saying the movie is not philosophically inclined when it is basically poised on top of a philosofical question is kinda weird.

This doc was a tough watch. I put it off for a while because it was all subtitled and I'm not the best when it comes to reading and watching but thankfully the dialog wasn't all fast in this. But it was such an appalling watch at times to hear them (Onwar and his buddies) nonchalantly talk about the methods they used to kill, how they killed certain people (like the guy who talked about killing his gf's dad) and that one horrible guy you mentioned who joyfully talked about raping "a pretty girl, especially if she is 14". It's a fascinating but appalling watch, especially if you are someone like me who can have a sensitive stomach and let's just say during the last few minutes of the documentary, Onwar's body does not take it too well when he starts to feel remorse and regret for his past actions 🤢

I think you went in with the wrong expectations. It’s Akira Kurosawa’s dreams, that’s all you need to expect. The through line was life itself. It has dreams and nightmares as well as thoughts on preserving nature, war, nuclear annihilation, and humanity in general. If you saw his humanist films you’d probably understand this film more. It is slow and the blizzard is the worst offender but that by no means makes it a bad film. Dreams are meant to be fantastical and that’s exactly what this film is and it understood the assignment, which it looks like you didn’t.

Respectfully, it’s ironic that you’re trying to analyze a film, yet give a very bland review. It’s also ironic that you have a surface level analysis for a movie about dreams, which people often try to analyze. You wonder why a film director would capture himself leading a group of people through a blizzard, and they give up on him, only for him to lead the way to safety? It seems pretty obvious what Kurosawa’s subconscious was projecting. I don’t see how you cannot come out with an interpretation after watching that. Also, it seems odd to see the mistakes you made in critiquing the film. You refer to a cherry blossom orchard when it was a peach orchard. And I think it’s clear that all of the protagonists were supposed to be Kurosawa which you were confused on. It seems like you’re over analyzing and missing the target completely. You are trying to compare this film about dreams to other narratives in respect to their structure, but this film is clearly not concerned with plot points. Also, there are a number of very popular films with loose plots. I just don’t get that critique. It was a beautiful film.

For me, McCabe’s epiphany that he’s an empty poser of a man hit hard. It gives his almost heroic self defense at the end an extra measure of tragedy. Too little too late.

I loved this movie as a teenager and was my favorite movie for a while. There's a thread of unresolved angst for the two main protagonists that carries through the film. No wonder why I liked it as a teen. Both are in life crises that carry them in directions, but they merely observe, reflect, and muse. I do see a possible self insert. If I'm honest, does rely on the 'will they or won't they' trope that never fully resolves and it does feel as though the two protagonists are isolated by their unwillingness to fully be vulnerable, rather than snarky. Overall I still love this movie for it's vibe. My favorite moments are when the characters are exploring their environment, and being in wonder or incredulous situations, which happens a lot in this film. I wish I could find another film where the characters somehow balance bemusement and fascination with their new environment.

Not philosophically inclined? Did I hear you say that? *spoiler* Well I could name one event: "the suspicious mind is its own biggest enemy." The masters of the Lyi clan were all way too skeptical. The only person who wasn't troubled with their thoughts blinding them was the old man who was the only one that smiled and looked welcoming in that movie. It was during that meeting after Motome requested to Harakiri, which prompt a discussion from the higher-ups of the Lyi clan. Hikokuro Omodaka, the guy who cut of Motome's head, was a sadist person who abused his powers. He crafted the plan of messing around with Motome, and he was pretty much smirking the whole time throughout the ordeal (props to actor). He could've atleast given him a proper sword, but he was under the wrong impression, thus he thought of Motome as a wuss, and so he started to have no compassion for the man. I must admit, I thought Motome was dishonourable. Hearing him beg for 1-2 more days made me view the man in a low light. The film changed the perspective around in a beautiful yet crafty manner. I was wrong about Motome, and so were those guys.

Though I do agree that Nick was abusive, he did love her. I'm not excusing his behavior, but neither of us were in his shoes, or living in that time where, unfortunately, society accepted and even led men to be more controlling. Yes, he was abusive and controlling, but yes, he did love her and would've laid down on train tracks for her. These were both complex characters who had unique experiences that all we can do is imagine being in their shoes, but none of us lived their character's lives, living in that time.

You touched on the scene where Anwar is re-enacting the scene where he is a prisoner about to get his head cut off via his wire 'invention'. One key thing I took away from there was when he said he felt as the people who he tortured felt. My reading here is that he felt a moment of relief of guilt because he feels like he relived what a prisoner went through in those circumstances. This might be a crucial detail, because he allows a moment for himself to be lifted, only to be told by Oppenheimer that it was very much worse for those people because they *were* going to be killed. It is in this moment that Anwar's facade of feeling what a prisoner felt is dashed and he becomes undone. You explained it excellently, I offer this only as a point of discussion in this fascinating portrait of a man who is very likely coming to grips his himself in his old age. Which can be tough. This must be like what Hell is.

Completely understand your perspective, and respect it. There were at least a good 10 minutes that felt slow, so i can see why people think those scenes didnt belong on a screenplay or felt boring. But i honestly feel like your take is rather bland. And for how inimpressed you expressed yourself to be, your takes are almost too shallow and not very critical, which you really needed to expand your points of contention. Dreams arent always meant to have narrative. Some do, but some dont. Some dreams are boring, and then some are psychological and mind bending. Dreams didnt really feel like a story i had to understand, but an experience to be mindful of and enjoy in the moment. Similar to the mountain hike reference everyone quotes kurasawa for.
