorching hot!
Suddenly, a car tries to cut you off, which gets you upset. The rude guy's car has a bumper sticker of the long-time rival of your favorite soccer team.
Pfff! What a jerk! "Watch where you're going!" you shout.
Minutes later, a second driver cuts you off. When you are about to react, you notice that it's somebody with the same Jeep Liberty that you have been driving for the last ten years. This time, you give a friendly nod to the driver and graciously let him pass.
Why do we treat people better when we feel that we have a connection with them and when we feel that they are part of our group?
Check out the In-group Bias.

Imagine yourself at a board meeting. You just proposed a couple of ideas to improve the annual sales of your division. When you are expecting some reactions from the rest of the board, you hear the "sounds of silence." Nobody has much to say about your ideas. Minutes later, someone else, a colleague with a higher ranking in the company, suggests more or less the same ideas. To your surprise, he...

In 1966, the American psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote: “If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.” Why do apply a specific tool or skill to many problems, even if it's not always the best solution? Imagine yourself buying popcorn at the movies. You can't watch a film without them, though this time you are not that hungry. There is usually a small bag for $1.50 and a large bag for $4.00. Today, you find out that there is also a medium bag for $3.50. Which popcorn bag do you get? Watch out with the Decoy Effect! Hello guys! I am sure you know that we lie many times a day. We say small lies, big lies, white lies. How do you feel when you catch yourself lying? Uncomfortable, disappointed? You don't feel anything at all? Are you a liar? You probably see yourself as an honest person, but you lie all the time. So, how do you resolve this conflict? Check out the Cognitive Dissonance concept.

Do you remember that classmate who loved to grandstand and interrupted and challenged the professor despite not having read the required material of the lecture? Annoying, right? Or do you remember people who, after being exposed for the first time to a topic, boasted that they knew more about it than most people? Why do we get overconfident when we just learned a little about something, not un...

Have you ever been in one of those meetings where the group, instead of focusing and discussing what matters, like why the company failed to reach its annual goals, gets caught discussing something like the Xmas party? When buying your smartphone, did you spend 90% of your time thinking about the color and the birds and whistles of the phone and 10% thinking about its storage, speed, and qualit...

Imagine that you are planning a holiday in South East Asia with your family. On Sunday, you opened the newspaper and read that an airplane crashed in a distant country. No survivors. You start to get nervous about the trip. Should you cancel the whole thing? "Maybe we would be better off taking a road trip or staying home," you tell yourself. Why do we think that things that happened recently o...

It's Friday night, and you will stay home, watching a new Netflix series with popcorn and gin tonics. You are tired and don't want anything else. Suddenly, your phone rings and one of your friends invites you to a party. You really don't want to go, but will you regret it later? One hour later, you are having your gin tonics at the party. Why do we anticipate regret in many of our decisions and...

Are you in one of those WhatsApp groups with more than 100 members? Isn't it annoying to find a tsunami of birthday greetings every two days? The greetings keep flowing even if it's 9 P.M. and the birthday girl hasn't shown up. It feels like a waste of time, but is it? Do we greet the birthday girl to make her feel happy and loved, or do we do it to show everybody in the group that we are moral...

Hello guys! I know you very well. You have a great need for other people to like and admire you. At times, you are extroverted and affable, while at other times, you are introverted and reserved. Sometimes, you are too critical of yourself. You pride yourself as an independent thinker. That's you, right? That's probably all of us. Did you think this information applied specifically to you when ...

Hello guys! Some food for thought. Would you believe me if I told you that beautiful Scarlett Johansson is funny, witty, kind, and generous? Would you believe the same about fascist Adolf Hitler? No? Do you think he was probably disrespectful to his companion Eva Braun and violent with dogs? Why do we attribute traits to a person based only on one observable characteristic? Hello guys! Here in Mexico, where I live, more and more people are playing padel, a blend of tennis and squash. "If everybody is playing, it must be worth it," I thought. Last December, I jumped on the bandwagon. Remember when you were a kid, and your mom told you: "Ahhh, so if your friends jump from a bridge, you will do it too?". Why do we adopt behaviors because others already did and endors...
