Yamaha Revstar - What's with the Focus Switch?
มุมมอง 1.7K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I feel that many (not all) people who I've watched review the Revstar are too quick to write-off the focus switch. If used correctly it is a fantastic addition. #revstar #yamaha #revstarp90
Fender Player 2 Stratocaster vs Artist AS72 - Review

The new Fender Player 2 range has really raised the bar when it comes to the new standard of guitars. However, I've had this Artist for a while now and still like it quite a lot.

My partscaster (Tele) is the one I grab the most…feels great, sounds great (mine has a Billy Gibbons bridge pickup from Seymour Duncan), and plays great (mine has a Brad Paisley MIM neck).
Ha! Sat here saying "Yes!" and "Absolutely, that!" through this. I'm on my fourth build and couldn't agree with you more about the neck. I would however say "get the best neck, then buy the body from the same shop". That way shims are less of a factor. Also get a very good soldering iron, and some good nut slot files. I've done cheap guitars and expensive ones. A properly done partscaster can be top end for a quarter of CS prices. I hadn't played a Strat that sounded like a '62 Strat until I built it (for about £1200). Not cheap, but full of character and sweet as you can imagine. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate! That’s actually some really good advice. I still need a good soldering iron.
In all other "LP vs Revstar" videos I've watched, the Revstar sounds more hi-fi, has more zing to it, more highs and lows, clearer overal. This video shows the opposite. Maybe something is wrong with its electronics? Maybe it's due to variation between wood pieces?
I’m not sure if other people are changing EQ settings between guitars but this was the same setting. But I’ve only played this one humbucker Revstar and it certainly sounds darker to me
@@johnfalzon You did a great job with the comparison : ) My take away is that I should play each sepcific guitar and decide. Even among samples of the same model there are huge differences. BTW I tried a Revstar at a store and it was too bright, if anything.
@ thanks! Guitars are a funny thing at times hey?
you deserve so much more subscribers
Really appreciate it mate. Thanks!
Thanks for your reviews of the $600 Artist AS72, John. A radius of 14inches sounds flat for a vintagey-styled guitar. Do you notice any increased fatigue playing rhythm when you use it compared to the more rounded 9.5's or 11's that you play? Or is it more that it just has a different feel? Any additional thoughts you have on the AS72's flatter radius would be welcome. Thanks - enjoy your videos.
Thanks, Philip! At first I thought I wouldn’t like the 14inch but honestly I adapted to it in minutes. I certainly haven’t noticed any extra fatigue. But it is quite a thin neck and I find it super easy to play. Especially with the stainless steel frets. Definitely has a different feel to a traditional fender but everyone’s different and it’s very personal. I don’t have any complaints with the Artist. Let me know if you want to know anything else!
@@johnfalzon Cool. Thanks John. I don't know much about fret hardware - what feeling do the stainless steel frets give you - smooth with bends or something? Thanks again.
@ well the fret wire is large which allows for a light touch which is nice and yeah the stainless steel makes bends easy and they never wear out
👍🏻👍🏻

Great review, really appreciate your fair unbiased opinion. On that note I ordered the 15th anniversary Obsidian last year, should arrive in early February, looking forward to playing it.
Thanks! I’d love to see the obsidian in the flesh. I reckon it would look great 👍🏼
I use the focus switch on mine to dial back an acoustic tone, great playing!
I’ve never thought of that. I might try it
I bought the early version Revstar 420. Love it. The only issue was the intonation on the low E. But I've fixed it by reversing the bridge saddle. Great guitar...a keeper
Great tip! They are great
I can't get on with my Revstar Standard. I can't fault its quality - the intonation is faultless and it's amazing value for the price - but alone among all my guitars it simply makes my hand ache to play. I loved the idea of it and I've given it every chance I can, but I just don't enjoy playing it. I've bought all my guitars in the hope they'll be "keepers", but sadly I'm struggling to find a reason to hang on to the Revstar.
Yeah that sucks when that happens. Best to get rid of what you don’t play and get something you will
👍🏻👍🏻
Is the neck width wider in the Artist? I read that it is and wondered if it's a bit harder to play those chords that use the thumb wrappe around to the low E.
Ok, just pulled out the digital calipers: Nut width: Fender - 41.9mm Artist - 42mm. Width at 1st fret: Both 43mm Width at 12th fret: Fender - 51.5mm Artist 52.3mm. So yes, the Artist is slightly wider but the neck is thinner so that may make it easier in some situations.
@@johnfalzon Thanks!
Thanks for the review! I've wanted a comparison between the Artist signature range and a Fender series guitar. I'm happy to see the Artist guitars seem to be high quality, at a much better price point.
Thanks! Yep 👍🏼 no complaints from me so far. I have another Artist on the way to me now and I’m hoping it’s as good as this one
What about ergonomic?
I’d give it to the Revstar. It’s weight is distributed more evenly. I find the LP wants to slide off when sitting down. The Revstar is thinner and the arm and belly cuts make it really nice to play
i have the exact same Player ll Strat and love it. Well played and demoed
Thanks! I understand why you love it.
Thanks for the review mate!
Thanks for watching!
random question, is this an original song you used to compare guitars. really liked it
Thanks! Yes just something I came up with.
Very Cool, Thankyou. Awesome looking, Sounding Guitars and Demo/Review comparison video. I have the older Artist Guitars ST62 Fiesta Red Strat, and it's amazing. These newer 'up spec'd' Artist Guitars range must be Exeptional guitars as all my other ones are fantastic. Have my eye on one of the Latest Range Artist Guitars .... or 2 .. or 3 ... or 4 .... lol. And Also seriously have fallen for The Fender Player II Strat in the Hailea Yellow, Maple FretBoard, aged plastics ... Stunning .... I reckon anyway ..... Oh .. Or The Birch Green is catching my eye too now. lol. Gotta start saving..... and maybe even pass on The Artist Guitars to get A Fender (my first). All the Best. Cheers
Thanks mate! I’m glad you liked it. I don’t have any previous experience with Artist but this one is excellent. The player II is also amazing. I’m partial to the Birch Green. I’d love to get my hands on a chambered one.
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!

This video is quite timely. quit playing live years ago, but band are reforming, I always used Les pauls in the band, but only have a strat these days. So convinced myself I need a humbucker equipped guitar for the material we cover. I really want a gibson LP but they are £2000 upwards here in the UK. Being a family man with not much dough i think my conscience would be clear getting the Yamaha and a nice valve combo and still only paying half the Gibson would cost, I was worried it wouldnt do a job for me, but your video says it will be close enough, and I have heard the yamaha are well built and play well. Ill be going for a standard revstar, great video fellla many thanks.
Thanks mate glad you liked it. I think you will be happy with the Revstar Standard. It’s a great guitar and you always change pickups and get a bit closer if you need to. IMO playability is very similar. The Revstar is excellent value for money. Revstar is still heavy but not as heavy as an LP. Good luck mate and I hope the band reform goes well.
Yamaha Japan makes fantastic instruments. Really the only thing holding me back from getting a Revstar is the body shape. I know that's superficial, but its huge, which makes it look clunky IMO compared to the sleeker Les Paul. Both are great sounding instruments though. Thank you for this demo.
Yes the Revstar is bigger at the widest point but I find it more comfortable than the Les Paul. It’s thinner and weight is better balanced. Nothing looks as good as a Les Paul. I believe the Gen 2 Revstars are smaller than the Gen 1.
I don't really even play much anymore but I've been so intrigued by the Revstar, I'd just buy it and let it sit there and only play it once a week (if I could afford to do silly things like that). I appreciate your brief, extremely simple no-bullshit comparisons. Most videos have way too much talking and jrking off taking farrrrr too long showing off their guitar skills rather than letting the guitars speak for themselves.
Thanks for the kind words. I just make the video's I want to see and yeah I get sick of all the pointless talking.
The Gibson sounds nicer imo
👍🏼👍🏼
Very helpful comparison. Thanks for this, sir! ❤
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Putting in a request three doors down, kryptonite
One day!
No way you put it together yourself
Nah not that one haha
Go Johnny
It helps that the person has some talent and no's how to play 😮
I want a Revstar Professional but i dont like the colors and i want one in Black with white racing stripes :P With P90 and a Humbucker sadly dont know how to order it custom without voiding warranty.
Yeah Yamaha really need to expand on colours and options
How many guitars do you own my guy? Sick riff by the way
Too many! Thanks!
I like both but the Gibson is better
Yeah the Gibson is beautiful
O cara com as guitarras de 5.000 reais e a casa dele não tem reboco...
Este é meu porão
Timmy was fullest I think. Cool comparison
Thanks! I pick the timmy every time
One of each please
Oh for sure!
The humbucker sounds muddy to my ears. I would go with the P90 if I do decide to finally get an electric. Thanks!
👍🏼👍🏼 I prefer the P90 too. However I probably could have EQ’ed the humbucker a bit better
Exactement ce qu'il me fallait. Merci !
You’re welcome!
Yamaha plays much better and sound is subjective
The Yamaha bats well about its price
They both sound good although I like the sound of the LesPaul better at times. It sounds brighter.
Yeah. I especially like the LP’s neck pickup
hi John, can you please confirm whether the frededges are rolled ? thank you
Yes they are. Quite nicely too
@johnfalzon thank you
There's no answer as guitar would suit a different song better. 😎
Absolutely!
I've a Thinline, but Cabronita sound better for me.
I can’t pick a winner. I love both
This guy obviously has more money than talent. He owns some very nasty guitars but he’s sure doesn’t play very well.
Thanks for watching! Couldn’t agree more
lol are you ok bud. Its a comparison video between guitars what are you expecting to happen.
@@johnfalzon John, just wanted to apologize to you for my comment. You have more guts than me. I play pretty well and I wouldn’t have the guts to post my playing on TH-cam.
