    • @Slipbox

      It always requires tons of work to switch from another tool, that's why choosing a tool that is future proof (has a good export feature) is a good plan. Never used Roam but I believe they use json so exporting notes might be a challenge. Remnote has great import tools so switching might be easier. Remnote is a really versatile tool and I can easily recommend it to anyone.

    I think you went too fast, in your discussion on tasks starting at 2:36 in your video. To me, a deal-breaker with Mem, is that I don't see any way to peer into the future, to see all the future tasks you've snoozed until a specific day, or time. For example, how can I see what tasks I've snoozed until next Tuesday? I don't see any way to do that. Am I missing something? I didn't see anything in your discussion of Tasks that shows how that can be done. To me, that makes Mem essentially useless as any kind of task manager.

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the insight. I have to agree that the team haven't been focusing on the task management side of the app. When I reviewed the app it was very bare bones. Now there are a few improvements, but I would not use the app for task management. I am actually making a video on how I manage my tasks coming out soon. I would love that side of the app get an upgrade as there is a lot of potential in Mem for managing work with the new AI assistant.

  • @LM67286
    @LM67286 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best way I found to overcome this information overload is to purposefully slow down the process. I gave up on readwise and I never highlight anymore. I only take notes "manually" in my own words. I just started doing this so it's very slow. But over time, I'll be able to take notes as efficiently as Niklas Luhman (who was able to extract what he wanted from a text in just a few lines without highlighting anything).

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Great insight, thanks for sharing! I am currently exploring and adjusting my literature note workflow. I can identify with you on the overflowing of information. The challenge for me is the way I like consuming books and podcasts on the go (commuting on the bike etc.) a lot of the information gets forgotten. I return to it through the readwise highlights, which is helpful. I am experimenting with voice notes on the go as well as physical notes in a notebook. It sounds like you have found a system that works for you, so that's really great 👍

  • @alexkakoyiannis9346

    Curious of you opinion regarding block/node based platforms versus page such as Obsidian. It seems Logseq and Tana are the node leaders but Obsidian still is celebrated as the most powerful. Do you have any insight to advantages or disadvantages of the block/node structure?

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question! I started my PKM journey using workflowy and progressed to Logseq then Tana, all node-based systems. Workflowy was a massive shift in terms of productivity due to the node system. For a visual person nodes are great as you can see the whole thought “tree” in a glance. Additionally, you can hide nodes to make the view more manageable. You can instantly reveal and hide vast amounts of information. It's great for organising information. The cons are when you are writing long-form. Anything longer than a line feels like the information gets bunched and ugly. Transferring the writing to other formats is a slight hassle. So summary: Nodes together with tags are imo best for organising short concise information. Obsidian works really well for longer-form writing. The organisation system (tags, meta etc.) in Obsidian needs some native solutions as the community plugin works but gets heavy over time (it's on their roadmap). I love the canvas feature and is overhauling my workflow in terms of note-taking. Hopefully, this answered at least partly your question!

    Great video. I’m not sold on the Ghost Reader feature. I feel like our technology is starting to handle the process of thinking for us at an unnecessary level. Just because we have AI, that doesn’t mean we need it attached to every feature. The benefit of reading is getting to think about the text for yourself. It’s in the act of summarization that you learn. I’m not sure that should be handed off to a bot.

    Hi Tomi. Several questions: 1. Wouldn't you add a #journal or #log supertag to your Timelog entries for better later searches? | 2. Did you find some friction when creating tagged nodes underneath your journal entries? You mentioned the goal of keeping a "free-form" flow there... but I find the action of tagging and enriching fields a frictionable task for that IJ activity. | 3. How do you deal with node creation that is not driven by the "IJ" flow? i.e. Tasks created on Live searches living in other supertagged instances, moved into the bottom of the Today's node. | 4. Have you experienced writing down just having finished last action and what you think before the next one?

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David! Thanks for watching and sharing 😉 I am aware of your great contribution to the Tana community 🤘 1. I actually recently added the #journal tag to the time log for all my more personal ideas. The reason for the changes is that I am refining the more important part, which is the review workflow -> How do I go through the entries weekly and come up with meaningful action points. I have found it sufficient to go through the #shutdown, but adding a more personal #journal is also useful. 2. To be honest I have not really experienced any friction in the current way. Are you suggesting that the IJ be written under one node without fields and tags? I saw a video by Tana Nodes where he uses AI tools to extract actionable tasks from a single wall of text. Can't wait to give it a try! 3. Not 100% sure I understand the question, but I don't find it a problem as they are tagged and I find the nodes in the searches under the #day tag even though the original node gets stuck in time. I use IJ mostly for reflection. I notice that when I write, my thoughts are more concrete. 4. I saw the video by Cortex on microcycles where he wrote his thoughts after finishing the task. I personally am not great with this, but sometimes when moving to the next task I would reflect on the previous task, but usually, I just focus on the next. In the #shutdown, I reflect on the tasks of the day.

    • @daviddelgadovendrell
      @daviddelgadovendrell ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Slipbox I saw your additional explanation in Slack community, too. Great, one. 100% aligned. What I meant with the [3. Question] is better with an example: when you work on a project task, you can face it just from your Day node because you planned it previously, but also from a top-down way, meaning from the Project or Area node that task belongs to. If that is your case, you are no longer working on the Today Node. Using the IJ approach from there means: 1. You go to the Today node and write down there, or you write where you were and tag your IJ with some supertag. The second way seems convinient to remove any friction, but using it I miss the attraction power that writing into the "journal" (today node) means. I hope it makes more sense. You are doing an inspiring job with your video's style.

      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! There are no folders in Tana. Its really not necessary with the hierarchy created with the node system. When you create a new node (or bullet) in the daily note for example, you could think of it as creating a new folder. Then create a new bullet under the new node, that would be your first file within the folder. Keep adding nodes under the original and you have a folder with multiple files under them. You could also separate the "folder" nodes with emoji's if you like ✅ and then add them to the side/nav bar (cmd + K - move to -> [workspace] -> home)

    I don't really see the advantages. Why not copy the highlights directly in your notetaking app? The intermediate step of using readwise also brings the danger of cluttering your inbox with an insurmountable amount of material. Maybe my thoughts are too onesided, but i regularly find myself with an impossible to-read-list in front of me and i guess for me the app would rather enhance the problem instead of solving it :)

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great point! The challenge with copying the highlights is the multiple different sources of highlights. I listen to podcasts, read kindle books and articles online and having all the highlights from all these sources are convieniently placed into one folder in obsidian. This definitely clutters things up though as you said. In this case I really like the convinience, but If you are able to move the highlights directly its probably a lot neater. I am curious: what notetaking app are you currently using?

      @@Slipbox Hi Tomi, I'm using Logseq and am very happy with it. It made my notetaking so structured and i became so motivated that the problem of "taking too many notes" soon arose. i guess thats the downside of almost no friction with a second brain. my current goal is therefore to limit my input and only add notes if they are not alredy in a similar from or shape in my graph.

  • @AdEngineer

    Thanks for the video Tomi. But this app is only useful when you already know what to follow. What about discovering new blog posts and newsletters? Do you have a method for finding new interesting things?

      This is a great question, and something I have also struggled with. I have been going down rabbit holes and discovering new creators the deeper I go. Would love curated lists of content creators worth reading. Google will definitely not help in this case. That said it all depends on what you are interested in. My rabbit holes usually start in twitter, where I am able to tap into the communities of a given topic and then go down from there. Love the question, thanks!

    Can you explain further why the canvas is helpful here compared to just having both pages (the summary and the flashcard note (actually you could also just have 1 note in general))?

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the power of the Canvas lies in how you can keep building these visual mindmaps within one canvas. I can then continue adding new ideas and concepts and easily visually see how the ideas connect together. Its important to note that I am a very visual thinker. Having a way to create mindmaps and relationships between the ideas on a visual board help me in my thinking. You are spot on in that you can build this completely without the canvas and that's perfectly fine! I would love to hear Zitrolena how you use canvas if at all and have you found the new feature useful for your second brain? Thanks for the comment!

    • @Slipbox
      @Slipbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question! I have been using both tools in parallel for a month now but I still require more intensive use. There are a few important points that need to be included in a comparison: -> What is the main use of the tool: PKM, task management, writing, second brain...etc? -> Take into account that Obsidian is a well developed tool, Tana is in Alpha Would love to make a comparison, but that would have to be closer to a release version of Tana. Great question, thanks!

      @@countryman6083 I don't think you can even compare some 'tool' to Obsidian until is is free to use (for basic functioning) and your data stays with you. When both these marks are checked, you can put something against Obsidian, without it, there's not even a beginning for a comparison. And even after that, after you have checked both the boxes, Obsidian still wins.
