This brings back memories! When I sang with the Arizona Opera Co. 35 years ago, I was one of the 6 women who came out to sing that bit at the beginning of Act 3. I had the flu and fever of 104, but of course, no understudies for choristers. So - The show must go on! I sang my bit and went home. It's a cherished memory.

Wow! I went to school with John Osborn. He won the Metropolitan Opera auditions at age 22, and he has had a 30+ year international operatic career. He sings like Di Stefano reborn. John Ames is an amazing opera singer!

Anyone who thinks C2 isn't a low note has never sang one without amplification. That is incredibly impressive. B1 is my lowest open-air note and I doubt I could even muster Mr. Ames' projection... which is why I am a choral bass singer and he is a basso profundo.

You are such an amazing talent! What a beautiful natural voice you have and lush soaring high notes!

I’ve been watching a bunch of live versions of this moment and notice that the audience love applauding before the music ends. I guess there are some reasons why. First is that the singing ends 10 seconds before the music and to most people the singing is waaaaay more important than the instruments, and there’s something about the 3rd last note that is a major trigger. Second, and probably more important, although this isn’t the end of the opera, it is the end of Papageno’s arc, and a happy one at that especially as just earlier he thought about ending it all. So it’s more than the music as to why they love clapping before it ends.
