One of my best friends is Chamorro and I knew his family was from a tiny island but I never realized just how tiny until I looked it up. It’s crazy to think that every Chamorro person originated from this same 40 square mile island. Granted there’s very few of you but it’s still hard to believe. Like I really jog the length of this island on my morning run. Absolutely gorgeous I might add. Never knew how gorgeous it truly was. I feel like I got put on a hidden place that hasn’t been spoiled by tourists. From what I’ve heard from my friend though, there’s probably a bit of a fear by the locals of the Mariana islands becoming gentrified tourist traps like pretty much all of Hawaii is now. He told me that they’ve seen what has happened to Hawaii and don’t want that happening there so I probably won’t ever visit unless I go there with my friend. They see a mainlander there and think “oh god no, is this the day it starts happening?” All it would take is one dumb article blowing up about how unspoiled and gorgeous this place is to begin the process of ruining it so I totally understand the locals not wanting to see mainlanders there. Hawaii is the ultimate cautionary tale on this. Native Hawaiians get forced out by the day as the place basically turns into a economy that’s completely depending on tourism. The rise of housing and staple item prices go up hugely as a result of this and the people who were there before can’t afford to live in the place their ancestors have been for countless generations. It’s tragic.
