A little cringe, but well intentioned. Impressive to see so many FTEs on the stairs of the community center in the last shot. I wonder how the ratio of residents to city employees compares to other cities throughout the country.

What happened to the video? I asked at the next meeting and found out the camera was disabled during the previous week's storm-induced power outage, and had not been noticed until the meeting was to begin. Thank you staff for posting at least the audio and the slides.

I am impressed by the public who came en masse to peacefully redress their government. The largest turnout at a city council meeting that I think I have ever seen in 8 full years of attending myself. What an honor! How many of these involved citizens would have appeared to observe the meeting of the Flags 4 Freedom committee weeks ago, if only our city administration had valued government transparency highly enough to publish those meeting schedules. Instead the administration refuses to even tell citizens who ask for that information.

"pick up window". I think we all know that's bunk. They're drive-throughs and we all know it Bryan. Thank you Laha, for pointing that out and having the integrity to say no. The idea that people will order from an app is at best encouraging idling in a parking spot, and at worst encouraging cellphone app use while driving. Running people over because you can't place an order at the window isn't very pedestrian friendly... What's the carbon footprint of a vehicular accident....

I am not very happy about the expenses that we will be assuming specially for a small city like Merriam with the new community center/swimming pool but I can see that's needed I was sad to see all those beautiful tree being removed on the new site maybe some could have been saved it takes years to grow tree I wished someone would be more sensitive to the environment. what about K-Mart site this is prime real estate, very accessible why so slow.

Wow! The outdoor pool is not much better than what you find at an apartment. Unless I missed something, the residents of Merriam just lost a great outdoor pool. This is truly a sad day for the residents of Merriam.

Excellent video and explanation. But, this wasn't in the driver's license manual/test. And you won't see HAWK explained in the KS Drivers Guide: www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/dlhb.pdf either. It states on P. 32 that 'side-by-side lights that will flash alternately' indicate an approaching train. It especially worries me to have this confusion mere feet from a real RR crossing as is the case in the video. HAWK signals are unnecessarily complex for drivers and cause confusion. These instructions need to be on a sign, on the arm next to the lights. But as a general rule, when something important needs explanation (weather that be in a you-tube video, or a sign), it should be redesigned to be made simpler. There's already a universally known light to control traffic: A (red yellow green) stop light. And regular stop lights should be used instead of the yellow and alternating-red signal that drivers are never taught unless they happen to find your video. My suggestion: Show drivers one single red light per lane. Or use standard red-yellow-green traffic lights.

This video does not explain where the $20 million figure actually came from. Is it real? Did it come from the same contractors who gave the price on a new community center? This video also does not explain how the city plans to finance the operations and maintenance; from the city's own information that looks like an increased deficit of $1.5 million or so a year. Or is that already covered by the existing MRO budget? If it's already covered, how can that be possible when the new facility is so much more expensive? It costs more to maintain a Lexus than it does a Chevy. The assumptions being made seem overly optimistic. This video also does not explain why we (population 11,000) "need" a $30 million community center when Olathe (population 135,000) spent $28 million to build theirs. Are we 12x dumber than they are or 12x better? Why don't the people who want Olathe amenities move to Olathe? This video also does not explain how the city is going to adjust its overly optimistic sales tax revenue projections in light of the fact that car sales have been declining for years and will continue to do so. Millennials don't really care about cars, plus cars have become too expensive for many people to buy. Yet, we are supposed to believe that car sales tax will pay for this costly facility simply if we ignore reality and wish for that outcome? This video does not explain the fact that Merriam homes are cheap compared to identical homes in nearby cities, precisely because Merriam doesn't have the costly amenities those cities have. People chose to live here for that reason, and now a small group wants to take that choice away. It will be hard for Merriam residents to scale up or down with age, and stay in Merriam. Maybe scaling this down (we don't need an art center in it, for example; Joco has a great art building, as mentioned in the recent county newsletter and the Nelson is close by) would be the answer. What can we eliminate to make this affordable? The city claims it sent out a survey and this is what people want. But they didn't say it would saddle the city with an unmanageable debt to provide the whole wishlist. How about choosing what's important and actually worth doing in terms of value on the tax dollar not in terms of vanity or something else irrational? Ask me if i want a new Rolls Royce. Yes, but not if I have to pay for it! What do you think about these unmentioned problems with this costly plan? Tell your city council to kill this proposal, because it does not make sense for Merriam.

Mark - Thank you for taking the time to share your comments on our video and this initiative. The decision about what the future of recreation looks like in Merriam is an important one for our community, and we hope all of our residents take the time to educate themselves on this issue and the impacts of both a yes and a no vote. The City Council did not arrive at the decision to put this initiative on the ballot lightly. We have been studying our options for more than four years now and the yes vote option (build a new community center) is the result of a recommendation by a resident steering committee, which was made after significant research and business planning. The answers to many of your questions, as well as the supporting documents (studies, surveys, and business plans) are available at www.merriam.org/BuildingCommunity. If you have additional questions after reviewing the information on that site, please contact Assistant City Administrator Meredith Hauck and she will be happy to meet with you.

Thank you for your reply. I've lived here for 20+ years, and understand that Merriam City employees have a culture of excellence. I appreciate that I have also seen that the City Council has a culture of waste and financial mismanagement--examples abound. It was on this very issue that our current mayor ran against Carl Wilkes and defeated him. Yet now we have a $103,000 wind chime sited in a high noise area, with more waste having been generated and more to come--in addition to this inordinately expensive project. This project simply does not make sense--the sheer cost versus our population size and using Olathe as a measuring stick makes that clear. It looks very much like rather than careful consideration, it's been a process of generating justification of a bad decision. The solution is to pare this down to something reasonably appropriate. That obviously has not been done, or the price tag (for construction alone!) would not be $30 million.
