Kazakhstan, Karaganda - Walking from Suyunshi monument to Anet-Baba Mosque
It’s time for some Karaganda! We already walked its streets on a couple of occasions:
th-cam.com/video/5LyXOdVM_aA/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/hBX7SVR3QEk/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/XZDvwde_ETo/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/JBLhfWkti-0/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/etu01Xehis0/w-d-xo.html
but for the most part it remains unexplored by us. Today we are going to visit the South-Eastern part of Kazibekbyskiy District. The walk will start at the Suyunshi monument and end near the entrance to the Anet-Baba Mosque. Let’s go!
0:00 - Start of the walk. We are standing at the corner of Universitet St and Prikanalnaya St. Suyunshi monument can be seen across the road.
00:36 - Crossing the street to get to the monument.
00:45 - Suyunshi monument. It’s a popular place among the newlyweds. The monument has a special pedestal with slots for palms. Newlyweds put their hands on the pedestal - and the Wedding March starts playing. In theory. People say, it doesn’t work anymore and I didn’t have any newlyweds with me to check.
1:21 - Decorations dedicated to the ninetieth anniversary of Karaganda.
2:17 - Symbols of the animals from the Kazakh zodiac. Reminded me of the weathervane in Astana: th-cam.com/video/WMye_OyAkVU/w-d-xo.html.
3:13 - The pedestal for newlyweds.
3:49 - Anet-Baba Mosque can be seen in the distance.
4:22 - Entering the Ethnopark named after the 10th anniversary of Independence of Kazakhstan.
8:09 - A fountain, only partially functional.
9:00 - Statues of musical instruments and musicians around the fountain.
10:00 - Statue of a dancing woman, surrounded by… kobyzes. Yes, that’s what it is.
10:47 - Reconciliation Bench! We’ve seen one of those in Astana: th-cam.com/video/Qo-XJVwKPmo/w-d-xo.html.
13:07 - Approaching Anet-Baba Mosque. We won’t go in, because I don’t want to intrude. We’ll just walk around.
And now, my walk has ended...
The walk took place on 25 August 2024.
Walker: Evgeniy.

Today we continue our exploration of the right embankment of the river Ishim. Our last walk in this series (th-cam.com/video/GXCzuK-Uf00/w-d-xo.html) ended near Shestitrubka, the isthmus connecting the right embankment to an island. Now it is time to visit the island itself. Sounds like fun, but there isn’t much going on there, to tell you the truth. The island is not completely deserted though...

Back to Astana! It’s getting really cold here. I guess they will shut down all the fountains some time soon - that’s why I had to re-shuffle all my walking plans and head straight to the Central Square of the Old Town without any further delay. For it could be my last chance to record its glorious fountains. Those fountains are especially spectacular during the evenings, because of all the craz...

Last week I was on the road and among other places briefly visited Almaty, the biggest city in Kazakhstan. I didn’t have much time, but that short stay was enough to remind me how much I love the region. I just love being able to see glorious mountain ranges at almost any time, the aryks, carrying white seething water from the glaciers, even those yellow-beaked birds (I always forget what they ...

It’s time for some more Karaganda! In this video I decided to walk from the industrial part of the town, where my hotel was located, to the center. One day, while in Karaganda, I decided to buy some kind of a book about the city. And I assumed, that there could be no better place to look for such a thing than the Local History Museum. We already walked the center of the city (th-cam.com/video/5LyXOdVM_aA/w-d-xo.html), so let's dive deep into the outskirts. But why did I chose this exact location? Today's walk is special. First of all, we introduce a new city, which is always nice, but the city itself is also special. Because it's Karaganda! What's so special about Karaganda?

Continuation of the description: 34:00 - A mural! This one is partially blocked by a parked car. Of course the car wasn't here a day ago, and won't be here tomorrow. It always happens when it is time to shoot a video. 36:08 - A very strange arch. 36:41 - A love message to Zhanna. 37:25 - A tight atmospheric passage. 38:29 - A promise of a sauerkraut. 38:35 - The sauerkraut is a lie. 39:29 - Another example of a bad luck. Here I wanted to show you a particularly interesting piping configuration, and what do you think? Alas, the place turned out to be occupied by a sad gentleman reflecting on his life choices. 40:00 - Corner of Aleksandr Kravtsov St and Takha Khusein St. 40:38 - Behind this fence the old Muslim cemetery Karaotkel is located. The first body was buried here in 1609. The last - in 1962. There are some monuments and balbals on its corner. Let's take a look.

Continuation of the description: 23:29 - Heading east on Otyrar St. 24:33 - Back to the yards, moving south. 24:42 - Local vendor is about to open his store. 25:25 - The fenced area to the right is a space for drying clothes, carpets and so on. Many backyards in Astana have this feature. I don't know if it was designed with this intent, but that's how people use it. We will encounter some more examples during this walk. 26:23 - Turning east. 27:29 - A mural. The authors are listed at the bottom of the mural. Someone partially blocked the names with AC unit. 27:59 - A better look a the mural. 28:32 - Another look. 28:51 - Final look. But the dog can't be seen from here. 29:05 - Moving west on Kenesary St. 29:24 - The restaurant to the right also has some drawings. Wasn't sure whether to include them in the video or not. 29:49 - Some man turned on a chainsaw, effectively ending my dilemma. 30:06 - Corner of Kenesary St and General Sabir Rakhimov St. We are going to head south. Into the backyards, of course! 31:20 - You see, these things are used for drying clothes for sure! 31:40 - That's our target, the second swan figure. This one in accompanied by improvised mushroom (younger generations, brace yourself) and a turtle. And now, my walk has ended... The walk took place on 1 June 2024. Walker: Evgeniy. Continuation of the description: 23:00 - Crazy-looking benches. 23:39 - Demalys Promenade is a pedestrian zone (on certain days). The Wikipedia quotes äkim Altai Kölgınov saying that this zone was built to dispel the stereotype that everything in the city is done for the left bank (which we almost didn't touch during our walks yet). 24:10 - Heading east on Abay Ave. 25:11 - A quote! This one is from Mayki Bi, but it is too hard for me to translate. 25:23 - A reminder that clean city starts with you. 25:28 - Corner of Abay Ave and Mukhtar Auezov St. 26:12 - Maybe people were much taller back in the day? Another hard to read tablet. This one is easy, though. It's dedicated to Mukhtar Auezov, just as the street itself. 27:10 - The word Saryarka on the lampposts is the name of the district. 28:23 - Corner of Abay Ave and Respublika Ave. 29:16 - Monument to the holodomor victims of 1932-1933. One of the most tragic periods in history of Kazakh people, a great famine, that they call "Ашаршылық" (Asharshylyk). The saddest part is that it probably could be avoided. Forced collectivization, requisition of grain from rural areas and many other questionable government policies resulted in this catastrophe. As for the monument itself, it definitely manages to convey a very uneasy, eerie feeling. And now, my walk has ended... The walk took place on 21 April 2024. Walker: Evgeniy.
