Jagex Bad: Monetization & You

After a cataclysmic survey shook the Runescape community, many players have begun to wonder what the future looks like for their favorite game. I used to be of a similar opinion in terms of damage calc being pre anim or post just needing to be unified. However over time Ive come to appreciate the nuaced difference that both styles allow for in combat encounter design space. Is it a arbitrary knowledge check? Absolutely. Even so its a fairly minor thing to learn. Your solution of just speeding things up to make it at parity would not work as the feeling would be categorically identical to how it is at present.

    • @TheoryWiseOS
      @TheoryWiseOS 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think an appreciation is perfectly reasonable. My main point of concern is that the people it turns off (new players) are the ones we should work on retaining to keep the game growing. I'm personally okay removing a feature I appreciate if it means more consistent growth for the game I love! Speeding things up wouldn't be the same as it is currently, because it would still be reactive while currently it isn't. You'd need to react quickly (think Leviathan) rather than predict or just take random chunks of damage.

    • @Jigoogly
      @Jigoogly 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheoryWiseOS so if its not sped up to be at parity with current "on anim" speed it would make for a fundamentally different game. Worth mentioning is that it would be a total overhaul of every mob in the game that doesn't currently use damage on hit (the overwhelming majority don't use damage on hit). Not only is that an unfathomably large amount of dev time but you'd be losing an incredible amount of depth from what are considered to be some of the most engaging pieces of content in the game explicitly because of how it currently functions. I don't mean to belittle your experience but its a bit telling that you think the current system is unreactable. The point of the current system is that you are not always meant to be reacting, you are meant to be planning and anticipating at times, this is a deliberate design choice, even within it APM plays a massive part of a player success. If you could simply react to everything so much depth would be lost in PvM not to mention PvP. This discussion reminds me of PoE1 skill tree. The skill tree is massive, complicated, and keeps away players who otherwise might enjoy the game from being able to get into it. Yet it would not have the player base it does if it was as boringly simplistic as diablo, torchlight, last epoch, grim dawn, etc. GGG is well aware of this as can be seen from the long past GDC talk Chirs Wilson gave on 'designing PoE to be played forever' suffice to say, its a deliberate choice. In the same way the Old School Devs understands that while complexity might scare some off, a lack of depth will bore those who intend to stick around. I'd be curious in a few years once you start to get into and complete colo and inferno in the main game if your perspective might change as mine did.

    • @TheoryWiseOS
      @TheoryWiseOS 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Jigoogly I agree, it would make for a fundamentally different combat experience, but I believe it would be a better experience both intuitively and for new players to understand and engage with the combat system more freely, while also opening up the opportunity to more readily and confidently learn new content without resorting to guides. Again, I empathize with players valuing this content as it is, and I'm coming in as almost a third party and pointing out what I have no enjoyed, but it's worth mentioning nonetheless. Personally, after having done so much difficult content in the game, I not only do not particularly enjoy this older style of damage, but I find it actively frustrates. The depth it offers is that of demanding timekeeping in your brain (or via an external plugin like the metronome), which is depth that I do not find compelling. I rather have reactive, intuitive (yet difficult) design, but that is just my taste. I recognize that the game is balanced around taking unaccounted damage, but somehow Jagex has managed to strike a balance without this. Look at ToA -- everything there is something you react to and the baseline mechanics are not only intuitive, but the raid itself is far, far, far harder than say, CoX. The difference between this and the PoE1 example you gave is that I'm not advocating for simplifying something, I'm advocating for clarity of purpose/design. I do not support over-simplifying.

    • @Jigoogly
      @Jigoogly 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheoryWiseOS This might sound semantical and a bit of a retreading of the discussion but I have to say that the very concept that damage is unreactable is in and of itself an inaccurate representation of the state of things. If enemies and their damage output was truly unreactable lazy flicking would not be possible, the inferno would not be possible, the coliseum would not be possible, many of the GM/M combat achievements would not be possible. "I am not compelled by... do not enjoy... and am frustrated with the combat of osrs" your words exactly. Homie it sounds like you'd prefer to be playing something with an entirely different combat system. Lets not forget why this game exists at all, Jagex fucked with the combat. You are asking them to mess with the combat again except this time its turn every encounter into a hyper simplistic darksouls roll simulator. This isn't about the 'poor fools who like things how they currently are' this is about why the game exists at all. At its heart OSRS is a rhythm game not a reaction game, it always has been due to the nature of the server ticks. I find it very odd you mention TOA as an example because TOA is a raid filled to the brim with damage sources you can do absolutely nothing to avoid: Kephi rangers chip, Baba chip (unless you consider red-xing an intended game mechanic), P1 warden balls, P2 Warden chip, P3 Warden Akkha attack chip, lvl2+ Zebak blood barrage, and unless you can butterfly perfectly and don't get unlucky Akkha chip, the entirety of the Quite Prayers invocation. The game is not balanced around taking unavoidable damage that is categorically incorrect. It has become balanced around chip damage ever since the edition of the blood fury/other sources of pseudo passive healing that make it so easy to sustain with perfect play- so much so that new encounters post blood fury release have had so much chip damage built into them that BF is almost a neccesity- thus your confusion. Keep in mind these older encounters are ones you would call 'unreactable' yet people can do them perfectly hitless. But lets do some math. Right now the game has content that requires anticipation, planning, and reaction. You would prefer it be only reaction based. On a mathematical level that is a two thirds reduction in the types of encounter mechanics. That is an objective and measurable loss of depth. Don't pretend that removing the parts you don't like and replacing them with more of what we already have wouldn't also equate to a loss of depth and complexity, you cannot have one without the other. Alas I had more written up but youtube comments are hardly the best place for longform discussion. If you'd like to continue this feel free to hit me up at jigoogly on disc, its nice having discussions with people who have well formed non-native perspectives that don't degenerate into slur slinging ad hominem bouts.

    • @TheoryWiseOS
      @TheoryWiseOS 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Jigoogly When I say damage isn't reactable I mean on targets that, at random, alternate between damage types (Olm, Tanz Zulrah, etc.). I do not mean mobs that can be lazy flicked. Similarly, I don't think cherry picking words and cutting all context (or surrounding words) from them is an accurate representation of my enjoyment. OSRS's combat would not substantially change if damage calcs were standardized, because most modern fights have standardized this. And again, I do not think doing this would simplify things conceptually, and if anything, it would open the way to more complex encounters. Clearing Olm is not difficult. At all. It has a very high skill ceiling, but doing decent solo or group CoX runs is substantially easier than even a 300 ToA, particularly because the fight's difficulty is tuned around taking unavoidable damage -- that is an aspect of its difficulty that is far less driven by mechanical engagement, meanwhile ToA feels like the opposite. Chip damage is not the problem here. My argument isn't to avoid all damage, but rather to mitigate large sources of RNG burst damage that obliterate resources at random. Chip damage isn't the ideal of every fight, but it's a cleaner solution to that. ToA is by no means perfect in this regard, especially at high invos, but I much rather have that than randomly getting clapped by back to back 40s on a fight as simplistic as Zulrah. As I said above, the game is balanced around unavoidable damage on content back when this kind of mitigation wasn't standardized, such as CoX. Most of CoX is finding janky workarounds to the unavoidable damage the raid was intended to dish out. Whether it be glitching out Mutta, glitching out the tightrope, glitching out the skeletal magers, glitching out Olm himself -- I think there is undeniably a depth here, but depth doesn't always translate to quality to me. Whether a fight has unavoidable burst damage or not doesn't really remove anticipation or planning, it just mitigates burst damage. Modern boss fights which do not have RNG bursts of unavoidable damage are no less planning or anticipation centric, it's just what you're planning for is more so fight complexity and less so back to back Jadding from Olm. I'm pretty sure Phosani's has more intended mechanics than the entire CoX raid, and you can quite literally mitigate just about everything other than parasite chip and sleeper phase chip.

    Im afraid of playing OSRS. Actually, Im afraid of starting any new game that involves time investment. I've played World of Warcraft for more than half of my life, I've reached rank 1, I've gained reins of invincible, mimiron's head and plenty of other rare mounts. Pages and pages of different transmog items varying in rarity and means to obtain. My bank is filled with tons of items different in their worth, be it sentimental echoes of the past in a shape of mails from friends that they've sent me for some funny reason all the way back in 2011, or quest items that no longer can be obtained. The point is, I've achieved and experienced pretty much all what this game has to offer, but here and now, I feel like it was in vain. Nobody cares about my skill at arena nor about my r1 titles, nobody cares about my mount collection or unique items in my bank. But what actually saddens me is that the world I fell in love with no loger exists, and the devs that created it are gone. All what is left is a horrific amalgama of wrong decisions, poor marketing and a testament of corporate greed. All of my effort and achievements were a sigil of love and dedication to something that is long time gone. I can't bring myself to dive into something new, because I'm afraid it will happen again, afraid that the next game is going to do the same shit to me. To be completely honest, I rarely feel like playing a new game that just got released or I've randomly stumbled upon. I always start going through that destructive thought process of how pointless it is, even in a rare case scenario of me actually liking the game. I find myself envious, but also feeling sorry for people who still have passion for games. Just my random string of thoughts that I was having while watching. Thanks for the video.

    you're right that all damage should be calculated on hit, i just wonder how that would affect all parts of the game. it would make some content far easier to farm for long periods of time, especially for bots, and may require large amounts of dev time spent on something like engine work. maybe a middle ground, like clearly differentiating the two types of attacks? some content is balanced around required damage being taken, which may not be the best balance decision, but is it worth the developer time invested to rebalance content that is to standardize something that can be simply googled? idk, its a good point but is much more complicated than it seems at face value.

      I think Jagex should likely speed up animations that rely on the older form of calculation. So, for example, Jad attacks every 7 ticks but I wonder if the actual landing of the spell effect is at 9-10 ticks. All they essentially need to do is shorten that to still keep the rhythm/timing the same, just with better visual tells for animations. I think it's worth doing this only because the MMO is still growing and having this needlessly confusing element is a huge turn off for new players. A great example is actually my GIM partner who was unbelievably frustrated with learning these differences (he came from WoW with me). It's not guaranteed to be a quit moment, but it certainly doesn't help because the rest of the game can also be overwhelming. OSRS, I think, is known for its simplicity and intuitive design.

    OSRS is a fun game, probably best played in ironman/group ironman for the genuine challenge of the game and the best feeling of progression the game can have. I have some criticism of the game though - a lot of the skills are pretty worthless considering the time investment you put into leveling them up. Prayer and Gear switching is not really fun. There isn't really a popular casual pvp mode anymore. The price of membership is going up and up while nothing much is being added in the forms of customer service or having multiple characters per sub etc. Outside of ironman, bots are a huge issue and gold selling. The wilderness is ran by south american gangs farming gold. Item progression, outside of a few key pieces, doesn't feel super impactful.

    Hope you don't get the midgame burnout, it absolutely sucks. Early and end game are way more enjoyable edit: nvm i guess your group is already pretty far based on the end clips

    I think group iron man on osrs is peak gaming but anything else on osrs is kind of dull.
