Unraveling a mysterious morning triple
When I first spotted the G3 Marquis in the lock, I had no idea that Argo had also found us two more ships! We also found the Saltie Volgaborg then finally see the James R. Barker below the lock, waiting their turn.

Two footers lined up for the lock, American Century and James R. Barker!
มุมมอง 220วันที่ผ่านมา
It isn't very often when two footers are tied up waiting for the lock, on the same end of the lock. This time both the American Century and James R. Barker were tied up above the lock, waiting to continue downbound. Radio feed: www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/38764 #soolocks #thesoo #stmarysriver #greatlakesshipping
The first time I've seen the John D Leitch this season
มุมมอง 24214 วันที่ผ่านมา
A very unusual looking ship which I always try to catch when they come through town. The John D. Leitch with the square ship forward superstructure and also a front unloading boom ship. I read on facebook that this would be their last trip across Superior but I don't know if that is true and why. A lovely summer day here in the Soo to greet the John G. Munson to the Soo! As usual, a crowd came out and we were all treated with a thunderous salute! Radio feed: www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/38764 #soolocks #thesoo #stmarysriver #greatlakesshipping
The second footer salute for the afternoon. This time from the Burns Harbor!

Just about 15 minutes prior to this, the James R Barker went by and treated us with a salute. I was not expecting a salute from the Burns Harbor so it was a great surprise! Radio feed: www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/38764 #soolocks #thesoo #stmarysriver #greatlakesshipping

มุมมอง 13421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Argo and his keen senses are always on the job, this time finding the tug Victory and her barge Maumee as they make their approach to the lock. It was a beautiful and calm sunrise. A lovely start to what turned out to be, a very crazy work week. Radio feed: www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/38764 #soolocks #thesoo #stmarysriver #greatlakesshipping
FINALLY catching the Viking Octantis at Rotary Park
มุมมอง 35121 วันที่ผ่านมา
I have been trying to catch one of the Viking ships at Rotary park for years, literally! On this day, all of my patience was rewarded! It was a very windy day but that didn't stop us from heading down to Rotary Park in Sault Ste Marie to see the lovely Viking Octantis go by. I even got to show off how I receive AIS on my phone without using the internet. The link to the Viking Octantis Panomax ...
Does it count as a double if the Saltie Tundra and the Edwin H Gott are 8 hours apart?
มุมมอง 23728 วันที่ผ่านมา
I figured I would combine these two videos, as they were recorded on the same day. On our morning walk, Argo finds us the Saltie Tundra in the Poe Lock. Later in the day, Argo also finds the Edwin H Gott in the Poe lock. The wind, in the evening, was quite severe so I voiceover that portion of the video. Argo and I went down to hike and clear the section of the North Country Trail between Brevort Lake Dam and Brevort Lake Campground. It wasn't super hot but it was a very muggy day on the trail. A Trifecta! Good boy Argo.😊
I hope Argo gets extra treats whenever he finds extra ships ...
Thank you two!
Thank you Cody. Always enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them!
What kind of dog is he is he a boxer was a long tail
You do such a great job on this video an article is really pretty dog
Both of them look like they are loaded. The Barker is really riding low. I can’t see her anchor openings. Nice catch. Great video of them both. 😊 well now further down I do see her anchor openings lol
They were both loaded, interesting how much lower the JRB sits though.
@@codyandargo906 yes I don’t know if I have ever seen her that low.
Holy. Never thought I’d meet someone on here from the Soo!
The Soo is a happening place!
He is so cute!!! Squirrels aka tree rats!
They torment him so much!
Wow! Can you imagine pulling the James R. Barker into place, right behind but not touching the American Century? Some good navigation skills, there.
I can't imagine, not even a little bit :)
Very nice shot of 2 very nice ships!
Famous! People will be taking videos of you two! I've mentioned before that when the Barker and Mesabi Miner were mothballed over by the Drummond Island dolomite docks that my dad and I had cruised in the fishing-boat the whole length of the Barker from about 10 feet away. That wall of steel went on forever.
lol, we have been recognized three times now... weird! :) The closest I've been was at Engineers day, when I was between the locks, and the American Century(I think? Maybe Indiana Harbor) pulled in. Once they were up at Lake Superior level I could not believe how tall they were!
Love this
Aren't they wonderful!!! Thank you for sharing this video.
That boat looks like it was designed by a government committee. The floating condo.
Or by engineers who never communicate between departments.
September in the Soo. The Leitch was brand new (just a year or 2 old,) when I lived in the Soo. Depending on the wind direction, the days quickly jump back and forth between hot and cold, tending ever colder. It must be nice having a house to put up antennas at. I'm in a first floor apt on an alley, and 20 feet from heavy power-lines. Fortunately there's a park 2 blocks away, and a 30 minute drive takes me up to 9,100 feet on the side of the mountain.
This autumn has been abnormally warm, which is making all of the locals nervous that we will pay for it in January. The downside of the warm weather is it has pushed the fall colors back quite a bit, almost three weeks later than normal now. I don't have a very big lot but I am trying to make the best of it, lol. I have an antenna for the AIS station, antenna for the Broadcastify feed, another antenna for marine traffic to receive satellite NAV info. 11' vhf/uhf vertical and now a 40-6 Off center fed dipole. Technically, I do still have my 40m EFHW up but not using it and will likely pull it down before winter hits.
They call her "The little bank building that floats!"
Very fitting!
I have seen somewhere where the mid section of the ship was expanded. Port and starboard in the cargo bay to raise the capacity of the ship, which made it too wide for the smaller lock.
I keep missing out on seeing the victory/maumee in Marquette. Have seen the Pearson though.
3:38 Great salute from Burns Harbor!
She is such a pretty ship.
Beautiful day in the Soo. Very nice video. Thanks.
Two footers. Good job guys!
We were able to see Octantis in person at dusk when we were staying in Port Huron. Seeing her on camera is one thing; seeing her in person is another 😊 (I took a video & many pictures of her.) She's magnificent!!! 4:11, Argo, your face tells me, "Dad, it's awkward sitting on this rock!" lol
I'm glad you were able to see her in person because the Viking ships really are very striking. To think it really is a floating city, going down the river, just blows my mind! That rock is a bit awkward for him to sit on. I really should talk to the park people about making it more level for him :)
Great footage! Thanks, Argo.😊😂 (oops...) and Cody
lol, thank you!
What a tremendous experience Thanks for sharing Scott on the west coast of Canada 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love that horn!! Beautiful footage. Thank you for your videos.
That is definitely the best horn on the great lakes, that is for sure!
I think it’s the Algoma bear below the lock
Certainly could be. I honestly have on idea.
Enjoyed your rambling. Keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed it
She's a rusty old girl!
You'd get there quicker if you didn't have to keep going ahead and setting up the camera. :)
Ha! Noted :)
So many places to hike in Michigan. All interesting too.
So it's the TUG Victory and the BARGE Maumee. FYI, the Maumee River flows through Indiana and Ohio and empties into Lake Erie at Toledo.
Was up there last Saturday and saw the Federal Ohio downbound at the same time as the Canadian Snowbirds air show! Beautiful day!
I was down near the Aune Osborn campground for the Snowbirds show. It was very cool to see!
i use to camp there when i was little everyone around that lake just calles it the dam had some fun times there as well
It looks like it would be a nice spot to camp. When I was coming back from this hike, there was a pontoon boat pulled up to the site and they were setting up camp. I was a tad jealous :)
Gorgeous ship. There are tours of the ship on line & of course the vloggers recording their voyages. Lots to experience & learn. Definitely not your party ship like most of the cruise lines. And yeah, you're paying for it. 🛳 💲💲💲
I've seen some vlogs from the ship and it really does look like an amazing experience. Maybe if this whole TH-cam thing takes off I can go on a cruise.. but I doubt I could bring Argo so.. hmmm.
Octantis has many meanings...one is a faraway constellation.
I did not know that, thank you!
2 subs, John and Paul. Polaris has George and Ringo. Subs are not allowed to dive in US waters. Diving at Tobermory with crystal clear water and all the wrecks would be spectacular
I didn't know that they couldn't dive in US waters, that is a shame! It would be interesting to dive on many of the wrecks in Superior.
Great view of Miss Bling #1 ✨! The panomax cams on the Viking ships are awesome, watch them when they go to South America and especially Antarctica. You can see icebergs galore! Thanks for posting!
I often forget to check the cameras until they are coming through town. I need to set a reminder to check them out this winter, while they are down in Antarctica.
@@codyandargo906 My mind is always blown at the iceberg pictures Panomax shares from Octantis! I've saved a few screenshots of them.
Love the Gott! Always have enjpyed her, but after she went to the aid of the Michipicoten in distress, totally respect her & her crew, like the Arthur M Anderson. Their integrity is stellar. Interesting facts about her (boom, horsepower). Also about the ballast water on salties. Just love this working knowledge. Thanks for the voice over, you guys must have really had some gusts.
I have to say, the Gott is my favorite footer and that opinion only increased after they went to the aid of the Michipicoten. Really have to admire that!
I think you are reaching a little Cody...but what the heck. Call it what you may.😊
lol.. I am definitely testing the limits of how far it will stretch :)
Sorry. You have to get both ships in one video frame for it to count as a double. :) The red and white flag on the Tundra has a logo in the upper left corner of the white area by the pole, and is the flag of Malta. Malta is a 'flag of convenience' for large freighters from around the world due to tax advantages offered by Malta.
Fantastic scenery man, this hike looks really enjoyable! Love it
It was very nice! I have to admit, most of the hikes in the UP are nice.. and always green! :)
What a great trail we have in our beautiful state of Michigan.
It really is!
When hiking alone be sure to carry an HT as well as your cellphone, and have the local repeaters programmed into it in advance. Finding them when you have a broken ankle or are bleeding is a bit awkward. The drunks figure their beer cans will melt down to a slag that is inconsequential in the fire-pit. They're wrong. I've always cleaned up my campsite or picnic site so it looked much better than when I arrived. I was taught that from the time I was 3 or 4 years old and I'm in my 70's now. Every campsite, always. I think I left just one without cleaning it up better than when I arrived. I left during a downpour. I still feel bad about it. The trees grow dense enough to kill off whatever is beneath them. Note that the lower limbs of the trees are without foliage. I think they also affect the ground pH enough to kill off plants that would steal nutrients and water from their roots. MI was entirely logged off during the 1800s. At the start of American pioneers migration west in the 1800s it was quite depressing because they were always beneath a canopy of trees as far as the Mississippi river, never any sunshine. The lumberjacks and a growing east coast construction boom, furniture manufacturing, and woodstoves took care of that.
I do always carry an HT along with a rollup j pole and a short length of coax. I don't believe I tried it on this hike but on nearly all of my hikes I do pull out the HT to see if I can hit one or more of the repeaters. I also try to check into the nightly nets when I'm out camping. Throughout my hikes I've been able to get into at least one repeater pretty much everywhere between St Ignace and Paradise with my hefty 5 watts :). I was taught the same thing, that people should not be able to tell that you were ever there. I've come across a lot of garbage on my hikes, the weirdest are the dirty diapers. I have been amazed the places I have found dirty diapers! They hauled that crap in(literally) but they can't haul it out... so frustrating! Coming from Oregon where there are pine forests for many many miles(although less every year with the increased wildfires), I forget that most of the east coast was logged out. I'm guessing that means most of the trees we have here today, could be 2nd generation.. or more. Wow, what a thought!
Just remember Cody, if sea gulls fly over the bay, then technically they become bay gulls...lol Thanks for all your hard work...I greatly appreciate it!!!
Bay gulls, ha! I'll have to remember that :)
Perfect day to release this video the oberstar is back tonight. 9/14/24
