Boyle - Thou, O God, art praised in Sion (with lyrics)
Thou, O God, art praised in Sion,
And unto Thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem.
Thou that hearest the prayer,
Unto Thee shall all flesh come.
Blessed is the ma whom Thou choosest and receivest unto Thee.
He shall dwell in Thy courts and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of Thy house,
Ev’n of Thy holy temple.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stay’d on Thee.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace because he trusted in Thee.
Trust ye in the Lord forever, for in the Lord, the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.
Let the people praise Thee, O God, yea, let all the people praise Thee.
Then shall the earth bring forth her increase: and God shall give us His blessing.

Hello! So, it's a real organ or a virtual organ? I don't understand, sorry I'm french
Hi! Thanks for watching. It’s a real organ, but this recording was made for online church services during the pandemic. You can see a general view of the whole instrument at 0:54.
@@sambarbermusic Thanks. I'm not a fan of commons english organs which are very english sound type, and also because reeds are always discreet. Here in France reeds are also powerful, but true, not always refined. But this organ is very beautiful, very fine. I see the tutti on the hymn Come ye thankful people come, it's incredible. He is not so famous yet, I'm wrong?
@@Jrmy6012 I’m a big fan of the exciting French reeds - I’ve found some usefully ugly sounds on some instruments! This organ is one of a handful of excellent organs across Huddersfield.
Recently saw Dr. Gordon Turk perform this in Ocean Grove, NJ - it was like 12 minutes long and super loud! Great piece, thanks for the recording.
Thanks for listening!
A new piece to me, and very interesting. Great to see the organ again. I learned to play at Halifax many years ago under Philip Tordoff.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Schön gespielt, ich habe gerade die Erstausgabe dieses Stückes vor mir liegen, tolle Orgel, Respekt. Gefällt mir sehr gut, muss nicht immer Bach sein. Danke
Danke schön!
Thank you for this ! (not too many separated on TH-cam, as Lento Antiphon #3, Antiphon 5, or especially all of the four Ave Maris Stella, +Magnificat 1&6)
BRAVO!!! And LOL Thank you for sharing that.
Thanks James!
I took lessons from Philip Tordoff at Halifax on this magnificent Harrison. This was early 1970s. A truly wonderful instrument. The price for rehearsal usage was 50pence an hour. I remember the small notice that requested practice be kept to smaller stop settings! A truly awesome “orchestral” Harrison...I look back with real fondness and total admiration for Philip Tordoff.
@Thomas Tidswell - From memory the notice still exists explaining the 50p per hour practice rate! Glad you had a nice time playing it and studying with Philip. I believe there are plans in the pipeline to restore it back to it's original Edwardian condition which will be an exciting project. Thanks for watching! Sam
@@sambarbermusic I. Had about 2 years of lessons with Philip and David Barker. We used to go to recitals around and about. I was the driver. Philip never drove in his life. I remember graphically how, at the end of a lesson Philip would ask if I would like him to play something. Philip’s ability was terrific. He would play a piece from the music and it was in his memory. I gather he retired recently due to arthritis. A true gentleman. Your a very fine player.
I too had lessons from David Barker - and I loved the organ at St. Paul, King Cross. The minster organ is glorious and matched by the building. Really should have been the cathedral! Philip Tordoff is a wonderful man. @@thomastidswell7310
Should also have said @sambarbermusic great performance.
Lovely rendition. Yes much more to the point in its original voice. I’m of a multicultural background. Proud to include French among them. I like hearing the musical traditions of my familial languages. I imagine what it’s like when they spoke them. I do have a relationship with the French language. Didn’t want to embarrass my last name.
Thanks for listening! Merry Christmas
Alucinante......! Gracias.....
Once I went to England and stayed there for a while and went for a haircut. I am an organist, so I was carrying my music sheets around. An old gentleman looked at those and said, "I know a barber who is also a terrific organist." I didn't believe him but today I can agree that he was right. 👍👌😂
Haha, @Viki K that’s very kind! Thanks for watching!
really awesome, well done! 👌
Thanks a lot!
Matthew Locke is psychedelic rock. Raised third at the end has freaked me out for 40 years.
It's funky isn't it! Thanks for watching 😀
@aaa@aaaaff*6th
Très belle sonorité 💓👍
Merci beaucoup!
Admirable corporal calm and concentration. The shades of Thomas Tallis are looking down, no doubt benignly, on you. Should the tempo of the Prelude and Fugue be identical? Could either one or the other be more brilliant? More majestic? Could one imagine the Prelude as a Prelude to the service and the Fugue as a Postlude? A service of Praise? Thanks? Contemplation? Regret? Prayerfulness? Exuberance?
Come now, Saviour of the Gentiles. With a Doxology of Praise. An Advent hymn like Come, thou long-expected Jesus. One often wonders why at least half of the organists who interpret this beautiful prelude do so at a plodding pace based on quaver pulsation rather than crotchets. It's as if Jesus is reluctant to arrive in this wicked world!! Does this slow tempo encourage the congregation to sing a first verse after the prelude? Please receive all my encouragement.
I have always prefered this to the other one. Lovely playing.
Thanks so much, John!
Beautiful 👌👏👏
Thanks a lot! 😊
Excellent playing, Sam!
Thanks a lot, Mitch!

Well played, sounds very good on this organ. Thanks!
Thanks a lot Ralph!

Very virtuoso and smooth. Lovely!
Thanks Daan! I appreciate that!
La bas, "Jingle Bells," _c'est_ une chanson de Noël! Seriously, if I never heard that stupid song again... It doesn't mention Christmas, Jesus, or even _Santa Claus. (BTW, I'm not sure the English words do Cantique de Noël justice; the French seems more reverent.) Joyeaux Noël! Stay safe, tout le Monde.
Happy Christmas to you too!
Beautiful. A wonderful Christmas treat: thank you!
Thanks Graham!
Stunning playing!
Thank you, Philip!
Nice music
Thanks for watching Willem!
Fabulous - a real Christmas treat! I see from Dr Baker's website that he is heavily influenced by the 'French School' and you can certainly hear that in this wonderful composition - a real 'tour de force' for any organist! Of course, Sam, your performance is stunning and flawless and you certainly register the piece very skilfully on the Brentwood Cathedral organ, achieving quite convincing 'French' timbres. It's good to see you on top form . . . maybe you'll be able to get to France in 2021 and play this on a Cavaille-Coll organ: that would be a recording I'd love to hear!
Thanks for your kind comment Graham. I’d enjoy making such a recording once we’re allowed to do that sort of thing again!
Beautiful. It's been over four months since you last posted an organ performance (!) so it is wonderful to hear you play again . . . and especially this exquisite chorale prelude by Bach. You have it perfectly registered on Brentwood Cathedral organ and as ever, your videography is superb Thank you.
Thanks Graham - it's been a busy few months, but nice to play for pleasure now there's slightly more time! I hope you're doing really well, and that you have a happy Christmas, Sam
@@sambarbermusic Thank you very much, Sam. I hope you have a lovely Christmas, too, and that 2021 is a much better year for you and all organists and musicians! (I did leave a message back in October for you via Facebook Messenger . . . but it does not look like you ever saw it.)
Fantastic playing, thank you. I'm planning to use it at our Socially-Distanced carol service this year - it's great to hear it being played properly !!! :-) Brilliant.
Thank you so much! Have a great carol service!! Sam
I was literally just trawling through youtube looking for a decent original french version with the english translation to post on my advent playlist, thanks for recording guys!
No way! Thanks for watching, and hope you’re having a great time up with your folks!!
Such a magnificent song! Not just my favorite Christmas song..."Oh Holy Night" is my favorite song whether it's in French or English!
Thanks so much! It's one of our favourites too, especially April's English translation. Thanks for watching!
@@sambarbermusic You're welcome!
Amazing!!!
Thanks Craigan! We enjoyed making them!
This is a lovely version of this carol! Beautifully sung and played - thanks for sharing!
Wow, Sam - that was absolutely FABULOUS! I must confess that this is the first time I have heard this Durufle Fugue and what a gorgeous piece of music it is! But those black dots on white paper have to be brought to life and you do that in a performance that is totally stunning. This Lewis organ is now one of my firm favourites and your recordings are also at the top of my hit list. I've commented on your amazing videography before, but what I love about your editing here is that we get to see your face in a few shots and in those moments we can sense your total connection with the music and that enables the listener/watcher to totally connect as well. I sometimes think the reason why organ music has 'limited' appeal is because the audience sometimes never even sees the performer . . . or at best, just his or her back! The solo violinists/pianists/flautists etc gets to face their audience, so it's wonderful to see your face in this performance. (And, in the eyes of this old man, you are just as handsome as is Durufle's music!)
What treat! Fabulous playing of WD's Interlude on the most gorgeous of Lewis organs. Your registration choices throughout were wonderful, Sam, and the videography on this recording is of a professional standard. What a multi-talented young man you are!
Evening Chap 👍🏼 , ya pops posted Mē this. Excellent maestro 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼 . Kind of getting into this music having never previously given much thought. 👍🏼👍🏼👌🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼
I first heard this toccata in a recording by Noel Rawsthorne from Liverpool long before you were born, Sam! Noel played it brilliantly, but the vast acoustic of the Cathedral did not afford the toccata the clarity that you manage here with this excellent recording, Your playing is tremendous - virtuoso in every sense and the Lewis organ is fabulous for delivering the sheer exuberance of the music. Admiration for your mastery of technique poses the difficulty of finding words that do you justice - but I am in total awe and look forward to your next posting!
Beautiful hymn, even moreso as a daily prayer. Thank you and God bless!
Thank you very much! I’m sorry that I didn’t see your comment sooner! It is a beautiful hymn!
A master enjoying his work!
Thank you!
This is a wonderful performance of the Elegy in F (sadly neglected because of the popularity of the Bb Elegy) and the Lewis organ is just perfect to express its English sentiment. A masterful interpretation and more exquisite playing from you, Sam. One could be almost glad that coronavirus 'forced' you to make so many recordings as I, for one, cannot have enough of them! Well done.
Wonderful, Sam.
👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 : Sure as heck wish i had this musical skills Bravo maestro 👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
Used at Holy Trinity Huddersfield at Evening Prayer, Sunday July 19th.
This video made a lovely start to the day. I watched it very early this morning just as the sun was rising and seeing the images of sunrise over London was a great visual accompaniment to the music. Well done!
Not only is your performance of this Vierne on this tremendous Lewis Organ simply stunning, Sam, but your videography is equally impressive! A total visual and aural treat. Without the 'lockdown', I suspect that this wonderful recording would not exist. So, something really good out of something utterly terrible. Bravo!
Thanks Graham! It's been wonderful working out the basics of video editing during lockdown - I certainly wouldn't have the chance before Covid-19! At the moment the visuals are all filmed on my phone/iPad propped on a music stand, so i'd love to experiment with a someone filming on a nicer camera at some point too if I can get my hands on one!
I do not know the music of A Herbert Brewer, but this is a gem! And perfect for covid lockdown as we have all been experiencing 'solitude'. If only the music ran for four minutes rather than two as it is so gorgeous!
