Economic Growth and Development |Lesson 2 :Difference between Economic Growth & Economic Development
This lesson explains the difference between the Economic Growth and Economic Development. It is relevant for other courses like BBA, Economics (hons), for the graduation and post graduation level and for competitive exams like CUET Economics, IAS economics optional, Indian Economic Service and the NET JRF Economics aspirants.
Economic growth and Economic development are two related but distinct concepts in the field of economics. While they are often used interchangeably, they have different meanings and implications.
Definitions:
1. Economic Growth: It refers to the an increase in the production of goods and services n an economy over a specific period. It is typically measured by the percentage change in a country's GDP or GNP
2. Economic Development: It encompasses a broader set of factors that go beyond mere GDP growth. It involves improvements in living standards, healthcare, education, infrastructure.
Focus:
1. Economic Growth: It primarily focuses on Quantitative Indicators such as GDP, employment rates and productivity. It emphasises increasing output and expanding the size of the economy.
2. Economic Development: It places a broader emphasis on qualitative aspects of societal progress. It focuses on improving the overall well-being and quality of life for individual, ensuring sustainable development, reducing inequality and addressing social and environmental challenges.
Factors:
1. Economic Growth: It is driven by factors such as increased investment, technological advancements, productivity gains, infrastructure development and expansion of trade.
2. Economic Development: it takes into account wide range of factors, including social, cultural, political and environmental considerations. It involves investments in human capital, healthcare, education, social infrastructure, poverty alleviation, environmental protection and institutional reforms.
Distribution of Benefits:
1. Economic Growth: It does not guarantee equitable distribution of benefits. It can lead to income disparities, unequal wealth distribution, and social economic inequalities.
2. Economic Development: It aims to ensure that the benefits of growth are shared more inclusively across society. It focuses on reducing poverty, enhancing social welfare, and promoting a more equitable distribution of income and resources.
Long-Term Sustainability:
1. Economic Growth: It can be unsustainable if ti leads to environmental degradation, depletion of natural resources or disregard for social well being.
2. Economic Development: It places a strong emphasis on sustainability, striving for a balance between economic progress, social well-being, and environmental conservation. It aims to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Thus, Economic Growth and Economic Development are related concepts but economic development goes beyond mere economic growth by considering a broader range of factors and focussing on achieving sustainable, inclusive and equitable progress for society as a whole.

25:01 *In case of perfect competition there will be high markup as everyone is offering the same price and one who offers a high markup will get more profit. So, to compete in markets the firm's or entities offer high markup And in monopoly there will be low markup because of being alone in the competition one will provide low markup or even no markup* Tell me if it is right.!?
