The Gallic Wars: Book 8 (51 BC) | Read by Joshua Graham
th-cam.com/play/PLhAx8QYOZvYWOPXP4aB8r2nnq7ymMGqRu.html Playlist
in Book 8 of "The Gallic Wars," Aulus Hirtius picks up the story when Caesar returns to Rome. This section describes what happens after the Alesia siege, focusing on the end of Rome's conquest in Gaul.It highlights battles led by Caesar's commanders, particularly against the Bellovaci and in the land of the Eburones, ruled by Ambiorix. The book shows the Gauls' strong resistance, even after several losses. It also portrays the challenges the Roman army faces in overcoming the last of the resistance.A crucial aspect is the strategic and decisive actions of Caesar's lieutenants, which ultimately lead to Gaul's complete defeat and its incorporation into the Roman Empire. The book concludes by illustrating how Rome strengthens its hold over Gaul and prepares for Caesar's future political and military plans. make this shorter

Awesome. Solon is my favourite ancient historical figure. The way some people are infatuated with the likes of Alexander or Julius Caesar, or Augustus, I feel that way about Solon. The more you read about what those figures actually did, the more difficult it becomes to reconcile their character and admire them as individuals-- while I've found the inverse to be true with Solon.

'Joshua Graham's' resolute and humorless delivery frequently imports a heavy element of disappointment and even disgust toward Sagan's targets for what they are: for-profit charlatans and their adherents - frequently more fervent in their devotion to ideology than the profiteers, for they are the ones who have bought into those schemes, and therefore stand to lose aspects of their livelihood, rather than their mere commerce - as well as fearful hegemony and credulous, casual consumers of snake-oil and tabloid sensation. It is interesting to hear and inevitably draw parallels to today's 'Did-My-Own-Researchers' and Andrew Wakefield cultists - the common element through the centuries is ignorance, both through forces of imposition and those held with desperate conviction; as such, it is a fault that, with historical consistency, defends itself with violence and is one of the few faults upon which defeat by violence is, in turn, just. What a good choice for narration.
