I was not expecting to see this herd of elk crossing the Rio Grande in front of me this morning. Forgive the quality since it was taken from a cell phone!

Following massive solar flare activity, the earth experienced an historic aurora that could even be seen in the lower latitudes. This is a timelapse from northeastern New Mexico on that evening. Enjoy!

During the elk rut, a herd bull like this one needs to be ready to fight at any moment to defend his position. Keeping those antlers shiny is part of the deal, but more so is the action to help manage all that aggression as another bull is fast approaching.

This timelapse sequence was filmed the evening of 9/2/2024-9/3/2024 from the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, USA. The short video shows the movement of the earth relative to the night sky with planes and satellites streaking overhead as the galactic center falls below the horizon.

As summer fades, life changes in the mountains. Young animals are full of energy and spunk. The adult male elk and deer shed their velvet and prepare for the rut. Many small animals face a life-or-death existence while they work to put on pounds for the coming winter. The predators likewise are on constant patrol for food opportunities.

A coyote skirts the edge of the elk herd and the herd bull keeps an eye on him.

Elk face many dangers, but one of the largest is man-made obstructions like fences and busy roads. In this short video, witness a portion of the Valle Grande elk herd struggle with a fence and the cars of the busy highway that lies just off the screen.

A mother mule deer and her boys encounter another young buck. A little gesturing and posturing, and probably just some having fun ensue before momma and her boys slip away into the forest.

Western Wood Peewees, Plumbeous Vireos, and Warbling Vireos are the stars of this short clip. See nest building and offspring care activities.

A school of Rio Grande Suckers filmed in the Upper East Fork of the Jemez River in Northern New Mexico. These fish are native to the Rio Grande Basin and have a limited distribution. They are a species of concern and there is growing pressure to list them as threatened or endangered.

A school of Fathead Minnows (and a few Rio Grande Chub) that have been isolated from the Jemez River in a small pond when the spring runoff subsided.
