"The Evolutionary Reason Why 40% of American Adults feel Stress Due to Politics" - Dr Kevin Smith
My daughter has face blindness. She could not recognize classmates or teachers. She also has autism so she leads a lonely life.
I’m sorry to hear that, from what I learnt from Sadie it won’t always be like that. I wish you the best of luck ❤️
This was a good episode. Shes very interesting! i've had a lot of those moments where i do locate "friend shaped person" in huge crowds faster than people who need a face to find someone. People have distinctive walks and mannerisms that are super easy to spot a personality. Shows like the MaskedSinger wouldn't work on me if i knew at all the person in my personal life.
Sadie is the absolute best, I loved our conversation and glad you enjoyed as well!
I have a mild version of this. It made me a terrible waitress. I now approach everyone I meet as if I know them and remember them fondly. It's to save me from unintentionally hurting anyone's feelings, but it just makes me seem super friendly 😂
I have never heard a debate on the liberal brain vs. conservative brain that was anything other than pure conjecture. The very concept of liberal vs. conservative seems like a false dichotomy. How do you define either of these in an objective sense? Liberal from many years ago would be considered conservative by today's standards. It seems that time plays a bigger role in the definition of conservative than any real political ideology. When I hear the word "conservative," all that comes to my mind is "old fashioned."
I understand what you’re and we do go more in depth on how these terms are defined the longer form episode. The way these studies tend to do it is long multi question surveys on political issues like abortion, immigration etc. Participants are given scores based on answers and usually these scores correlate very well with morphological brain differences. It sounds washy but it’s actually very well replicated science. Check out the long form episode if interested!
Given the current state of society, is the individual more or less likely to embrace a change than the average member of the group? Abortion is a terrible measure because pro-life represents rule based morality, while pro-choice represents the utilitarian view. This is neither a progressive nor conservative stance. The only reason you see a divide along party lines is the US is a 2 party system.
The problem that young conservative men face in a global culture is their inability to fulfill the instinctive drive to find a clearly defined group to belong to, which leaves them feeling endangered. "Virtual groups" (mediated by the internet) are insufficient to satisfy this need. Access to a group must be established through rites of passage. The effect of influencers is quite pernicious because they emphasize that women are not part of their group and must be dominated. Failing to satisfy two vital instinctual drives-social belonging and sexual activity-results in highly dissatisfied individuals who are extremely vulnerable to manipulation.
A conservative is an individual who needs the security of belonging to a clearly defined group. The common expression of this trait is racism, xenophobia, and misogyny (strangely, there are men who consider women not to be part of their group). They tend to keep the gene pool closed. Their empathy only extends to those in their group, and they only recognize injustices suffered by that group. A progressive, on the other hand, is someone who does not limit their empathy to a specific group and is willing to risk cooperating with unknown individuals. They do not restrict the gene pool. They are more adventurous. In my opinion, these types of behaviors reflect different neurological patterns (to some degree), and I assume that a balance of these types of individuals favored survival during our evolution. But this is just a hypothetical interpretation.
What does being very bothered by injustice correlate to? This doesn’t really seem very related to fear response.
We can only hypothesise how they fit together. The research can only state what facts get born out of the methodology but we are simply hypothesising from there about how the pictures fit together.
The use of the vague term 'injustice' shows group identity. It relies on connotations specific to the group. A centrist would use descriptive language instead. Because of tribal specific word meanings it could be either. A criminal being pardoned is considered an injustice from the conservative perspective because it increases risk. Whereas a child being fed too much fast food is considered an injustice from the progressive perspective because it limits the child's potential.
My impression is that conservatives are no longer attentive to dangers in the environment. Most conservatives reject all forms of regulation or environmental care. What conservatives are attentive to is the presence of individuals who do not belong to their group. That is what they fear. To address this, they arm themselves and train. Yes, it is out of fear of external groups. This heightened attention corresponds to fear.
I think there’s definitely an element of this yeah
I've been both.
So have I! These differences are probabilities
“You could be completely predisposed to be a conservative and still rationally think your way into being a liberal. . . . And yeah uh . . Vice versa” 😂😂😂 7:18
Important to double state just in case 🤣
Define "liberal".
Big government.
@@GiantsShoulderClips that's not what "liberal" means
It means bias towards change here, so not Democrats. Also, the unconstrained world view.
@@GiantsShoulderClips that's not what "liberal" means.
@@GiantsShoulderClips That's not liberal. Stop allowing the leftists and globalists to redefine words.
Don't. Just don't. Seriously? Phrenology? Might as well say conservatives tend to be virgos and liberals scorpios. "Purely speculative" is right. These people should be held accountable for spreading this nonsense.
Comparison with phrenology is ignorant and completely inappropriate. These are well replicated findings again and again that show correlations between brain regions and political dispositions. Phrenology was complete garbage pseudoscience used to discriminate against races of people and wasn’t supported by any data. You can’t compare them.
@GiantsShoulderClips "well replicated findings"? What findings? Cite them. Don't just roll over on an appeal to authority fallacy if you can't even cite the Authority you are deriving from.
Makes me wonder if one of them are more drawn to horror movies than the other.
Very interesting question. I’m not sure if that research has been done.
Conservatives are sponges for conspiracy theories, they are why my children have a bleak future. It takes a special kinda genius to think you know more about the climate because of a meme than a scientist working in the field.
Important to state “some conservative” are sponges for conspiracy this is also very much for the case for “some liberals”. I’m not sure you could say a particular disposition has a greater affinity for conspiracy theories, at least I haven’t seen any data to support that idea.
@@GiantsShoulderClips I wasn’t asking your opinion.
@@Rac-FPV-m4o ok haha
Haha wow there's an actual difference in the brain 🧠 mental
Wow that does seem a very inefficient way for our brains to do that, super interesting ❤
A great quote to remember “Nothing makes sense in biology expect in the light of evolution”.
00:50, important discussion. Threat sensitivity. After the opiod epidemic, and the 16 trillion dollar hit to the american economy from the 'horrible thing' it does seem that there was a reasonable conclusion that the transfer of power from government to experts and private equity was a threat to economic sovereignty . That sensitivity to threat was reasonable. OWID.. our world in data and oxfam both reported on the data and outcome, rather than jingoistic mantra's.
I like the "foundational vs. contextual" distinction. A liberal looks at a snake and decides it is not as threatening as a lion. The conservative ponders that either one can kill. The conservative tends to return repeatedly to the base beliefs upon which his decisions are made. Liberals who do this end up with conclusions like those of J.P. Sartre. In Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" the liberal professor had concluded "nothing is anything." The conservative had concluded "everything is something."
Very interesting insight, thank you for leaving the comment 🙏
I like this too, because I'm immediately drawn to say "a foundation is also a context" which I bet would drive some people crazy, while others say "yeah exactly." Uncertainty seems more interesting for liberals and more anxiety-inducing for conservatives.
This analysis has anti-conservative bias. Conservatives are aware of the difference between snakes and a lion because conservatives are more detail oriented. If anything, the liberal mindset uses more abstract reasoning. A liberal would say it is worth the risk to walk by the lion to hunt the snake for dinner. Whereas, the conservative would consider the benefit of snake meat is not worth the risk. The conservative would maintain the status quo of no snake dinner.
Notice the "liberal' use of the word "speculative" in this video. Basically, it means the individuals speaking here are just shooting the breeze.
@@earwasel2-c2j You sound like a conservative "if you aren't completely certain, then nothing means anything."
The various experiences of life eventually cancel each other out, leaving you. You see this everywhere.
Interesting idea. Can you give an example?
Love this clip, including your own contributions. I been subliminally aware of this phenomenon for some time and this explanation is very clarifying.

Sounds freeing.
Right? I think in a lot of ways it probably is. Although important not to glorify it as this particular case was very difficult for the people around Clive.
