They're called Boarding Schools in England and they still exist today! Sexual abuse happened there in the past and kids are still traumatized by being separated from family at a young age. Boys homes for orphans were rife with sexual exploitation by elite social/political corrupt classes.

I find it difficult that the indigenous people are always portrayed as this eutopian, peaceful societies that we came and slaughtered. I'm not saying that every nation was as violent, just as I don't think every "white man" was responsible for how they were treated.

I’m a French teacher in the United States and I support you. My grandmother told me stories about her great grandmother who was Indigenous. I don’t know which band she was from because it wasn’t talked about. Where I live in West Virginia, it was ILLEGAL for any Indigenous to own land until the 1960s. I know that I have no rights to call myself indigenous, please don’t misinterpret what I am saying. On my own I have tried to learn about indigenous cultures in general and I am very saddened to learn about the abuses. I am sad to learn about the missionaries condemning the beautiful relationship that the indigenous have with the Creator and the Earth. I teach my students about Orange Shirt Day and the cultural genocide propagated by the colonials. My heart breaks for those children stolen from their families who return broken and those who never made it home. Every. Child. Matters.

After hearing this story again, I have become more clear on what I must do. I am in the process of ordering 100 or more orange shirts that I was planning to sell and give away, however the selling part was bothering me. Instead of putting a price on them I believe, to honor this story, I must give them to anyone that wants one. Since I live below the poverty line, I would be limited in what I can do, so to allow others to help, I will take donations from those taking the shirts so I can make more available to others. Thankyou Phyllis Webstad for sharing this story and being such and inspiration to us all.

Lots of holes in her story. The nuns were gone by the time she was staying at St Joseph's which was converted to a student hostel, and she went to public school at William's Lake. Some of the staff were Indigenous and they may have taken her shirt and returned it when she left a year later, or it might not have fit her anymore and was passed on to a smaller child.

I don't know that anyone says that. But how far back would you like to go here? There are countries TODAY that are committing crimes FAR worse than this, how often do you "lose it" on these people? How often do you buy products made from the forced labour of these indigenous peoples? There's ignorant and then there's indignant. You can fix ignorance if you choose to, but everybody suffers when you insist on only believing the facts that support your bias.

Thank you for your story Phyllis and I can't imagine the horrors you and others have lived. The orange shirt has not only made your stories accessible for adults, but especially for my and others' children, with whom I've shared your story. Since telling them, my daughter often speaks about it, listens to First Nations music, watches traditional dances, etc. One colour reached the entire nation and has been the most effective tool to have us connect. You are loved.

It is HER story, I believe she is telling it exactly as she remembers it. I dont believe she is trying to mislead anyone. We can look up history, even history is how someone remembers it. The sadness of how many children were treated is not nullified by finding "holes" in someones story vs memory.

@@deband4 In a CBC kids interview Phylliss Webstad stated "The Mission(formerly St. Joseph's) was the place where we slept and ate. When I attended in 1973, there were 272 students in total, boys and girls. All of the students were bussed into Williams Lake to attend public school, about 20 minutes away. ... I liked my teacher there, she had crazy red curly hair, she smelled good, and she was kind - I wished she could take me home with her."

  • @daveistrading

Her story is not factual. It was impossible for Nuns to take away her shirt, all Nuns had left the school years before she was there. Actually, a Native person probably took her orange shirt to be cleaned and later returned to her. Why doesn't she mention that 9% of the teaching staff at residential schools were indigenous by 1961? In fact, her teacher remembers her as a happy student. Why don't they interview her? In another interview, she tells how her Native mother and White father abandoned her, She was raised by her grandmother, and her Native uncles beat her when she was at the reservation. If you want Truth and reconciliation you have to tell the entire truth and interview everyone.

Re:comment: Jesus Christ Almighty God will be the real authentic judge in every single case/situation/experience. Nobody’s gonna be left out feeling like they haven’t really been heard. Jesus Christ is hearing you in ways that you may not even be aware of. Re: all the people who have been lost & hurt by hate > I can understand it in my own way! It’s brutal! The orange ‘T’ shirt will be around for as long as you let it. Yet; think about this: your precious loved one is sleeping soundly. 😴it’s virtually impossible for anyone’s loved one to see or hear or know anything under the sun! They’re literally at peace! You’re the ones living still & think that wearing an orange T-shirt will make a difference; maybe it will. But with the devil showing his true colours like he did in those residential schools that was absolute evil. The Catholic Church was involved in that, I’ve learned about that, that’s sickening to say the least. I’m deeply sorry for your losses no 2 ways about it. Hate is also connected with Satan the Devil; thus evil! There’s NO WAY this would have occurred with Jesus Christ. He’s having to allow the Devil to show up all his ugliness so that nobody can say that they didn’t understand! Line up with Jesus Christ & you won’t be sorry! 🙏Blessings to all of you!

I agree 100%!!! Bring back the religion of the Native American people to be integrated into American schools. The country lacks religion, and religion NEEDS to be taught in schools. Which religion though? Islam? Judaism? Christianity? Hinduism? Buddhism? Taoism? Etc. The ONLY rightful and ethical religion to ever be taught on American soil, would be whatever religions the Native Americans practice, before the violent European terrorists invaded and was responsible for the Native American HOLOCAUST murdering, r@ping, giving illness to HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of Native Americans throughout the Americas. And then after invading the Americas, forcefully made the Native Americans to change their religion, culture, and language, and even pushed them out of their own land into reserves. Yes, I agree 100% that religion NEEDS to be in schools. But because there's so many different religions, the only ethical religion to be taught in American schools would to give justice to the Native Americans and have them teach the religions they practice. Look up "Residential schools graves", it's about hundreds or may even be thousands unmarked graves for babies and children found at the Residential schools that the Christians tried to force religion onto Nagive children. The Christian Preists would SA, R@pe, impregnate and then murder the babies, beat and malnourish, mentally and emotionally abuse the Native children. Religion can be a power trip, and I can see how Narcassists will go become a religious leader, so they can control others to abuse them, even murder then, and continue to get away with it, by hiding behind their religion. So yes, religion ought to be taught in schools. But if any religion to be ethical to teach in schools based off the horrific holocaust of the Natives by the hands of the European terrorists, it should be Native American religions to be taught in schools. Another alternative idea, is to teach the basics of the major religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism Buddhism, etc). But take religions and God out of the teaching, just the name only (Allah, Jesus, Shiva, Buddha, etc). Example teaching the commandments, though shall not kill, cheat, lie, greed, envy, etc. Can still teach those things without mentioning a name. Religions do provide a great sense of morals and values, and it should be incorporated into schools. But with so many religions, the only rightful religion would be Native American religion, or just the teachings of multiple religions without using any names.

The entire world grieves with you and every child who has lived through this most horrendous attempt of cultural genocide, Phyllis. We are horrified at what's taken place and at how very many babies were stolen from their mother's loving arms to attend these torture chambers of "education". I live in Newfoundland on the West coast and my dad was French/Indian Miq'maw. We didn't have the residential schools in Newfoundland, thank God, but the racism and torture at the hands of the sister of 'no' mercy were none the less felt by Indigenous and french-speaking students. We share in your grief for the lost and tortured babies. Much love and heart felt empathy. Thank you for sharing your story and lighting the world on fire. God Bless you and every Indigenous person who has suffered so very much.
