    Squirrels can be vicious. That’s true. However, 95% of the time they are curious , playful and funny. Everything should be on their terms. Never try to force them to do anything or corner them. I’ve been interacting with the wild squirrels around here for almost a year now and I haven’t tried to pet them yet, because I don’t want to ruin the trust I have with some of them. 😊🐿

    I've handled them fine with no problems, and at other times they've handled me...big problem. When we were kids trying to catch flying squirrels, we'd just grab them before they were even slightly familiar with us, almost guaranteeing a bite. The thing about a squirrel defending themselves with teeth designed to open just about anything, their bite is easily going right to the bone, and if you're lucky, no further. Their bite is definitely worse than their bark every time. Delightful animals just the same.

    Very good advice. Wild animals fear humans yet need food. Hunger will trump fear. The safest way to feed one is toss the food to them. However, I'm retired and live on the site of a colonial farm stead. I have walnut, oak and pine that all date to that period on 2 acres so there is plenty of food for lots of squirrels. With some peanuts I gradually made friends with a squirrel (Two Nuts) that was easy to tell from all the others. A predator got her by the tail and only ended up with a mouth full of fur; thus a short tail. after several months I gained her trust and she would let me gently touch her with a finger. Later I tried using a toothbrush to brush her fur which she liked. One day she showed up with a nasty gash where her ear joined her scalp. For 3 days she let me put antibiotic cream on the wound which healed nicely. Another time her eye had been poked with something sharp and looked serious. I was able to flush her eye with eyedrops for several days. She is blind in that eye now, so I have a special place to feed her where Hawks can't see her. Two years ago she had a total of 7 babies and last year 2 of those had 5 more. I now have 3 generations of squirrel friends that will eat out of my hand. Only Two Nuts and one of her babies (Mikey) will let me touch them. All of the squirrels avoid all other humans. Hawks are a problem as they can see tasty meals running all around my yard. When ever I see any I roar at them like a wounded bear, which keeps them away. It is winter now, so I make sure they have enough to eat and fresh water every day. My friends and their antics have enriched my life and helped keep me sane for the last 2 years of pandemic❤🥜🐿🦅🐻

    I am crazy about critters. My neighbors call me the dog whisper. But I also am crazy about squirrels too. I started seeing squirrels in the yard and feeding them squirrels about two years ago. One squirrel comes running across the back fence when I call his name. I give these squirrels peanuts & corn every day. As soon as they see my, they line up on the back fence, but not a one of them will let me get close enough to hand feed them. Any suggestions?

    We have several in the yard we have hand raised. A few will still "Squirrrel bomb" us and jump on our shoulders looking for a pecan or whole kernel corn or black oil sunflower seeds. Two of those will spend time and enjoy some petting and relaxing while laying on a shoulder or forearm. This year we had two come back into our back porch and utilize a couple of squirrel houses to have and raise their babies. Loved it. Both of them moved the babies into the trees later on. These little guys are so lovable and special. They work hard every day to stay alive. They are playful and fun to watch and they definitely recognize their "humans" that took care of them when they were little.

    Takes some time, you have to understand their body language to know they trust you enough. I've been working with the local wild squirrels for the past 10 years and have them to the point where they hang out in my house with me. I had one that visit, boop noses with me, would sit on my desk, or in my lap, and watch youtube videos and eat seeds while I brushed her tail. I even installed a little doorway, she could come in whenever she liked, ( Few times a day ) and I screwed some branches to the wall in my office for her , there was always fresh food and water. If you make good friends with one, it's usually a female, and if she really trusts you, she'll bring her pups to meet you when they are old enough, and they'll imprint on you as a surrogate parent. Right now I'm like 4 generations into one family, all from making friends with one female years ago What really blew me away was how respectful they are in my house, they know where it's acceptable to go, and where it's not, and they obey that even when they are there alone They are incredibly observant....if even a shoe on the floor is moved 2 inches from it's location the day previous, they go into caution mode ( Tail shield ) until they've given it a sniff Truly amazing little creatures if you can get their guard down

    • @craffte
      @craffte ปีที่แล้ว

      That. Is so awesome. First off, that they know to trust you, mine are also very polite, (except Carlton, named after Fresh Prince of Bel Air, who is so mean when peanuts are being dispensed and who is always preggers 🤷), they come up to my window and put their little hands on their chest and tilt their heads to one side and that means can I please have some peanuts?...Secondly, that you built a climbing area in your office for them whaaat?! That is so nice! I would do the same if I didn't rent. It's so nice to know that there are good people out there. I never really made friends with squirrels, cat person, but now I have no pets so...everyone outside must be my pet now lol! I warn them about danger by making the classic tsk sound when I'm outside, we have so many birds of prey 😒. And sometimes I buy a bag of peanuts and as I walk to work, I take handfuls of peanuts and just throw them into the air as I'm walking through my neighborhood. Long Live our Squirrel Friends!

    I wouldn't feed a squirrel out of my hand. They can easily bite you just by mistake. I have felt how sharp their teeth are and have been bitten lightly maybe 6 times. Putting seeds in front of them is good enough for me, and I am not getting bitten any more.

    • @misbahailia3345
      @misbahailia3345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same thing happened to me. Even their accidental "light bites", are surprisingly sharp.

    • @WhistlesToAnimals
      @WhistlesToAnimals 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will agree with you on them being different. Some can run at you so fast that it doesn't look safe with them rushing in towards your fingers. Once one wanted to hug my fingers while I was offering, and those sharp claws freaked me out. Personally, I don't have a desire to be that close. Having them sit next to me while I sprinkle sunflower seeds in front of them is more than enough for me. No one could have told me how to better get along with one individual squirrel I knew for 3.75 years, and maybe other folks have unique relationships with one they may know.

    Most squirrels wouldn't ever intentionally harm you. You can tell when they're angry. I have pet many, and the only time I've ever received a bite was not from touching, but by accident when feeding: as a squirrel was attempting to grab a nut from my hand, but overshot and instead clamped down on my finger. It wasn't bad at all.
