LAWN & ORDER, Texas Edition

Home of the 'Getting Nice Bermuda Grass' series. Growing a healthy green Bermuda grass lawn is easy with a few steps I've learned over the years. My name is Kevin, I'm a Texas homeowner with a 20,000 sqft Bermuda grass front lawn, SCAG Cheetah II zero-turn mower & plenty of gadgets for lawn and more. I do product reviews, liquid spraying applications, lawn care & more!
*I'm not a lawncare professional, nor do I pretend to be. I simply share what has worked for me for years maintaining my own lawn, trees, machinery etc. I've done my own lawn care for 20+ years (not counting the miles I mowed as a kid in the 1970s & 80s).

Hey mate, watching from Ohaupo New Zealand. Ive used pre emerge on my lawn. Ethofumesate is what i used to try and control annua poa in my case. My ground prep was pretty terrible though so the seed didnt strike too well. Good luck!
@@nathanmark1118 well hey there mate! How cool! It looks like it’s not all that expensive either! Thanks for the tip!! Poa is very bad in our area, so maybe I’ll try that stuff next season! :) appreciate it!
So, how much did you get paid for this ad?
@@rayw7960 lol! Nothing my friend! I bought that stuff! In fact I used more of it today! I’ve almost used the entire bottle on my driveway. My neighbors surely think I’m crazy. 🤪
@@LAWNandORDERTexas Good, I might try it then.
@@rayw7960 I’ve been really happy with it. Lasts a good while too.
@@rayw7960 just ordered my second bottle. Every time I look, I find more concrete cracks to fill.
So it is just a small bottle of cement....
I was wondering the same thing. Probably would be easy to put powder in a bottle and sell it right! But it's actually a mixture of crystalline silica, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, acetaldehyde and portland cement.
Your mom calls me her super crack fillerlol
Do you have any recommendations on leveling the ground on slopes?
@@SeeTheSilence you know what, I haven’t tried too yet, I did notice the different attachment holes available in the drag. Maybe there is an easy way? Let me know!!
Can you try it on larger cracks, possibly gaps as well? I’d love to see the results!
@@SeeTheSilence I sure will!! I filled in a number of rock-sized holes in my driveway, and it filled them solid! I think with a larger crack, you can use a backer rod/styrofoam then fill it. Just me though.
I noticed their site says it'll fill cracks UP TO 2-inches. Dang!
That crack didn't look full
🤪Plenty more of them to fill when it's not a million degrees.
Does the tank have a sump area so it will fully drain even when on uneven terrain, or is it pretty much flat on the bottom? I've been looking at buying this exact sprayer and that's about the only detail I am unsure about.
Great! It has worked so well! I recommend it! It has a straight tube with metal filter that goes directly to the bottom of the tank. It empties out nicely!
@@LAWNandORDERTexas Thanks. I have one of their 26gal atv sprayers and it works well. Just need this one for my yard now!
@@wmkess there is an area that is lower in the rear where the drain plug is. It also depends how high you mount to your mower, tractor etc. you can raise or lower the attachment (bolts).
Got a link for it?
@@thenotoriouszaz thanks for the reminder! I’ll put in description. Here ya go!! amzn.to/3XjLBCV
"Bearings" and check the slap. Back off the set screws and reset, the blades will last a hell of a lot longer and also they won't get hot!
@@Loki1815 good idea. I’ll check them out again this wknd.
Rachio is absolute trash. Try it if you have more than two valve sets and need two controllers. These units will not deconflict with each other, won’t function as one making scheduling a nightmare. You also lose all the fancy weather adjustments as they will adjust your schedule into overlapping zones and thus losing water pressure unless you have everything set static a d then why do you need the “smart” bit of the controller? How about running more than one zone at once on command where appropriate? Nope can’t do that either. If you need to control more than one valve set as one look into OpenSprinkler. Smaller, cheaper and endlessly more capable. Also tends to stay connected to wifi and will keep watering your lawn if you lose internet connectivity.
I have been impressed with the Rachio ever since I installed it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course so I’m okay with that (that’s why there are different brands for differing opinions). I’m very impressed with it. I don’t understand portions of your message, so can’t help you there. All I know, it works great on all of my 13 zones and multitudes of sprinkler heads. Btw, why would you want to run more than one zone at the same time? You could probably wire your valve boxes differently for something like that, or, put two zones into the same input on the controller. And your comment, ‘these units will not deconflict.’ Does that mean they do conflict or don’t? :) just yanking your chain! Have a good day!
What type of oil does it take ??
Great question! I can only refer to their 5400 manual, it says, "The fluids used in Hydro-Gear products have been carefully selected, and only equivalent, or better products should be substituted. Typically, an engine oil with a minimum rating of 9.0 cSt (55 SUS) at 230°F (110° C) and an API classification of SL is recommended. A 20W-50 engine oil has been selected for use by the factory and is recommended for normal operating temperatures. Biodegradable oils are not approved for this unit as they degrade too quickly while in service. “All fluids should be handled and disposed of according to local, state, and federal regulations.”
Having had a Craftsman 1000 kholer for many years and still running but it's time to upgrade. After lots of TH-cam and Google and physical researching I went to a FERRIS Dealership TOPS. In my area Harlingen TX according to them nobody has any 42" or 48" available not even the warehouse, they'll have to be made and it'll take around 2 to 6 months to a year. 8a to 5p Hrs of operation and they're always jammed with people needing service but they don't can't help anybody. TERRIBLE customer service so just imagine trying to get parts or maintenance. Stopped at a KUBOTA and customer service was fast attentive huge store and fully stocked organized plus they have many Kubota locations everywhere. 4 year warranty too. Bought the KUBOTA 42" Z232 Kawasaki zero turn with free delivery next day. Very happy with SERVICE and feel confident about continuing business with Kubota and will be buying more from them . Also Ferris mostly uses Briggs and Stratton motors.
I love Kubotas, it’s a great brand, one of the best in my opinion! I had a Kubota Z724X before my Scag.
Usually depends on the distributor. You had the 2-6 month wait because that distributor didn't have the unit ordered. Can't think of any brand that doesn't have at least one or two terrible distributors ruining the brands relationship with the dealers. Main reason we cut out the middle man and sell directly to our dealers.

@@JoeSholtes thank you! Wish I could speak faster in one minute! So much to list!
looks like it makes it easier but looks hard to keep track of where you sprayed since its a tow behind
You would be surprised how well that blue dye works (too light, you can add an extra ounce and it'll mark really well). If you could spray in the mornings, with the dew, that makes for easy tracking. I have trouble going straight anyway, you won't ever see a video of me making laser-straight lines :) . I've even thought about putting out irrigation flags so I can aim for them. Ideas to implement :)
Burmuda? What fertilizer and iron did you use
@@detailsmatters-xw9ro yes. I’ve been using Lescos this year. Really impressed with its quality. You can go see what I’ve done in my step 1- videos :); last granular treatment was Lescos 28-3-10. I used a liquid 12-0-0 from Lescos for the iron.
th-cam.com/video/st1ddoqv2wE/w-d-xo.html
So um what size socket ?
I used a 15/16th inch socket. Even though, that sounds like a fake size :), it's not, fits well!
Except you have to first get access to the top of the deck...and then hold the blade in while threading the nut on.
Yes, that is right! To put them back in, shaft up into the spindle, then thread on the nut. Couldn’t be easier!
All of these WiFi controlled sprinkler controllers are the same essentially , only difference is the user interface . Rachio is way overpriced for what it is.
Not if you get it for your birthday :)
Rachio has add-ons too. Like valve monitoring (checks the current), as well as, wifi hose/faucet controllers.
@@LAWNandORDERTexas haha so true . Rachio knows most water districts offer rebates that’s why they price it so high. If they included the valve monitoring already instead of charging more for it I would be impressed. But it being a separate charge no thanks .
@@crs1474 I think it was a flat $25 so not too bad. Its alerted me a few times, but not sure what exactly it’s doing.
@@LAWNandORDERTexas the way it works the user is supposed to calibrate it with initial readings and then if it detects variation (too much or not enough power draw) it’ll alert the app. The price of the service isn’t the issue but these cost over $200 why not include it already. It’s not like they have someone at a remote call center keeping watch for alerts. The capability is built into the device already, a user is paying after purchasing the unit to activate the feature. Seems a bit silly .
This is a wonderful video review! Thank you very much for sharing your experience with others and highlighting the sprayer's features so nicely. We really appreciate your business and hope you enjoy your NorthStar sprayer for a long time.
Why thank you! It's honestly a very nice unit (comparing it to my past [brand] unit). I plan to show what I've added to it very soon. :)
Wow
Surprising isn't it!
@@LAWNandORDERTexas Yes it is
Nice, hitting the John Deere residential 7 series and not even covering the bad boys. Time to give the tired old brands a rest and cover some of the other commercial mowers out there surpassing the old jokes.
@@brandonwilson5803 yah, I didn’t have bad boy or spartan on my list. I hear bad boys have a good cut! But weren’t in my list at the time.
@@LAWNandORDERTexas yeh, I checked all those others out and wound up with the bad boy rebel and she weighs in at about 1400. All the others had major flaws and the flaws on the BB were much more minor and easily corrected. The 7 series in the list surprised me cause they consider that resi still.
Thank you for sharing

Vanguard. 40 hp. Turf tiger 2. 61 inch cut.
Great machine!
Have one here. Nice it can read a forecast and know how much rain you have. Only runs if you need it.
Mine was easier to do though as it was PnP
They are definitely nice! This one was also plug and play. Didn't take much fuss at all. We just had to go into detail to show the audience. Otherwise, we would have plugged it in, gotten on the app and been off! :)
@@LAWNandORDERTexas ah. I just noticed you rewiring it. Mine was truly unplug and plug back in. Setting up the app was the only “new” thing to do.
Great review! I have the 21 gallon model and used it for two seasons and I love it still. Just an idea for you from my experience, replace the drain cap with a brass hose shut off valve. This will let you drain the tank without touching chemicals prior to rinse. Also I got a 3/8" ball valve to cut off the hand spryer when I was not using it. This keep 20ft of chemical from filling up the line only ro have ro be rinsed again when putting away,. Enjoy and keep us posted

I recently came to a similar conclusion. I decided to focus more on my 3 yr old lawn this year. I've been watching a bunch of videos and working hard to clear up my weed problem among other things. My lawn looks so much better. Then I realized it doesn't have to look perfect. I don't need to spend huge amounts of money on expensive federalizes or equipment. Just some time and smart effort. Now I'm more relaxed and enjoy the process more. Thanks for expressing it in a video.
Exactly right, and thank you! Having that balance is key, but hard to figure out sometimes! I'm glad you found it. Any effort is good effort and in the end, all adds up, whether it be quickly or steady .
How about transmission fluid transmission fluid is cheap.
LOL, man, I wouldn't know about that one! :)
I've learned, the darker areas in this video, and I think I'm correct ARE HYBRID Bermuda blades fighting and taking over the Standard Bermuda!
He's showing you a much less expensive way to shine up plastic parts. You can use Dakota shine but it's $34.95 for a kit.. Boiled linseed oil is less than $11.00 a quart and and thinner is $11 for a quart. So for less than $25.00 you can make 64 oz of product. You can also use that boiled linseed oil on all of your wooden handled garden tools including wheelbarrows. Just sand it lightly and put on that boiled linseed oil. Boiled linseed oil dries faster than regular linseed oil. That's the difference. I remember when my Grandma decided to shine up Grandpa's car. She used boiled linseed oil and it's shining pretty good. Would have been better if she'd washed it first. Grandpa was really angry.
LOL, got to love Grandparents' stories :)
These are tree swallows or barn swallows fyi. Purple Martins only roost or build nests solely in man made gourds or purple Martin houses. Without the man made houses, the species would no longer exist.
You may be right! We have been calling them purple martins for years! Thanks for the note!! I have footage of them from last year, I will take a closer look!
Teak oil, I've been treating my wooden ladders with this combination for years.
So teak oil and paint thinner?
No disrespect intended, but all I see is a better shine and no color change on the plastic parts. You can wipe on any kind of oil based product like that to get that shine. How about showing us how it works on something that's never had this applied to it before. Something that is obviously sun faded, especially red plastic that slowly turns pink and how long this treatment will last. But, that is the cleanest 20 year old mower I've ever seen👍
None taken! Comments always welcome! Yes, but remember, this is my mower that I keep inside, and it's not faded, maybe a little. I noted I originally saw this from another TH-cam person, and he DID have an old ATV fender he applied it too, and it worked brilliantly to bring out the color. I restored old lawnmowers for years, and this was my goto for restoring old seats, and faded plastic fenders/tanks etc. I unfortunately don't have anything that is faded enough to prove it any further than my mower :).
Honda makes the best mowers and snowblowers. My Honda lawn mower is 41 years old, all original except for one wheel and air filter and the blade.
Wow! No kidding! That is fantastic!!!! I wish we could share photos on here! I'd love to see it! Send a link to a photo!
any tricks to remove the 3/8 self tapping screws? The two back ones are right next to the spring
I remember now, I used a ratchet wrench to get at them. But you're right, it's a little tight in there!
Will it let you turn on two zones? Or does the first zone shut off when you turn on a second?
You can add a slight delay to keep it from hammering the pipes as it changes from one zone to the next, so two will be on for a few seconds, but as far as I know only one zone at a time.
Looks great!! What's your HOC?
Man, I honestly struggle of bit with it. Today I’m at 2.5 with the Scag then opposite angle at 3” to get the remnants. Looks plaid right now. My Honda, I’ve got it set on the 4rung from the lowest for May. Luckily my grass is so thick right now!!
I wonder how this would affect painted surfaces 🤔
Hmm, I don’t know. You might try on a small area first and see. I think I tried it on an old lawnmower I restored. And if I recall correctly, it didn’t stay on the painted surfaces.
What is your HOC? What kind of mower are you using? Looks great!
Thank you! I use both my Honda HRX217 push mower mulcher and a SCAG Cheetah II w/ mulch kit when the soil allows (it's a heavy mower). Both get a really good cut! I appreciate it!
@@LAWNandORDERTexas I have the same Honda and my new SCAG Tiger Cat II should be delivered this week. I have about 22K SF of Tifway 419 in my backyard and 8K sf in my front. You cut all of that with your Honda? :)
