Delta shower valve clogged
มุมมอง 64K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I was helping a friend out and thought his low water pressure was due to a clogged cartridge.....NOT!....Called Delta support , they said oh do a pressure back flow test?...I don't think they wanted to mention their shower valves are a poor design....make the diverter channels a 1/2 inch in diameter not 1/4!!! Check clogged valve before cartridge purchase please

    At the 2:01 you mention the hot inlet valve was clogged/full of minerals. How did you clean it? I do not have cold water coming out of my cold inlet valve on the "rough-in valve body". There was mineral deposits and I sprayed CLR and it is still clogged. Would a small wire help clean it? Thanks for the video.

      I had a small round "rat tail" rasp/file back then. I've since picked up a few small stiff nylon brushes about 10 inches long and with a 1/4" diameter by 2" long brush on end. Perfect for smaller holes.

    How do you get the cartridge out?

    • @matthewhixson3735
      @matthewhixson3735 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tiffany, crazy I had a few minutes to check emails, news, updates, yada yada. After you take off the large escutcheon plate at wall....2 screws, there should also be a sleeve you can twist off or may need an Allen wrench/set screw for newer style. The older assemblies had sleeve that unscrewed...think large channel lock plyers.. They get really dirty/corroded. Even the cartridge can get stuck in brass valve assembly. Google how to remove cartridge and select images to quickly narrow down your style model. All should be very similar. Hope this helps.

    Had the same issues, but didn't know what it was at the time but had my sustentions in was calcium, my solution to the issue was shut the mains to the tub, remove the spout cap it with a plastic pill bottle opened the valve, removed shower head and turn the shower pipe upside down filled the pipe completely with vinegar left it overnight and the next day put it back together turn the mains back on and turn the valve on, out came all kind of calcium and black crap, gain full functionality like new.

    We have a problem with extremely low water pressure to both the tub spout and shower but it’s a two handle faucet. Replacing the cartridges didn’t fix it. Do we need a new rough-in valve or is there a way to unclog it similar to what you did? I’m just a frustrated handyman’s wife so sorry if my terminology is wrong!

    • @matthewhixson3735
      @matthewhixson3735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try CLR cleaner or vinegar and baking soda plus a small metal tube brush. Depending on the age of your water supply lines, if older copper they could be clogged with minerals, or if galvanized steel, they could be rusted and constricted on the inside. Also don't forget to take off/apart and soak the shower head in CLR and or vinegar and baking soda. Good luck!

    This may fix my situation but i have one issue, the bottom hole for mine is way smaller, any recommendations or tools i could use to clean it? I got the pb blaster and sprayed some in there but that didn’t make a difference, not sure how i can scrape anything inside there, thanks for any help!

    • @matthewhixson3735
      @matthewhixson3735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, you can use a small flat head screwdriver, one for toys/eyeglasses. You can also use a small drill bit and on low speed with a drill clear it out. I bought a set of small pick tools from Harbor Freight recently, pointed ends good for digging/scraping.

      Hey man just want to make sure, i don’t want to damage anything, is drilling in that small hole a good idea? It’s about the size of one of those smaller screwdrivers for glasses and it only goes in a centimeter or so and stops, not sure if that’s calcified or if it’s supposed to be that way. The pressure is terribly low coming out of the tub faucet and it isn’t even enough to make it up to the shower

    I had a similar problem and found this trick to back flush the valve and pipes easily. Remove the shower head and tub spout (I have both) so that gunk won't clog them. Turn off the water to the house. Remove the cartridge, then remove the legs and spool from the cartridge, (1/4 turn to the left) and set aside. Install the front half of the cartridge back into the valve and screw the brass collar back to hold the cartridge against the pressure. Turn the water on. You will have full flow from both pipes (hot and cold) and all the pressure available to blow out the gunk, and boy will it ever. Then while it has run out the tub spout for a reasonable amount of time, put your thumb over the tub pipe and it will divert out of the shower pipe. Don't get wet! Turn the water off and put everything back the way it is supposed to be and you are good to go! (I pulled the spool apart and made sure there wasn't gunk in the cartridge before re-assembly. The spool should "rattle" in the sleeve before you mate it back to the front half of the cartridge. If it doesn't you won't get any water flow either. So clean it off and make sure you can hear it moving.

      Dan I was able to use a small round file or "rat tail" A drill or dremel tool would work too, just have to be careful not to unintentionally drill too deep into backside.

    If all else fails try this. Mine must had a big clog. I tried basting it over and over. At the end I ended up drilling a small hole in the interior little tube going to my shower making sure it didn't touch the main pipe going up. That worked for me. I have a walk in shower so not sure how it will affect those with a tub spout. Thanks for the video. I spent hours testing and talking the catrige apart until this video guided me to the actual cause. The store was closed so I couldn't get a new cartridge. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    Oh, wow! I have the same faucet in two showers and just learned that there are two, smaller holes in the valve body for diverting the water. Thanks! Btw, I had contacted Delta support within the past month to request two new cartridges and they replied, "...the unit and/or parts that you are requesting are not in warranty. The warranty does not transfer ownership and is only for the original owner of the home itself." I'm not the original homeowner and didn't purchase the currently installed cartridges. So, now you know.
