The judgement is laden in the decision to impose upon the Vietnamese people and inoculate their children without their permission. Our judgement permits us to do this because we have judged it to be the “right thing” to do. But in judging, we are not considering the opinion of the other. The Vietnamese people felt the horrors of this imposition and were able to flip it upon the Americans. In cutting off the arms of the children the Viet Cong are befriending horror in their unwavering will to self-determine. They are stating “we do not want you here” in the most explicit and direct way possible. Cutting through the very judgement that started the incursion in the first place. It is clearly an allegory for the Vietnamese War in totality. The US went in with the intention of “inoculating” Vietnam from communism. The Vietnamese people responded in no uncertain terms that they reject the intervention regardless of intent, and they will uphold their self-determination until their last breath.

One of the finest scenes on every level of any film ever created.

It is the realization that Americas wars are the true horror. And the true horror is how the American empire pretends to be moral yet we are the most amoral and evil empire that has ever existed. And it is WE THE PEOPLE, who have accepted this evil. That we, are not filled with love. That we kill, without question.

Considering what a colossal pain in the Brando was to this production… that confessional tied the whole thing together , such brilliance “ if I had 10 divisions of these men our troubles here would be over very quickly…” still sends chills up me spine !

Marlon Brando did not improvise this. Cast and crew have debunked that a million times.

It blows my mind that he improvised this dialogue. Not only is it beautifully written but it ties deeply into the themes of the film. This is basically the thesis statement, the central conflict of the story. Every story about Brando's involvement makes him sound like a lazy clown, but oh no. I think this scene is the heart of the film.

The Role of col kurtz is based loosely on green beret col Renault and the green beret affair, when Renault and four other berets were accused of killing a double agent operation Gamma project!

I always loved Martin sheen’s voice. It’s the unique raspiness that makes his characters gritty. Which is awesome 😂
