Bach Hymnbook
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 มี.ค. 2023
The Bach Hymnbook presents singable translations of every chorale that J S Bach used in his vocal and instrumental works. The chorales are given in four-voiced score, underlaid with new translations in modern English alongside the original German words. Chorales 1 - 300 present the first stanza of every chorale text found in Bach's works, in alphabetical order by chorale title. Chorales 301 - 535 present chorales as found in Bach's vocal works, which usually call for an internal stanza, and are arranged by BWV number. The performers are Rebecca Davy, organist and choirmaster of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, a building completed during Bach's lifetime, and Thomas Marshall, University Organist at William & Mary, an institution founded in 1693. A new video has launched each weekday, beginning on Bach's birthday in 2023. Additional stanzas, search indexes, and other information can be found on the companion website www.bachhymnbook.org

One of my favorites! "Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with His love he befriend thee".
And by provichance, perfectly timed to launch on Thanksgiving Day!
Powerful words!
Indeed.
Singing with the angels- what a beautiful thought!
Thanks for listening and reading! For more angels, see today's chorale (428) and the credits photo-----a 12th-c vision of the nine orders of angels, by Hildegard von Bingen
Amen!
Timely as ever.
brains are so weird, how did i instantly know the final image was assisi after being there once
☺
"Go away vanities - I seek what is true" are very important words. Thanks for these hymns. They are beautiful AND meaningful.
Thank you for your attentive listening and reading!
@@BachHymnbook1750 And thank you for taking the time and effort to post these amazing songs!
Thanks to alert viewer Márk Szabó from Hungary for catching a notation typo in the earlier version of this video.
Hello Advanced Conducting students
Martin Jason Clark Maria Walker Ruth
What’s the difference
Thanks to your organ performance, I could sing with it. The text is Latin (O esca viatorum): th-cam.com/users/shorts_tjws38Ee3k?si=wck0GY2kl40VNXMV
I hate to be that guy but an e flat is played in the first measure instead of e natural. Nice chorale nevertheless.
Check out the key signature
@@harvestedvoltage4324Yes, there is e flat in the key signature, but there is a natural written out in the first measure (in the bass, beat 3)
@ Ah, I was looking at the alto line and did not even think to look at the bass. However, the bass line played is markedly different from what is written - I think that the sheet music is for a slightly different of the chorale, and the recording itself is from the original. Good ear anyhow.
@@harvestedvoltage4324 I, too, think it is not a mistake, but rather a difference in editions. Even after studying music theory and composition for years, it does not cease to amaze me how vast of a difference a single semitone shift can make in the resulting music.
This is one of the most comical translations I've ever seen. Is it intentional that the English is so far removed from the original German? I cannot see what state of mind someone would have to be in to translate "Oh God, how much heartache" to "my heartbreak is my load".
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to sing with the video and upload to my channel?
Sure! Just be sure to credit the source of the score as The Bach Hymnbook, and credit the translator for whichever chorale you're singing. The translator is listed in the end credits of each video, and there are different ones for different chorales, so be sure you have the correct one for that chorale. Thanks for your interest in Bach chorales!
@@BachHymnbook1750 Thank you very much. I may sing in German. In that case, it seems no translator credit.
@@gachongeem146 Correct. It would be good form, though, to credit the composer and author of the original German chorale. You can find this information on the Bach Hymnbook website (www.bachhymnbook.org/introduction-page) by clicking on the "See Chorale Scores" circle.
Justo lo que necesitabas Muchas Gracias
Gracias por todo. Desde Buenos Aires un abrazo de oso
This tune is auf meinen lieben gott
Yes; as is common among hymns, both chorale texts share the same tune. For many more such examples, see the 'Index by Melodic Shape' on the Bach Hymnbook website.
Otro para mí Gracias de corazón
Herzlich willkommen!
I think I know this tune differently
Ruth and Tom - fine realization of excellent music!

Gracias!
Thanks for sharing, very nice.
I think if this song is played in e minorband there almost no c major notes there should be two sharp thingies before each line of music notes musical notes
Very observant! Nevertheless, the chorale really is in e minor, hence the one-sharp key signature. The many C#'s you rightly noticed are the legacy of this melody's ancient roots, first as the plainchant "Victimae paschali laudes" (from a thousand [!] years ago), and then from its 1524 adaptation, in the early years of the Reformation, as a chorale, which, like the chant it's based on, was in the dorian mode. For further reading, start with the Wikipedia articles about "Victimae paschali" and "Christ lag in Todesbanden." Check out also Bach Hymnbook 34, "Christ ist erstanden," which is derived from the same plainchant. And thanks for listening, and watching, so intently!
Like nr 300 this is a very good thema too.
Perfecto Maravilloso muchas gracias por tu t
Perhaps one of the best themas.
Yes, and Bach apparently thought so too, since he used this tune more often than any other chorale melody!
Bien bien. Muchas gracias

Good ear! Yes, it's exactly the same melody. Then as now, well-loved tunes attracted more than one set of words. If you're curious about this, the companion website, bachhymnbook.org, has tune information for every chorale.
Magnificent.
Thank you! This was the chorale that inspired the project, the one that "launched a thousand stanzas"
Great playing Love all of these videos
Thanks for a good rendering in English of my most favorite Weihnachtslied. Did you know that Nancy and Martin made a translation and choral setting for my church?
Herzlich vielen Dank!
Thanks Ruth for highlighting the duple and triple meter of these hymns. Your research and diligence in these works are so illuminating...and admired.
A votre service!
A beautiful thought and hymn. Thank you for making this past year special with these wonderful hymns and connections.
Thanks for listening!
thank you so much for your splendid work and best wishes for a blessed NEW YEAR.
Hetzelfde! ; - )
Nice discovery. A favorite subject of mine.
Looked and looked for something like this and in this lifetime I have found it...thank you so much!!!
I too had searched for this (all the Bach chorale texts, and in singable modern English). I kept hoping somebody else would do it. After fifty years of not finding it, I finally decided to do it myself!
Love the hurricane photo!
(And the music, of course!)
The idea was the Holy Spirit as "a mighty wind" but another alert reader made the even more apt connection of the Spirit "moving over the face of the waters" in Genesis!
@@BachHymnbook1750 Excellent!
Such a beautiful piece. So rich.
Such lush flowing harmonies. Effortless.
